Q for condo folk, how much would you pay for security?

Here is a rough sketch of how this might look, Green is the bike lock, with tracks going under the wheels of the car, blue is the bike in the lock.

I came up with a similar device last year, but it was much more crude. Basically, the concept was the weight of the car keeps the locking system in place. Here was my biggest problem (besides not having the ability or the know how to build one):

Condo board and property manager did not approve. Many condos won't allow anything other than cars, motorcycles and bikes in your parking spot. So far the only thing my condo budged on was the blue wall locking devices for bikes, but only if your spot faces a wall (mine doesn't).

They didn't mind a wheel chock, but didn't approve the tracks. They also said no to the idea of a separate object as an anchor or anything which requires any drilling.

Also, one of the problems I couldn't solve (besides the condo board) was the track itself needed to be very strudy, yet bendable as most spots aren't perfectly flat or leveled.

Rob,

How would it be quite easy? I'm talking about the diagram provided by NVRS242.

It would actually be quite easy, with the proper setup, but what about when you take the car instead of the bike?

It doesn't have to have rails that surround the cars tires. All that you need is a platform that sits under them. Three quarters of 4 car tires on it is as good as all of them.

You don't need to drill anything or make wheel tracks. All you have to do is make it heavy enough, and awkward enough so that it won't be able to be moved from the spot or will fit into a van / pickup.
Given 2 choices, an unsecured bike and one that has 400lbs of steel attached to it the thief will move on to the easy target.

Do it like that and that bike isn't going anywhere. If you're feeling extra paranoid go buy a bunch of 45lb or bigger weight lifitng steel plates and weld a whole bunch onto each corner.

The ideas and people willing to do it are out there, but the market isn't.

I still don't see how would you get the bike in to the "secure" area without moving the car each time?

Although not a bad idea most condo bylaws/declarations/rules say only a motor vehicle and the device would not be allowed. Some do not enforce it but other will with vigor.

The problem is I bet no one notices when the bike is in it. But when you are out riding they will have a problem with the device in the spot.

When we lived in a condo, we found out that the condo board only allowed vehicles in the parking spots. Our Trailer-In-A-Bag counted as a vehicle because it had a license plate attached to it, even though it was stored in the duffel bag. Whatever contraption you design, if it can be designed as a trailer as well, you can license it with the MTO and then remove the wheels and replace with weights or long bars when storing to turn it into a security device.

Might get by some condo rules unless they explicitly state no trailers or only one vehicle per spot.

and i'm almost certain the theives wouldn't really care about being careful around the car while trying to get at the bike...

I like this idea! Now of course actually making it become a trailer must be next to impossible... otherwise it'll make the thief's job much easier... but that is a good way to get around the rules. Add to that, getting a trailer plate is very easy and you can get away with saying it's home made. Also the plate never expires, so you can use it forever.

my condo board is the worst i think. they say passanger vehicles only. i used to have a car, trailer (vertical) and a car in there. they said the trailer had to go and the race bike unless i put a second seat on there. Quite rediculous.

They would never allow any form of security.

Already considered ;) The front axle would be inaccessible once the 'thingy' is fully locked.

Certainly an option. One of the things I was planning on was not having any exposed chains, since they typically end up being the weak point. I have a 6' Kryptonite chain that is long enough to loop through the wheel, frame, etc and reach the 'thingy'.

You've got your product name right there. "The Thingy". Condos love them, thieves hate them! Buy it now!

I would have contended even with 1 seat the bike still carried a passenger/1 human body (aka the rider). Now if it was an unmanned drone, then that would be a different story lol.

I've heard of worse but your situation points to the common problem of condos, the lack of consistancy. New owners moving in bring in new directors and they bring in new rules. Never underestimate the power of old biddies.

Hope u have a patent going, or else it might be made in china for $2

They don't really care about patents in China.

True, but at least u'll prevent a copy from being sold in north america
