Riding in shorts yes or no???

It still gets me that people ride without gloves. First thing to hit the ground, must suck having to have someone else wipe your arse for a month.
When I were a lad my brother an I were goofing around in a parking lot with some buddies, car surfing and the like. Bro slid off the hood of a car moving maybe 10km/h. We drove to the ER and I got to spend 4 hours watching a nurse pull gravel out of his hands. Gloves. (y)

This thread also made me recall my buddy Joey and his habit of wearing shorts while riding dirt bikes in the hot sun. He just ignored all of the little scrapes and bruises from grass and twigs, but what he couldn't ignore was the 2nd degree burn to his right leg the day he laid the bike down on the trail and his inner thigh got up close and personal with the exhaust. Man, the noises he made...

Something about a song and a sausage creature.

I see people every day in shorts and t-shirt
I would love to challenge them to just lay down on the 401 in 30 degree temperatures
Then ask him to imagine, he has just slid 100 yards on his back and can't move because of broken bones.

Hard no for me.

Coming home from Richmond Hill yesterday taking King Road all the way to Milton, saw an old geezer (thinking in his 60s ) on a cruiser going the opposite direction with shorts, running shoes and shirtless...nothing on to protect his upper body...no gloves, nothing, except for the gray hairs covering his chest...maybe they are kevlar reinforced...lol...at least he had a helmet...SMH

Cruisers have a very low accident rate....they aren't pushing the envelope at every corner as too many of us do. Not excusing the old geezer but he's not as much at risk as a new rider without street smarts who hasn't learned about white lines in the rain.

I'm still debating knee pads for my eBike which gets to 25 kph shockingly quick without the stability of the CB300. I won't even do shorts on it....tropical sun is just brutal.
Bike helmet, riding shirt, long pants and oddly my shorty Alpinstars boots are the best for the eBike....gloves of course but could use a lighter pair.

Disagree about cruiser accident rate. They arent pushing the limit but many arent on top of their game, arent paying enough attention and are unwieldy and hard to save if things go wrong. The old guy that's ridden his whole life is a far different risk profile to the 50 yo dentist/RE agent that bought an 800 lb bike as their first to cruise on.

Insurance stats say otherwise. That was a study of claims data on 2 million mcycles.
Least Likely to be Crashed** * 1. Yamaha Virago Series * 2. Honda Rebel Series * 3. Suzuki Savage * 4. Harley-Davidson FXR * 5. BMW R1200C
Most Likely to be Crashed * 1. Suzuki GSX-R Series * 2. Kawasaki Ninja Series * 3. Suzuki TLR * 4. Yamaha YZF Series * 5. Honda CBR Series
The 50 year old that hasn't ridden for decades is crazy dangerous to himself on a modern sport bike with power he has never experienced.

Damn, no wonder TLRs are rare as rockinghorse **** in Canada. Maybe the rotary dampers don't like the cold .

maybe something a little less intimidating ...but the 50 year has the money for what he wanted as a 20 year old and has the insurance history. Just doesn't have the reflexes or mcycle street smarts but he thinks he does.

After six years of riding I finally fall off my bike this weekend. The only piece of gear I didn’t have on, was my riding pants. My knee is now missing a bunch of skin, and I’m very thankful I had the rest of the gear on. Mesh jacket is completely destroyed, but did it’s job, gloves 100% saved my hands, and the Daytona boots I’m sure saved me from a crush injury.
I can’t imagine how much pain I would be in without what I was wearing

Glad you're okay ...i used to ride jeans and motocross knee armour underneath. Saved my knee on a off road come off.Screen Shot 2022-07-25 at Jul, 25 2022 10.55.25 PM.jpg
Wearing HWK riding pants now as I'm reasonably confident their knee armour will stay in place tho the motocross armour was better.
...

I wear shorts and a tee shirt on a specific route I take along Lake Dr in Keswick. Speed limit is 30kph to destination and back. It is also the only route I take with my dog as a passenger. Its a little quicker then the bicyclists that take the route as well.

I usually ride with shorts and flipflops if I'm going to the beach which is like 5 mins back and wheelies kept to <=2 (safety first).

I'm 100% ATGATT when riding. Gear definitely saved me from worse damage when I was hit. If it's too hot out, then my car is nicely air conditioned.

have i done it? yes. but literally down the street to pick up some burritos or something.

other than that, at a minimum i have regular jeans on (although its questionable whether that even makes a difference vs shorts. i guess the optics just looks better but thats probably it).
