Sat June 9- Ride 507/elephant lake/algonquin

Your user manual usually tells you how many litres are left when the light comes on. Doing some math you can figure out exactly how far you could go. Me... I just put a small gas can in my backpack and go for a ride until it runs dry, then I REALLY know how far I have when the light comes on :)

I'll have to give that a go then sometime and see what the distance actually is then! Thanks Jamie I appreciate the quick response.

No problem. I usually do two tests, one just driving around town trying to hit every red light and stop sign I can, and another test straight highway at 100kph no traffic, the two numbers can vary quite a bit, so it's good to know both.

Yes that's correct. My first was a CBR125 which gave me around 300km per tank. This bike I fill with the nozzle out filled to the very top of the tank. I'll typically let the fuel light flash as I don't know how many kms I have until it runs dry. I wouldn't expect it to have another 120km in the tank at that stage...would it??

Well how much can you put in the tank when your light is flashing? If it's 9 liters, then you still had 4 more to go. About 1-3rd of the tank...
I also read somewhere that the cbr250's fuel gauge can be unpredictable at times.

well , CBR250 only burns 3 liters every 100 km , it means u need only 15 liters gas to do 500km on cbr250 according to their websites. kawi is 2 cylinders (cbr is one cylinder) and burns 4 liters every 100 km ... so u do the math . btw yeah we dont fill the tanks up , while bike is leaning on stand .so usually i would say we have 15 or 16 liters in the 18 liters tank .

mimico i would test the ur cbr250 to see if there is something wrong , there is no way u can do 250 km on a tank on ur bike , unless u are always riding it on top speed ...

Nah definitely not doing top speed all the time! Hell barely ever! LoL I calculate the average economy and I'm around 4.1l/100km...I think 3l/100 is a little bit optimistic but typically EPA figures are not to be trusted.

I put in around 9-10 litres per fill up so I think I'm just being overly conservative on when I need to fill up. Ie: starts flashing and I fill up within 30-40k of that flashing start. I'll get a small gas can and just run it until it goes dry and then see how far I have. Might do a ride tonight just to see what I can get out of it and track a bit better.

Checked last night in the manual...1.4L left in the tank when it starts flashing. So basically that's not a lot of miles left on it but I'll try and get some real numbers and report back.

Update:

Filled up this morning. Fuel gauge started flashing last night so I filled up this morning. The manual states 1.4L SHOULD be left in the tank, however I filled up with 9.947L so it's off by 3.05L (don't know how accurate the pump counter is).

The 9.947L gave me a distance of 271.7km for 3.6L/100km (mixed highway/city commute) which is better than original 4.0-4.2L/km the first couple thousand kms.

With that the 3.05L would give me an additional 85km (approx) for a total of around 360km on a full tank.

Not sure how you're squeezing 430-500km/tank but that's damn good. I do the majority of my riding on my commute to/from work so that may improve on highway, but I haven't done a 100% highway run yet to confirm this.
