Pulled Over By Cop For Giving 9-Year-Old Girl A Motorcycle Ride

It`s Ty as in TYBALT, Thank you!

Any Law that protects children has my support, BILL117 is good thing no different just like the mandatory seat belt laws and booster seats for children under a certain height & age, Keep our kids safe

If I witness people with children on the back of motorcycles, I will report you and see that you receive the appropriate fines and or penalties when Bill117 is imposed , the consequences for you`re poor judgements.-Ty

I see. My apologies.

If I may ask, is your apostrophe (') key broken? I see you keep using the tilde (`) symbol in place of the apostrophe.

If you are having issues, try spraying your keyboard with compressed air, or turn it upside down to release any debris which may be lodged. Or, and I imagine you're at work right now, try contacting your local IT department. I'm certain they would be happy to replace your keyboard for you.

Good luck with that

Please let me know where I can grab a copy of the book, make it out to on the 1st page: Dear Ty, all the Best-Cheers

As his theories were worthless, the book never got written. I would think that was implicit in my statement "...would write a book... Then...."

There are already adequate laws in place, regarding passengers on motorcycles. Bill 117 is dead. As I said, non-issues require non-solutions. "Think before you legislate" should be tattooed on the inside of every politician's eyelids, so that they don't spew this feel good, do nothing legislation.

That's unfortunate, Sounds like it had the making of a NY's Best top seller, very ironic-Ty

His premise was that riders should use the same system that is used by commercial aviators. It was a seriously flawed comparison in that, no matter if you do everything right yourself, some nutter can still take you out with a quick swerve.

The law now states that any passenger must be wearing a (properly fitted and approved) motorcycle helmet and be capable of reaching the passenger pegs, with his feet.

It's not my house. I'm a guest here, like everyone else. I'm simply tired of laws being created to deal with situations, that simply don't exist.

So that makes you invincible... you'll never get hit because you've been riding for 30 years..... Awesome logic:)

Actually Yeah! the proof is, I`m still here alive & riding, must be something to my logic or method to my madness.-Ty

Okay, since we've already agreed to disagree.... :laughing8: I'm gonna question your logic just 'cause, well....it's flawed. Even though you feel taking a young passenger is too dangerous, you seem convinced that your years of experience make motorcycling a safe practice for you. Is that what you're saying? 'Cause it sure sounds that way. Riding since the 80's has done that for you? AWESOME! Guess how long I've had my M? C'mon! Do it! :director: Do it! TWENTY TWO YEARS. You might want to remember when you're talking about WOW, etc. that not all of us here are bouncy, glowy-skinned 20 year olds with little life/riding experience.... Well, I'm glowy-skinned but I got those great genes my motorcycle-ridin' mama has! ;)

What Nyx was saying on the bike she feels safer because she can get out of those situations that you can't with a car...

I think if the parent is a responsible rider and puts the kid in full out gear head to toe, then why not let them ride with you. Like Nyx said a kid is more likely to get hurt doing other things....

Yup, that is exactly what I'm saying. Thank you! Each time I sat there helplessly watching while things came at me in my car :( All my injuries (aside a couple from skiing) are from car accidents...and all the car accidents could have been avoided if I was on my bike! I had nowhere to go in my car...it's too big, too slow and apparently has a freakin' target painted on it by 60-70 year old men!

The bill never passed because again....there are no stats to warrant it. Swimming, hockey, skiing/snow boarding, hell...even walking in a driveway or parking lot, etc. are more dangerous activities according to statistics. You just have to listen to the news one summer week or after a long weekend to hear about the deaths. No one's trying to outlaw beach swims (at least not yet)...are they?

Not interested in getting into a pissing contest with you, I made my point(s), I stand by them, I own them, said what i needed to say about the issue, moved on-Ty

I have been reading this thread and it is really fascinating. Personal too since I took my kid on the cycle yesterday for a spin. Lots of opinions being thrown around. Lots of attitude too. Amazing that motorcyclists (who are on a motorcyclist forum) are so absolutist on what is 'dangerous'. I'm sorry but that is funny.

Are motorcycles dangerous: damn straight they are! But so is driving a cage, riding a bicycle, crossing the street or lighting a BBQ.

