Ram 1500 Eco Diesel Review

That new Colorado, is it slated to come diesel as promised?

Corvette ... Awesome. NSX ... Awesome but don't even think about the price tag. If I had $70 grand to spend on a car (fail) and had a surplus of garage space (fail), it would be the Alfa 4C. It's stunning.
So many amazing cars available these days if you're willing to go over $50G. 4C, ZL-1, i3... Too bad such sums can't be justified other than to soothe one's ego.

While I agree with you I also find that sad. Personally if money meant nothing there's a long list of cars/bikes I would buy simply because I think they're art on wheels. The fact that the majority of them are owned by hipster ********** for an ego boost just says something about people today.

1500 Eco Diesel, Crew Cab, SLT, 3.92 rear end,4x4. I have about 2500Km on it. On my second tank at 85 Km per hour I saw 8.8L-100K in four wheel drive. I average around town about 11-12L-100k. If I drive with a heavy foot I can see 14. If you step on it it will throw you in the back seat[which is fun]. I have not had a truck with this much torque. I'm having trouble adjusting to the gear selector on the dash. Lots of interior storage. Drives like a sports car with the new RAM suspension.8 Speed tranny shifts real smooth. Seems to get it's best mileage on the 401 at about 15-1600RPM which is about 103 KPH on the highway I was down to 9.8L per 100 and it was dropping.
I bought the air bag package for towing and it is nice to be able to adjust your ride height and have the aero adjusting package for highway.
Using the premium diesel I have not seen a fill up more then $94. I'm seeing about 900K per tank right now and this tank should see me hit the 1000+ with my current driving style.
I have not towed with it yet. Starts well in the cold. I plug it in when it gets to -10C.
Negatives,, the heater takes a while to push heat out but that apparently is a diesel thing. The windshield wipers suck.
So far I love it and the gas saving's over the Triton is making the payment.
I looked at every 1500 to 2500's in gas and diesel,, the Eco diesel gave me the best of both worlds. The torque is greater then the 5.7 Hemi. Gas mileage is the best of any truck that could tow a big trailer when not towing. I could care less about the 1/4 mile 60 foot time or trap speed. I wanted to tow and get gas mileage when not towing.
I tow 15-20 times a year the Eco Diesel seemed to fit my needs. So far so good!
I have a friend that towed a 10,000 pound trailer last summer and had no issues with his and loved it.

Nah, that cant be right, our resident "expert" says diesels are slow and anemic off the line.

I saw no mention of said new truck having balls hanging from the back of it. That will disappoint him too :(

Very strange... the Ram 1500 photo gallery only shows the tailgate in two pics and it is a trim package that does not include the big chrome penis lettering.

Someone must have forgotten to tell the website guys about the update. I bet if we come back in a few weeks all the pics will be of the tailgate with the big chrome penis lettering.

I don't get this,, with the traction control engaged it's pulls like a bear on snow. For a "truck" I have to say it really was the nicest ride compared to all the 1500's. It
seemed to perform better then all the 1500's and it gave the best of both mileage and towing. If I plan on doing some drag racing with my trailer attached I guess I'll have to move south. Could probably pick up a figure 8 race as well.
I had no attachment to any truck when I went shopping. Ford or GM could not touch the RAM for performance in a 1500. And that was me test driving.
The diesel has some negatives but ,,running thru snow in 4 wheel drive high watching the gas mileage hit 8.8 liters per hundred was pretty darn impressive. If I drove farther I'm curious to see how much better it would get! I'm just at 12L per 100K now for 2500K,,city and hwy.
At 80 KPH I pulled out to pass a semi north of Port Perry,,, I was shocked at the acceleration. IT beat the Chevy and Ford out with me on performance, function and looks. But what ever floats your boat!

the ridiculous RAM lettering on the tailgate is reserved for the top line model (Laramie?), and hope and pray the sensible ones on chrysler team don't make the sad mistake of putting this across the model line.

