Registration leads to confiscation.

I remember during the great gun registry debate that many people could not understand why gun owners hated the registry. Last night a ruling was made that shows exactly why.

I haven't read the history of this case, so correct me if I am wrong, but I have been lead to believe that essentially two gun stores got in a fight as each wanted to be exclusive dealers for Swiss Arms firearms. One of the stores contacted the RCMP claiming that the model(s) the other store imported should be prohibited.

Last night at 22:00 the RCMP decided that all Swiss Arms are now prohibited. Restricted and non-restricted alike. That means that what they can find will be confiscated without compensation. Some collectors have $40k worth of Swiss Arms. A single rifle is typically $3500 to $4000.

This is a large scale theft from legal and law-abiding citizens. There have been no cases of an owner of one of these rifles converting it to burst or full auto, and no one has commissioned one in a crime. People that are spending $4k on a rifle are not the people you need to worry about; the RCMP is targeting the wrong people here.

And that is why I am absolutely against any registration of firearms -- because that registration is used to steal property from legitimate owners.

Canadian gun laws are so stupid its pointless to even discuss.

Its pointless bureaucracy with logic that even a 12 year old could tear apart.

PS **** you RCMP!

We are talking millions of dollars of private property that now they want to take away...should come out of the salaries of the idiots who make these rules imo

Are there any 'official' links to this? (other than a bunch of frothing gunnutz posts)

I would link to the notification on the NFA website, but I can't access the site.

I don't think any news articles have been written for today's papers as this happened late last night.

I saw the notice on their site & facebook, but there's nothing else anywhere and certainly with the online world any other articles would be showing up, no?

I think the info will start appearing soon, in the meantime here is an image of the FRT classification: https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1/577378_10153870108900434_901520849_n.jpg

And a thread regarding the class action law suit being launched: http://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/1z3lx6/swiss_arms_class_action_lawsuit_ed_burlew/

I am sure Solomon Friedman will have an article published in another day or two.

funny how every local/regional PS made a point of storing the firearm registry data in their "inhouse" database for future reference

Do you mean to tell me that the people in charge of upholding the law actually broke the law by not destroying the records?
That couldn't be..

end sarcasm/

The data from the old registry is exactly that; old data. There's no doubt in my mind that they'll use it to possibly contact owners who haven't stepped up, but they can't do much more with it if the person says they sold the gun. I'm sure they'll use scare tactics, but in the end, unless they have very strong grounds to believe you're lying, they can eat a big one.

I'm certainly glad now that I never bought a Swiss Arms, and I came very close recently... but I'd think long and hard about handing it over. Ultimately, those who choose to hand them over, should strip the gun completely and send just the bare receiver to a DAELER, not to the police.

Most who don't care about guns won't realize that this is proof that our gubment a don't care about personal property rights (come to think of it, I think we can thank Turdo senior for this...).

Said same group will be appalled when the gubment comes for some of their own personal property and will be flabbergasted that it could happen to them.

Well don't say you weren't warned.

No one cares until it affects them

That story makes numerous references to the owners being compensated for their confiscated firearms

I don't think all of the details are available yet. I haven't found a notice on the RCMP website and it is too soon for any owners of these rifles to have received letters yet.

Even if they offer compensation though... while better than nothing, the RCMP approved the importation and sale of these rifles, people bought them, and now they'll take them back? For what reason exactly? Is there something broken in their process? I think there are a lot of answers needed.
