Rosey Toes

Did you ever take the time to discuss this rationally with Ted? Sure, you discovered a crack in the frame, what if he never saw it when doing the safety, or maybe it happened after the inspection. Did he refuse to do anything about it, or did you even ask?
This was a 10 year old bike, and picking on Ted in this forum is not going to make you any friends. I'd like to hear his side of the story.

I'm not saying that Ted's not a nice man, just that he sold me a hunk of junk. The bike was brought back to him 3 times during the first 2-3 weeks to fix various problems I was having. Whether the crack was there before I bought the bike I'll never know but I thought by buying a certified bike from a mechanic would not include a cracked frame.

In his defense, he did repair some issues with the bike but it would take me out of commission and I needed the transportation. After a while I just wrote it off as a learning lesson.

You make the guy sound like he was trying to rip you off or something. I highly doubt that, Ted is a really humble guy.

Whether he knew the horrible condition of the bike or not I cannot say. Being a mechanic selling certified bikes that are supposed to be safe and road worthy, he failed on this one. So, yes he did rip me off.

What did you expect from a $1000 bike?

The man buys and sells bikes. He doesn't ride them all to see which are lemons. This is the nature of buying used bikes. Don't blame the man for something that really wasn't his fault.

I didn't expect much but I did expect more than a months worth. Ultimately it's buyer beware but yes I believe it was definitely his fault for selling me a "certified vehicle" when it was just a "certified piece of crap".

Ted (Rosey Toes) has about 50 bikes in his storage garage in various sad states of disrepair. I'm not sure if any are for sale, but if you picked one to buy I'm guessing he would charge you anywhere from $100 (non-certified) to $2,000 (certified). If you pay for junk you get junk.

The fact that he even sent a tow truck to help out is proof he was being generous as his commitment to you ran out once you left the lot. Any dealer will tell you that, or charge you for the tow.

He doesn't have the most glamorous shop but he is fair.

Everyone's entitled to their own review of their service at anyshop. I know alot of you would chop their balls off for Ted, but the OP's entitled to his review.

As humble as Ted might be, everyone has flaws. Unfortunately, I don't appreciate that trait when it comes to working on bikes, especially mine, so that's one shop, and shop owner I no longer recommend, given my one experience with him.

As much as it sounds a little sketchy he was probably trying to help you out by certifying the bike even though he shouldn't have. Pretty hard to find a certified bike for $1k I would think.

My experience with Ted is the same as yours inyaknow. He certified a bike I bought that should not have been certified. When I confronted him on it, he told me "It's not like I inspect everything on the bike".

When I lived in TO I would go anyplace but his to get my bike repaired. If he was the only mechanic in town to fix a motorcycle, I would sell it and ride a mountain bike.

l also have a maxim 400,a 83 and if it wont for ted my bike would be put down long ago he,s don a great job keeping it going thanks ted great job !

Little off topic, but anyone have a recent price on tire replacement if I bring in the bike and new tires?

Thanks

This is correct and the same as a car. Certified does not necessarily mean the bike has to run. Or so my mechanic has told me.

You mean your 16 year old, thousand dollar bike was unreliable? Whodathunkit??!?

OK, I keep hearing ppl praising Ted from Rosey Toes. Here's my experience...

Back in 2001 I bought a 1985 Maxim 400 from Ted. I was broke and needed to get on the road, It was $1000.00. Definetly cheap and can't expect much from the machine.

The transaction went like this:

-Gave $1K cash and rode the "certified" bike away with friends plate.
-Turned right on Wilson Ave (less than 1 km from shop) and the bike gave out, pulled into driveway.
-Luckly my friend was with me in a car as I tried to restart the bike.
-Starter broken, no problem cause there's a kick-start.
-Put side-stand down and try to start bike...
-9 attempts later, side-stand cracks and I find myself on the ground.
-Call Ted and tell him about the problems, he sends his tow truck out to get bike.
-My friend drives me home, angry cause I couldn't ride bike home but at least he's taking care of the problem.
-6 days later my bike is ready to ride.
-Pick bike up and ride it for another 5 days before the starter craps out on me again.
-Don't want to bother getting it fixed so kick-start the bike for another 1 month.
-During this time bike is burning oil like mad and the exhaust creates a hole and makes the bike loud as hell, I deal with it.
-Bring bike in to get a oil change and the mechanic points out a major crack in the frame (which I can visually see and thank you know who that it never gave out on me)
-1 week after this I'm trying to send the bike to the scrapers and get $100 for the metal.
-For some reason nobody wants to touch the bike (called 7 different scrapers) and I have to spend $50 for someone to take it off my hands.

From this point on I've never gone back and never will go back to Rosey Toes or like I like to call him CHEESY TOES.

Great place if you want a bike "certified" fast and cheap but will never trust his work or his word.

IMHO.

Bud, you bought a 16 year old bike certified and cheap. If you got 3 steady weeks out of it, it was a deal

Why didn't you go back to Ted after it crapped out again? You put yourself through your own grief, sorry to say. If that was me I would have brought the bike back, gotten it fixed, then if it happened again I'd ask to swap the bike for one that's less of a lemon. What did you expect from a $1000 bike?

The man buys and sells bikes. He doesn't ride them all to see which are lemons. This is the nature of buying used bikes. Don't blame the man for something that really wasn't his fault.

I agree.. Ted is more than reasonable, if there was something seriously wrong (crack in the frame), I'm sure he would have delt with it.

sorry for your experience, but overall Ted is a good guy to deal with

Would you guys take brand new bikes to get serviced at Rosey Toes? Or is it only safe to service older, less expensive models (Like my ninja 250) to this bike shop? I, and I'm sure others here also, want the best service on my bike without having something fall off after taking it home.
