RIM Playbook. Limited sale... $200

I happened to drive by the local Staples this morning, and saw about 6 ppl lined up. I didn't have the heart to tell them that if they bothered checking the online Staples store, they would have seen that the store was sold out. I decided to leave them standing there shivering in the cold to find out an hour later from the store employee when they opened.

I'm hoping to snag one on the next shipment for this bargain price. It will pair nicely with my BB. It's small, light and portable which is what I would like it for. And for what I use a tablet for mainly email and browsing (I couldn't care less about useless apps), this thing will work perfect!

Thanks RIM.

If you're thinking about this deal......

"Sale" ends November 24th.

Needless to say, virtually every store was sold out within the first hour or so on the day of the sale.

Good news : Staples (and Im sure many other vendors), are taking preorders and are guaranteeing shipment. The next batch are due to arrive on the 29th.

On behalf of my wife - who is a Senior Project Manager of Manufacturing at RIM Waterloo - we thank you for your support. Every BB and Playbook sold gets me one step closer to living carefree at home in the manner to which I will become accustomed. :D

ya know what....Screw RIM.

so i have a BB and i just bought a Playbook....setting them up i get a notice that my BB has an update...so i download the update and install it. So then i try to bridge the BB and Playbook and for that i need to go online for some god awful reason...No problemo i have WiFi. Click on the blackberry world app "Data plan is not an option" or something along those lines....so i google it and MOTHER****ING RIM has agreed to limit capabilities of the Blackberrys over the WiFi to force more people to get data, and to use up more data bandwidth...

I have Data, and its a corporate account and i dont really care what my usage is. The problem is that my area has really ****** reception and i have no 3G/Edge or even regular signal in my basement (where i like to spend my time).

So for me to Bridge these two devices right now, i have to go outside like a moron and try to get a solid 3G signal when i have perfectly good WiFi at home...

i hope they do sink...that and their haphazard BB menu and navigation...Nothing is intuitive, NOTHING!!

Plenty of brand-new still-in-the-box Playbooks have just been listed on eBay. So, they are available if you're willing to pay the scalpers.

You know what happens in cases like this?

Some people willing to milk the system for profit, will go around to those who don't plan to participate and buy the "extra" quotas of 5.

Some employees will stockpile 500 or more of the things at home, ready to sell for Christmas.

Is that really fair to anyone in the general public who wants to buy one, or the company itself?

Oh boy, I hope you're not counting on your wife's job at RIM to carry you to retirement! I predict she'll be looking for work within 12-18 months... :(

Bingo... I would have bought 3 myself (dad, sister, and myself) but they were sold out because people are trying to "scalp" these things. BestBuy offers free shipping over $20. They have some in stock (online) but are no longer taking online orders. FutureShop (BestBuy's sister company) wants $40 for shipping (I don't get it? Just another cash grab?) Looks like everyone is trying to profit from the sale of these things.

If I can find one for $200, great! But if not, I'm just another ******-off potential customer that'll likely take my business elsewhere.

Listen..... I just did this today (and the staff told me A LOT of people did this since yesterday), and you can too.

Step 1: Go to Staples
Step 2: Tell them you want a Playbook
Step 3: Pay the total, and they will enter you into their database with your name and phone number and give you a receipt, and a slip with your Playbook order.
Step 4: They will call you when it arrives.

It can't be any simpler. There aren't a limited number of Playbooks, the factory will keep pumping them if people keep buying them.

the PB is working fine...that is not my problem...just the fact that now certain apps MUST use Data instead of WiFi to access...simply because some providers asked RIM to do this...

This is how i use my Iphone, no data, just WiFi at home, if Apple did this i'd chuck the iphone in the garbage....Apple limits their devices a lot, but even they arent that stupid to piss off that many people.

Nothing much you can do about that but this is the one area we can expect great improvement before the year and Christmas buying season is out.

ya selling playbooks at a loss will do that ?!?!?!

you really think it cost the company $200 to make and ship the product with plastic parts and slave labour?

Besides, the real money is in the ongoing service plans. If discounting Playbooks leads to greater adoption by individuals and business, that in turn leads to greater potential for user lock-in, market penetration, which in turn pays off in potential for more income from data plans, more app writers supporting the Playbook, more brand recognition leading to more sales.

Playbook apps or apps for your BB? Anyway, this is precisely why i refuse to update my BB software LOL.