It seems to me that the issue with both kids on motorcycles and motorcycles in general is the definition of 'dangerous'. Everybody has a definition of 'dangerous' that is so obvious to them that it does not need to be explained: "I don't have to respect your definition because mine is so obviously correct."

for example, if I ride a bicycle to work downtown I am being 'green', healthy, socially conscious, community minded, etc. No one ever talks about the danger. However, if I ride a motorcycle, I am being a lunatic, self centered, danger seeking, maniac. All they talk about is the danger. The difference of perspective boils down to the difference between A) If I get hit on my bicycle, it was the idiot cager's fault, and B) if I am hit on my motorcycle, it was my fault for being stupid enough to ride amongst the idiot cagers in the first place.

(The fact is that if you are wearing the same protective clothing and you get hit by a cage on either a bike or a cycle, you will be hurt. How much depends on the particulars of how you were hit, and what you were wearing. I got hit by a drunk doing 120 when I was doing 10 and I walked away. If I was in my car I would have been crushed. Does that make me safe or dangerous? no, it makes me lucky) Therefore blame is apportioned not based on my behaviour but rather on what you think is dangerous.

If you ask my definition, life is dangerous. Plain and simple. You can do everything right and still have things turn out bad. It's how you approach danger is that is the key.

As for children: rather than avoiding all danger, what we need to do is teach our kids how to handle danger. I know the knife is sharp but my kids don't. How do I teach them? Lots of ways and each one has it's own risk/reward.

I have adopted the attitude with my kids that it is better for them to learn from a dynamic approach rather than an absolutist rule WHEN they are in a position to learn from the situation. But that is a judgment call; each parent has to make that choice. Just because we make different choices doesn't mean that one of us is wrong.

** Side note; my 8 year old just came up to me and told me that somebody on Moshi Monsters asked for her email and she hit ignore. We have been going over internet safety recently and my attitude is that it is better for them to learn how to be safe rather than trying to keep them away from danger.

As for me and the cycle and my daughter, I went out a bought a Snell helmet, Tourmaster Jett youth jacket, gloves, boots and knee/shin guards. I also put my turtleback on her (jacket fits better). Cost me an arm and a leg. Is someone going to call me an idiot? yes. Is she 'safe'??? I don't know what that means but I do know that she is safer than without it and she gives me **** if I don't go out ATGATT. (Did you all know that there are NO riding pants for kids. Dirtbike yes, but no street pants for kids. Kinda stupid that it is legal for a kid to ride and there are no riding pants.) Is she learning to deal with danger? yes.

(Did you see my friend who was saved by his gear: http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?143337-ATGATT-...under-unusual-circumstances )

Sorry for the lecture. I really should be out there riding. As for the cop, well maybe he made a decision as a parent rather than as a cop. The point is that he made a decision and you can't fault a guy for that.

Feel free to flame me

Ok fine... I think it's child abuse if I see a kid eating at McDonald's.

Sounds stupid doesn't it? Ya, your point does too.

Pfttt.... fine. Sorry....:sad11: That one was too good to let slide though.

*bows* Goodnight folks! I''l be here all year. Be sure to to tip your waitress..and if you can't tip her, give her a hearty nudge! I'm out.

Look for Ty riding sans kidlet and me...with or without...

Cheers!

See y'all at BBoyz!

It would seem to me that the people in this thread that are against having a child as a passenger on a motorcycle are wasting breath err...typed words here. Law states feet must reach the footpegs and have a helmet that meets dot standards. If you feel thats wrong talk to the law makers, not the people on this forum. As long as these requirments are meet then there is NOTHING you can do about it EXCEPT worry about YOURSELF and YOUR actions. This also goes for all the ATGATT threads that spring up here durring a heat wave. You can argue that all you want but it won't get you anywhere. Don't like the rules? I guess you can always try and change them, but that won't happen here.

Fair enough but we live in different times unfortunately today.

I agree with you somewhat.. These are different times but it doesnt necessarily mean we have to shadow our children with ever step they take or hide their eyes to reality. I see bad things happen on a daily basis and I wouldnt stop riding ever, and when they day comes that my kids want to go for a ride with me, I'll be a happy dad. I agree they should be able to touch the passenger pedals and be able to hold onto you before we go anywhere. I just think people these days are quick to caudle their children and were creating a society of "push-overs" if you will.

I would not personally give a 9 year old a ride on my bike as I think that they are still way too young; however, you are absolutely right as there is no law against this. The cop that pulled you over was just a moron that thinks he/she can use their powers for any odd reason. If that would happen to me, I would actually have called my lawyer for my precious time being wasted :)

haha priceless! I agree though. The amount of over weight, iphone having, ps3 playing kids these days is unreal. That I think is child abuse from the parents and the inability to say no to him/her

I have to ask 911R6, do you know the difference between garbage men and paramedics??