Good on Dodge for offering a diesel in a full size. Clearly there are some who appreciate this.

you may be interested to know that the Fiat sourced ecodiesel in the RAM was originally intended for a CAR. A cadillac sedan in europe prior to GMs near bankruptcy. GM cancelled the project, and Chrysler picked it up.

Companies like Ford are showing that the gap between diesels and gassers is shrinking rapidly. Cheaper to buy up front, cheaper to maintain, less emissions worries, one less engine to certify, etc. The 2.7 has less torque than the RAM diesel, but Ford clearly shows that with a small engine, 2 less speeds in the tranny, less torque, along with some clever engineering, it can still outperform a RAM in acceleration and virtually match the RAMs city rating for fuel economy.

Among other clever features ford introduced on the 2.7L , they introduced a automatic stop/start for city driving on the 2.7, which will surely aid fuel economy for city drivers at stop lights, and guys stuck in stop and go traffic on the highway.

Reliability is a moot point, as they have been proven reliable in the real world since 2011, race series, and Police fleets. Ford has 50+% of the police market locked up and increasingly forces choosing the ecoboost option.

Lots of great options in the pu truck market. Never been a better time to pick... and if you like a diesel, thats ok too......

when you get spanked by Ford, the cleverest solution the whizzes at Chrysler could come up with?

Gaudy, foot tall letters on the tailgate.....

I must have missed that option,,, mine doesn't have it.

Thanks for the review. What was the OTD price on it?

Think I was $42,000 with a few deals.
Options I got were the air bag system, towing package,Diesel,3.92 rear end, front buckets, spray on box liner, and it was the 4x4 SLT package.
A friend just bought the model down with the 5.7 Hemi base model $25,000 out the door.
The Eco Diesel sold me on the torque with the mileage and I plan on keeping it for a while.

Thanks. Lol I actually just built one on the website and yeah it came to 41 and change with some $8000 consumer cash discount.

I wish they'd had that truck when I bought mine. Driving around in a 3/4 ton is rediculas overkill. Heck towing my trailer it's still rediculous overkill but oh well.

I'll be interested to hear about you milage towing. You've got a pretty big trailer so it'll be a good test. I'm sure it'll be better on fuel than the v10 though.

Its like hes brainwashed.

Answer for your "anemic and slow" diesel comments instead of sidestepping the questions and comments by once again sounding like a ****ing Ford salesguy.

I bet the 2.7 doesnt come NEAR the city advertised MPG's....guaran-****ing-teed.

I ALWAYS beat the city and highway mpg's for the Jeep CRD.

I was a bit concerned, but my trailer has three axles which does reduce the tongue weight. The CSBK trailer actually weights more then my trailer and they pulled it no problems all summer. The gas cost to SHuby and back was less then half the V10 costs. With more torque then 5.7 and they put the 5.7 in the 2500. Looking at what guys were pulling with the 5.7 I figured the Eco D would be good. Thought about the 2500 but when I looked under the trucks they look so similar i figured the air bag leveling option would help offset. The 5.7 does not get the same mileage ,,not towing.
I looked at 2 guys with 5.7's pulling 8000 curb weight trailers with SO much stuff in them, I'll bet they push 11,000 loaded and they said they suffered gas mileage when towing and they had some speed loss up hills.
Pulled my trailer with a 1500 5.9 gas prior to the V10 and it was okay just need a bigger rad on really hot days,, but turning the heater on fixed that.
So I'm kind of looking forward to "maybe" passing some gas stations!

Not sure where you've been, but I already posted the performance figures on this thread for the 2.7EB vs the diesel ram. 0-60 AND towing 5000lbs, the significantly cheaper, regular gas burning, lighter 2.7 Ford bests the Ram in acceleration by a significant margin.

it also has more payload capacity than the Ram does too.

As for Ford 2.7 MPG according to Motor Trend :

EPA city/highway/combined 18/23/20

MotorTrend's recorded "real world" mileage figures 17/22/19

Thats pretty damn close in my books. NO salesmanships here. just PURE FACTS.....

He keeps talking about acceleration lol

Let's talk about why the gixxer1000 is better than the zx10 because it has 10 more cubic inches of storage under the passenger seat
