Scala G4, worth it?

heres another new one on the market I just found..

Too expensive, but I like the direction away from having the unit on the outside of the helmet..

So I would pair the G4 to the Zumo, and the iphone 3GS to the Zumo as well? How would I stream music to the G4? Will the Zumo sync to my playlist?

Thanks in advance,

iPhone to G4, via Bluetooth, no cables.

Lemme google zumo, forgot what it is, I think a mp3 player.
iPhone = iPod = mp3 player, hold on.

Which Zumo do you have? I have 550 (mono BT). Zumo connectes to cellphone only via handsfree BT protocol. You cannot listen to your iPhone music via Zumo! What you can try to do is:
1. Pair iPhone HF (mono two way protocol) to Zumo.
2. Pair iPhone A2DP directly to G4
3. Pair Zumo handsfree to G4
It may or may NOT work! G4 allows the connections from 2 different devices, but I don't know if iPhone can connect to 2 BT devices (via different protocols) at the same time. WM smartphones (like Omnia II) can do that.

BTW, Zumo has its own MP3 player. If you have Zumo 550 - you need A2DP dongle, if you have Zumo 660 - it has A2DP build-in

Ok it's a garmin gps, cool.
iPhone is all you need, do you have the mapquest free app, it gives turn by turn voice street name directions now.

Pairing is not an issue - having it actually work while riding is another separate issue.
Not all voice dial systems are equal.
True! I have a full face helmet and removed the foam over the mic.
Most of the time I can use the "voice" feature on my iphone 3Gs (ie to play tunes, forward to next song or voice dial someone in my contact list)

yomomma - you don't need a GPS - there's one built into your phone :p
I personally bought the navigon and love it

I have a RAM mount for my phone (this one). It works great except when it's raining lol....I haven't had any problem with vibrations but just to be safe I'll be buying this pelican case and modifying it to my RAM mount :)

My buddy just picked up a Scala G4 Powerset and we've been using it for the past few days.

I have to say, it's incredibly convenient having the capability to communicate while we're out riding. We got separated a bit of a distance on the 401, which did result in comm dropout (I'd guess we were somewhere around 1km apart, maybe a little further) which does actually get a little annoying, but obviously there's nothing that can be done about that.

One thing I will say, is that the automatic volume adjustment can be nice, but tends to set the volume WAY too loud for music. I dislike the fact that volume control appears to be universal -- that is, if you drop your music to 50%, you're also dropping voice down to 50% -- but I do wonder if this may vary depending on the devices the G4 is paired to. (In my case, an iPhone 3GS.) This resulted in me asking a caller to repeat themself a few times, but then having the crap scared out of me when my music blasted into my ears after ending the call.

Does anyone know offhand how water-proof (or water-resistant) the headsets are? I would prefer to just leave the unit on my helmet at all times, as it'd be a hassle having to remove/re-attach it every time it rains, but I'd also like to avoid frying a $300 headset. :P

I have the G3 version and have ridden in the rain and that nasty I got caught in the other day was as wet as it gets and it seems fine.

Keep the plug in tho ( charger ).

Consider combining earbuds for the music and separating the functions.
Better sound, quieter ride and the comm/phone still works.

Mind you I have phone and iPod separate - not sure how it would work with the single unit.

Not sure about the G4, I have the G2 but I would say it is at the least very water-resistant. Had it on during about 3 hours of can't-see-in-front-of-you downpour and they still work fine.

Had the same issue, but then I did the G4 firmware update, and also IOS4 for iPhone landed shortly after, now it's really good.
I'm not selling till G5!!!!

Will the G4 pair to just a iPhone 3GS? I'd use it to play tunes and make/take calls

I have an Iphone 3gs and have had difficulty in getting it to ppair properly with the G4. Possibly i dont have things set properly on the phone so if anyone has had success let me know how it should all be set up.

I can activate and hear my iTunes fine and I can hear myself getting txt and email and hear phonecalls come in... but it wont answer the phonecalls.

We are hit and miss with the pairing between headsets as well. The units are supposed to come factory paired (I got the 2set) and while we turn them on and it says "Rider A connected" we cant talk till one of us hits the Channel A button.

The range on them is great... and when they work for intercom they work great but we have trouble at low speeds or at lights where the vox is harder to trigger with the reduced noise levels.

If I could get it to work with the Phone part of the iPhone I would be happy... I also have the "Motion X" App which is a terrific gps app for the Iphone with voice directions that are even better than what I am used to from Garmin. And I think Garmin is very decent.

I built a power supply for the bike that my iPhone plugs into so no issues with battery life and I may mod it up to provide another USB port so I can top up my G4 on the fly.

Pleased in General with the G4's and just waiting for firmware upgrade or somthing to help get that final link with the Phone. (Or someone else to chip in with the secret to a good connection?)

iphone 3g

Thanks Poser

I'll give it another shot when I get home in september although I was pretty thorough on the manual. Not sure I had the latest update on the phone though at the time so I will give it another go.

Do you have issues at low speed/dB getting the mic to activate?

no issues, just make sure g4 is updated properly, must say updated successfully on pc screen.

i do have to press A, although it says connected anyway.

had the g4 for two weeks. worked fine for three or four days, then the left speaker cut out. fortunate for me i bought the powerset so i tried the second speaker unit with the same receiver unit and it worked fine. switched them and was gonna do warranty on the first. then the second day of using the the second speaker unit the right hand speaker cut out.......

i was like, 'really???' are you serious!!??? so i called cardo, they gave me an RMA number and instructions to send it back.

sent it back about two weeks ago and just got them back yesterday. they sent me two new speaker units  checked the serial number on both versus the original ones i had....

besides the inconvenience the only problem i have is i had to pay for shipping to get the units to them. they pay the shipping back. :boxing:

sorry but i think thats bad business.

Thats a bummer..
hopefully things go well now for you..
I've had mine for almost a month and I really have no problems. Again when you get a chance to an upgrade on them, new firmware is lest buggy

I want to get a set for our trip to NY in a month.
I have been researching both the Q2 and G4.
We really don't care about the bluetooth, or answering our phones while riding.
I like the ability to plug in an ipod or listen to FM radio.
All we need it for is for communication, bike to bike.
The Q2 set can be found for just over 200$ brand new
The G4 can be found for around 340$ for the set.

The ultimate question. Which one to get.

Buy some alcohol, get drunk, next thing you know, a delivery is at your door with a set of G4.

Hey if u can get a set of G4 for that price, what are you waiting for.

You are going to be disappointed in the sound quality and volume if you go with the Q2.... I have both. G4 is almost as good as ear buds, not quite as nice on the bass
