Red Light ticket ouch!

Hey gang, yup I got tagged for running a red.

Was on the bike too, when I got home from going to Algonquin. Just a bit tired and lazy and missed it.
Was close to home as well. Didn't even realize they had a camera system at this intersection.

Anyhow I need to deal with this pretty soon as I'm not sure when I got it in the mail and it appears I need to act within 15 days.
What have you all done, just pay move on, there are some options there. Can I delay payment.

BTW the fine is $325! I haven't had a ticket for anything in years, parking, speeding or otherwise.
I may get one too. Last week in the rain it was either: get hit by a car that wanted to change lane to turn right close to the stop line from beside me, or brake and slip or escape and risk running the light. I opted for the third one.

The way I see it now, the first two options would have cost me more than $325.

Nope read it again just now, no indication of speed.
I know right, yet, I'm sure it's all there ready to go when they flip the switch.
They can easily do this with the 407 as well.
Entry time, exit time, average speed, boom ticket in the mailbox.

Not sure about north america but I know parts of Europe have this

this sounds odd. there's no specified length of time needed to stop in the HTA, only a complete stop is needed.

regarding sensors in the road: Im a GIS technician for a municipality. I'm currently capturing and digitizing data for the infrastructure in intersections, some of which have red light cameras. I've never seen sensors for red light cameras. It's very possible they exist, but I've never seen them indicated on any as-built drawing.
I've got this weird habit of stopping for stop signs but it scares me when someone's hugging my back bumper.

The thought of stop sign cameras comes to mind but I envision a whole new technology for the sensors, and a lot of P'd off drivers. A humane system would accept almost a stop but not the Slight Tap Of Pedal guys. A three second wait while stopped would make a big change in the status quo. Fewer collisions but more shootings.

Talk to downtown drivers and they actually rage if you stop at a stop sign as it ruins the flow of traffic.

Early on, 407 bills had entry time, exit time and distance. They didn't calculate the average speed but it was trivial if you wanted to. I learned that one on an end to end trip with my parents transponder. Before 172 days but the average speed was right in that ballpark. It was late, there was no traffic and I had a long way to go. Diesel car so fuel mileage wasn't even that bad.

The sensors that I am referring to are the lines that are cut into the asphalt and caulked with tar (that we all hate) just before the big white line.

These detect if a car is standing there on the red light so the lights can change and also if you came to a complete stop in case of a red light camera.

Here is a picture of the exact intersection this happened on.

Another one with cuts and tar in brand new asphalt.

Yes I'm well aware of those sensors. I capture them in my job. I'm just saying I've never seen them lead back to a red light camera but then again the red light cameras arent even owned by my municipality. they're owned by a third party.

If the cameras are tied into permanent sensors (which I still doubt), I suspect they would run a wire from the control cabinet to the camera location (or wireless as it's not safety critical???).

that makes sense but i cant confirm it. when this project started, i asked the PM about red light cameras and I was told to not worry about capturing that data because we don't own the cameras.

Well I the ticket states a court location in Scarborough (Markham and Milner), but I'm in daHood and so was the intersection. 🤷‍♂️
There should be 2 photos in the red light ticket of your bike. Where was the exact locations of the bike in the interaction?

Well there are 3 photos. 1 of the intersection when the light turns red. 2 of vehicle in the intersection (light still red), 3rd close up of plate.
I can neither confirm or deny where the bike was in the photos... ;) but they got me!

Would the camera have captured your plate if it was tucked underneath slightly? I assume yours is in the stock location for the bike.

tucking adv plates is not always an easy solution

A lot of ADV have the rear light and trim signals coming off the license plate holder.

So tucking it away would make it pretty much obstructed. Possibly asking for more attention than the trouble is worth.

About photo 1 why/how does the camera take a photo before you enter the intersection with the redlight.
It doesn't make sense for the camera take photos of every car just in case it runs the redlight
Or is there some sort of speed sensor and it know your not gonna stop?
Sorry for all the questions but I am little confused
Because I also got a red light ticket but on right hand turn.
My Photo #1 is of my car before the crosswalk with the brake lights on and the redlight
My photo#2 is a photo without my car because I already turned right.

Also about 2 months ago at the same intersection. A car at full stop on a redlight in the middle lane decided to turn right. Crossing over the right lane. Pop pop the red light camera went off!

many bikes do in general, but ADV typically have an extended fender and i imagine the aftermarket tail tidy offerings are slim pickings.

Yea. Slim pickings.

Also
To most ADV guys, hiding their plates is not on their priority

Guys on a SuperDuke. Might be a different story.

No worries, good questions so we all can understand how it works and avoid making my mistake.
I have a feeling they have a sensor on one side of the intersection, camera on the other. Photography happens pretty quick so a couple of shots can happen in an instant, even with 1 flash of light.
Other then my guess I don't really know how it works, they must have a sensor which kinda knows your are not slowing down or something and tracks you, other then taking shots of all vehicles.
Also someone does seem to look at it. It was signed off by an officer. So I guess if it was multiple vehicles they could filter this out.
