Profiled for not the color of skin but vehicle you choose to drive - this is not OK

“Normally you’d pick it up and just ride off” is loosely what the cop says. So you fu**ed up the bike for no valid reason but he should just ride off! The whole situation is ridiculous. The rider took it very well, better than I likely would have and I’m generally a very calm person.

If he knew bikes he couldve just flipped the killswitch! "YOUVE BEEN PUNKED! LICENSE AND REGISTRATION"

Or grabbed the clutch or turned the key or . . .cop is hosed here. About the only out they have is if that plate number has a history of running but it sounds like it wasnt possible for them to see it from their car so they have no justification for assaulting him.

We're in a Western country.

Just sue the ******* cops with the video. Problem solved!

News has picked it up. It was on CHCH. Cop tried to pay for bike damage out of his own pocket. He knows this is not going to go well in the court of public opinion.

I can't see much interesting in link, but there may be more as story develops. Apparently there is a video as well.

Oh boy. Bike needs to go to Sturgess Cycle and every piece that has the slightest scratch on it replaced with new, by a qualified mechanic. It will be over $3000. And of course the rider needs a rental bike to replace that one while it's in the shop.

Wrong western country. How much would you sue for, because that's Not the way it works in this country, he will be lucky to see only the money that he can prove he is out of pocket for. The other cop was remiss in his duty to uphold the law too, he should have put a stop to the assault, would you try to sue him too? or just give them both an unscheduled vacation with pay and sensitivity training, which is far more likely to be the end result.

Nastiest thing the cop could have done was to impound the vehicle, then try to prove it was not road worthy to begin with. Still does not justify the assault, but it would destroy the motorcyclists credibility and interest in pressing charges.

... Camera is starting to look like a very good idea.

I didnt bother watching the entire original video but the edit with the key points is pretty damning. As expected, the cops version is "the bike fell" not the "I flattened the guy and bike while they were sitting there". Paying for it with what he had in his wallet shows he has no idea what this will cost (all the bike parts plus any gear that was scratched plus any rehab buddy needs to recover from the tackle).

Crazy. There just seemed to be a lot of anger there at the beginning. And they actually let this guy carry a gun???? I think its good that the guy kept his cool. It could have ended much worse for him

Generally I'll take the police side and a large percentage do a good job protecting us, however there just seems to be more and more thugs and bullies being hired.

Everyone has the right to go about their day to day business without being assaulted.

As an aside;
Remember a couple of years ago, a bunch of motorcyclists took over highways and did stupid stuff? Most of those riders hid their plates.

Cops got mad.
When you hide your plate, they think you were one of those idiots on the highway doing stupid stuff.

I'm not saying this is right or wrong. I'm saying it IS. This cop isn't the only cop with a hardon for bike with a hidden plate.

Id only feel worried to the point of running a camera for my safety if i was doing something questionable on the regular.

I don't run flip plates, I don't ride like a menace - i speed here and there and my exhaust may raise eyebrows depending on how i push, but by no means am i worried of being tackled by a cop at any point.

gotta make this right what can we do
shoulda said

How about we disarm you and handcuff your hands behind your back until we figure it out.

I hope the rider has hired a lawyer. He was assaulted and must sue the cop and the police force he works for. If he was injured, possibly bruised it must be reported to the SIU. Its a sure bet the cops won't do this on thier own. His lawyer with this video evidence can contact the SUI to investigate there is an investigation. If the cop is charged by the SIU, his stellar career will be blemished and his ability to advanced his career will be limited. I don't beleive any that any police force would condone this type of behavior. This is completely outrageous.

SIU cannot investigate this. They need death or serious injury before than can invoke their mandate.

Suing isn't that profitable in Canada once you've paid for a good lawyer.

Agree. Nobody is getting rich off this. Best possible outcome in my mind is police force treats it seriously and creates and enforces a policy that prohibits similar events. Honestly, it looks like the cop should catch an assault charge too but the chance of any meaningful outcome is so slim, I am sad to say I doubt it is worth the money to pretend to do the trial.

It is not a question of profit, its a question of restitution. In Canada the winner will be awarded his court costs, that included his lawyer fees. This is a rogue cop endangering the public. The victim was handcuffed for what reason? A possible highway traffic act violation? He wallet was searched without a warrant. Lots a red flags here. The assault is the most concerning.

you can be handcuffed while detained.

i watched the video once, sounded like he gave the cop the go ahead on retrieving it.
