Post up PICS of members bikes?

  • Thread starter aRcTiC_cAt_LaKe_DrAgEr
  • Start date
Over time on posts, members tend to give bits of information that by itself may not amount to much, but put together..plus a pic of the bike, can give thieves a good indication of where to go get it (i.e please tell me a good place to park my bike for work on bay street, etc)

Not saying everyone does, just saying that many people tend to forget the bread crum track they leave behind them.

Another example
Adress of house can be seen in the back, SUV license plate can be seen as well (thieves may have a friend that can give them peoples adresses by their plate number)Find the SUV and you have found yourself a brand new 09 ZX6R to steal

My Ninja ZX6R :)

How do they do that? How can they get my address out of my photos? Or my riding destinations...

How can they do that eh!!

Hmm.. lets see...

recent picture, this one for example..I recognized this right away as being taken with a cell phone!

A quick right click will tell you it's hosted by

Another right click --> save as - and you have the file saved locally on your HD.

NEXT
open the picture with ANY competent photviewer... (I'm using ACDSee in this example).

reveal the EXIF data and - what do you know
reveal.png

Next I walk on over to google maps and do a little searchy seachy....

The "A" is the approximate address - the green arrow is where the bike was during the picture..

All this, without leaving my desk.

Awesome Job ilustrating my point DJ, thanks - Once again Mods should close and erase this thread, we are just helping those ****** bag thieves steal our bikes

Good point Retro, I'll make a Survey thread

Very impressive!
But this works for cellphone shots, right?

Nope! People can decide for themselves. But I do agree with you on your initial observation.

Works for cell phone shots IF the user enabled (or didn't disable) geotagging...
Some newer point and shoots are coming with Geotagging too.

Many online image hosting sites scrub the exif data out... many do not.
Again, it's a useful feature - but I suppose it can be used against you.

It's a great feature... but like naked pics of your girlfriend, they have a time and a place.

Wow! Another thing to watch out for!

Thanks for sharing the info!

I agree... no need to close the thread... people chose to post here.

besides.. most thieves steal from Condo's - unlikely to get a decent Geotagged image from a condo P-lot

yea but most people don't know how easy is to find their location as you just demostrated and are naive, they just got their new biike and are eager to show it off. As per my post, there are many ways to find where your bike is, even if you are in a condo

This page will be lost amongst many other pages and innocent members will continue to post their bikes pics

We can't protect everyone from the internets....
Perhaps a simple warning message before posting.

I like to see pics of peoples bikes.

Can't thank you enough for this post! i immediately took down my post and prey that my first child doesn't go missing!

I am not sure how knowing latitude and longitude of where a picture of a bike was taken is useful information for a thief.

It's only where a bike happened to be at a particular time. If you stand at the corner of any major intersection you will know the location of many bikes at many particular times, as they pass through.

because many people are obviously taking pic's right in front of their houses.

you scare me sometimes, DJ. you don't work for CSIS, do you??? :p

I don't trust any online host to remove exif data, so here's what I do to deal with this.

Download jhead (Website, exe link) to somewhere on your hard drive.

Create a shortcut on your desktop (Right click on the downloaded exe, choose Send to -> Desktop (Create shortcut)), right click it and choose Properties. In the target field you'll have something like:

"C:\Documents and Settings\User1\My Documents\Downloads\jhead.exe"

Add " -de %*" to the end so it's changed to something like:

"C:\Documents and Settings\User1\My Documents\Downloads\jhead.exe" -de %*

Hit OK, rename the shortcut to "Remove Exif". Now you have a shortcut on your desktop that you can simply drag and drop a file (or multiple files at once) onto to strip the exif data off.

To test that it's working, right click the unmodified original file, go to Summary and choose Advanced, there is probably a ton of info there. Drag it to the short cut, check the Summary again, and it should be clean as a whistle :)

^^^ good to know. very eye-opening!
fortunately, most of my posted pics are taken with a POS 4MP camera which does not have any geo-referencing capability (at least not that I know of).

yea but most people don't know how easy is to find their location as you just demostrated

Now they do.

If it is feasible I agree with a little warning box for the people who are eager to post their pic here.

Exif removal tool seems to bee a cool idea too.

As I get older and older I see less and less need to post my life on the Internet. That's why I don't have a Facebook page anymore... Not that I used it a lot before...
