I just suffered through 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In high school my English teacher arranged an afternoon field trip for the class to attend this movie at a local theater. We then had to do an essay on it.

I suffered through it, hated the movie, boring, long, drawn out plot. I really enjoyed the half day away from classes though.

I believe it's a movie you can't fully appreciate on a first viewing. I certainly had a similar reaction. It's definitely a slow slog, compared to more modern movies, and has some artsy flare some might not appreciate. But if you view it more in the context of when it was made it might make more sense. Trying to demonstrate a realistic view of space travel, considering landing on the moon didn't happen until a year after the movie was released. Somewhat forward thinking when they were blasting tin cans into outer space. Also surprisingly relevant the rise of Ai and how perverse and different the logic would be from humans or humanity. Add on the sci fi elements about Jupiter, was thought provoking. The last half builds up nicely for me.

Yeah fast forward to today, and all those concepts seem pretty well played out and overly familiar, and the level of visual details in movies is outstanding. Plus we all have super computers in our pockets which can take some cool photos. So the movie seems over simple by todays standards, but that is almost 60 years of evolution right there.
"2010: The Year We Make Contact" is a more conventional movie, in the action sense.

I just suffered through 2001: A Space Odyssey. Why is this movie so revered? Is it just because it was ahead of it's time as far as special effects are concerned? The plot was crap, the acting was crap, the script was crap, and there was so much wasted time it could have been done is 35 min but instead was dragged out for over 2 hours. If you value your time, don't waste it on this. It seems this movie was the trailblazer for producers to rely on special effects to sell tickets rather than substance.
Saw it maybe 10-12 times.
You just aren't old enough.
It came out in the height of the psychedelic period.
Best light show by far at the cinema!

I was a space nut when I was a kid (Had a model of the LEM on my bookshelf beside all the space + sci-fi books). Got my parents to take me to see 2001 at the theatre when it came out. Looking back I can now appreciate the sacrifice they made for me (I liked and still like the movie, but I may be biased - see: forum wordplay'd handle). They must have been half bored half bewildered.

Watched The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It's very loosely based on Operation Postmaster and Henry Cavil's character is loosely based on Gus March-Phillipps, who Ian Fleming loosely based James Bond on (lots of loosely all around). Alan Ritchson's (Reacher) character is both funny and brutal. It's entertaining. I would watch it again in the future.

ASO is one of those flicks that are a must see if you are very high and a only a occasional marijuana consumer the combination will deliver otherwise meh.

Just finished it, thanks for the recommendation. Just what I needed after the last few months of, well crap.

Alita 2 is in the works.
Seems about the right time in history to haul this one out...
Corps rule the world and population kept amused with violent games ...
Rewatched it a couple of months back after watching the remake, and being seriously disappointed.

I am trying to find redeeming virtue. I do like disaster flicks and it is number 3 in Australia but ... 🍿
sometimes you just HAVE to watch a bad movie to appreciate the good ones....
or not - moving on...

looking forward to this...tough shoes to fill

It does, was quite surprised. Hopefully Gunn turns down the cheese and improves the script, because the last couple of Guardians movies were kinda duds after the first one.
