Hello Folks,
I am wondering what the preference of the members are as far as Rifle Ranges in the GTA vicinity are concerned. I would prefer at least a 250m range if at all possible.
Could you please post:
1. The Range and location
2. Your experience with them
3. The types of ranges (indoor/outdoor, pistol only etc)
4. Disadvantages (service specific - must buy ammo at range etc, no hand loads, weapons limitations)
5. Notable advantages/benefits (free wifi or something?)
6. Other considerations or advice

MAny thanks to all for your time!

IIRC Sonny the bull is associated with a gun club northeast of the city, toysareforboys has a lot of prior experience with one west of the gta. Try pm'ing them for more info (TAFB seems to have disappeared lately, so he may not reply).

there is one in Burlington on king rd, never been but if you can find a number i am sure you could call for more info.

"burlington ontario gun range" type that into google and its the first place that comes up, they have a forum.

I have been a member of 5 clubs over the last several years, most of the big name ones you will hear about, I was a member, and left for various reasons.

From my experience, the BEST gun club I have been part of is easily and by far Silverdales Gun Club. They have a good variety of distances to shoot from. Their prices are FAIR.. (that is a hard thing to come by).. And the people are just normal friendly Canadians.. They also hold several events throughout the year (i believe there is a turkey hunt coming up)

check out their site... maybe I'll see you there some time, a day pass is only $20...

http://www.silverdalegunclub.com/

I usually only bring out the big guns when I go to this range.. 556 308 50AE... they wont let you play with the bigger toys at some of the ranges...

Another thumbs up for Silverdale here.

Burlington is indoor 50 yard only, so don't bother. Silverdale is super laid back and you can do all kinds of shooting from action pistol to trap and everything between. There's a well-stocked shop on-site as well.

targetsportscanada.com

Had an amazing time there. Look it up, it's just off Stoufville Rd off the the 404 (DVP) Not sure it is the kind of place your looking for. I took my girfriend there for Valentine's Day lol. It was awesome!

D

Target Sports is also indoors only... and overly expensive, IMO. At least when I went there some years back.

Curious about pricing.... The range I go to is $25 for the first rental (long or short) $20 for the second rental, and then cost of ammo that must be purchased from the range.

How does that compare with target sports?

:laughing8: @ renting guns...

I suppose its a good way for noobs to see what its like.

Isn't their a saying about never leaving your fingerprints on a gun that was just fired... :D

I don't rent guns so I wouldn't know. But I seem to remember Target Sports charging something like 35 or 40 bucks for the rental, and then 50 cents a round for 9mm and almost a buck for .45 which is just crazy.

9mm normally costs $15/50rnds and .45 is still under $25/50rnds. Their rental rate for .223 ammo is 2 friggin dollars per bullet when the normal price is around 50 cents. Not sure how they justify this... besides maybe just wanting to discourage people from shooting too much ammo through their rental guns, which I suppose is reasonable.

How do I go about getting my pal a gun shooter license?

What is this muzzle you people speak of?

9mm = best ammo ever.

Am I doing it right?

lots of ranges offer pal training, you pass the tests then apply for a license from the RCMP. there are three types of licenses, but you could only have restricted (handguns mainly) and non restricted which is shotguns rifles mainly. two different tests which can eb done at same time.

9mm?? - try shooting a variety of calibers and see what you like. there are many, 9mm is just popular as its a good all rounder, cheaper then a .45 and bigger then smaller rounds like a .22.

silverdale is pretty much your only option if you want long distance i believe. theres lots of other ranges but they all vary in what they have.

Hello Folks,
I am wondering what the preference of the members are as far as Rifle Ranges in the GTA vicinity are concerned. I would prefer at least a 250m range if at all possible.
Could you please post:

1. The Range and location

Sharon Gun Club - Harold Rd. & Kennedy Road east of the 404 and Green Lane.

2. Your experience with them

I've been a member for about 4 years now. You have to buy a share in the club which runs around $1,000. Club dues are around $400 per year +/-. It's a relaxed, easy going atmosphere where you can enjoy a day of shooting without someone up your butt every few minutes. The people and helpful and friendly. Every Saturday morning, a guy cooks breakfast in the club house. There have been a lot of improvements over the time I've been a member. I really enjoy the club.

3. The types of ranges (indoor/outdoor, pistol only etc)

Lets see......range 1 is pistol (black badge only - IPSC & IDPA), range 2 is pistol, range 3 is a 100 yard rifle range, range 4 is a 200-300 yard rifle range, range 5 is dedicated .22lr only and range six is the practical rifle and practical shotgun range - black badge only - police use it during the week. There's also a cowboy action range, trap range and an archery range.

4. Disadvantages (service specific - must buy ammo at range etc, no hand loads, weapons limitations)

Some people scoff at the the cost and having to buy a share of the club. Some complain about the work parties as well - but hey, it helps reduce the operating costs and keeps membership costs down. Experienced shooters don't like the mandatory probation, qualifications and observation periods. ie you need to qualify to use handguns, range 4 (iron sights or scope only) or range 6 for practical rifle or shotgun - similar to IPSC or IDPA, but your using long-guns instead of holstered pistols.

5. Notable advantages/benefits (free wifi or something?)

No wifi, but it's a pretty solid club. It's structured well for the new shooter and offers sufficient training and mandatory qualifications, probation and observations to ensure the new shooters are both proficient and safe.

6. Other considerations or advice

Clean up your mess when you're done - LOL!

Word on the street is Silverdale - it's the most economical. If you want to get into some serious long distance shooting, you can join ORA and use the 1,000 m range at base Borden.

www.canadiangunnutz.com offers a wealth of information about anything to do with target shooting, collecting, hunting, ammuntion and firearms.

BTW, Target Sports doesn't rent guns. You pay for the time and instruction only. The use of the guns is part of the package. Ammo is expensive - the .223 and .308 is special frangible ammo which disintegrates to dust when it impacts the metal backstop. The regular ball ammo would damage the backstop now that the clam shell is gone.

250+ meter rifle range? you got limited options.

1- ORA Ontario rifle association- Base Borden 1000yards or meters cant remember.
2- Milcun- Haliburton 1000meters (Milatary/Police) + Well established shooters.
2- Twin cities rifle club- Kitchener/Waterloo- 300meters
3- Sharon Gun Club- Sharon- 300meters
4- Oshawa skeet and gun club- 300meters

I am not sure how long you have been shooting, but have a look at the CSSA or the NFA and help to protect our rights to own firearms.

what's wrong with renting guns? I don't want the hassle of owning, storing, and transporting a restricted firearm. I don't want to pay a membership fee. I like to shoot many different kinds - revolvers, pistols, small caliber, big caliber.

You can rent long guns ranging from .223, all the way to .308. I don't have to own to fire the big boys.

silverdale. hands down.

sharon has i 300 or 400 yard range, iirc, but only one or two firing positions on it. you also have to buy a $1000 share of the club to become a member.
