Please help with airline info, anyone!

My friend is nomadic and doesn't know if he wants to stay in BC long-term and doesn't want to go through the hassle of changing residency, with all the tax, healthcare and insurance complications.

You know your friend better than anyone but chances are that he does not want to settle in BC. He probably wants to keep searching for the ideal place to live in.

Yup, once it gets to that stage I'm actually considering that.

EDIT: Back on topic. @Chris-CJ where in Mississauga are you? I'm in the L5C area and if push comes to shove I may be able to grab your car for you depending on when I get home and when you're anticipated. I'm sure I can score some groceries as well as a last resort if you don't have someone close to help out.
The offer is appreciated, thanks!

I will prolly go the rental route, my car is (a) up on jacks (b) is a stick shift (c) I have asked insurance for a 45 day non-use discount.

Have no intentions of breaking the drive home for any stops, especially after that loooong flight and loss of circadian rhythm crossing all those time zones... stand in a grocery queue, no way :-)

BTW, there are over 1000 applicants for the approx 600 seats on two of the extraction flights, so I am not holding my breath.... children, women, sick and seniors go first, and I am good with that.

If you are getting someone to pick up some groceries , you may not need 2 weeks of groceries right off the start.

Only 4-5 days worth. Once you get home, you can order via delivery.

For whoever it may help ... I just got an email from Avis:

"During these unprecedented times, Avis can help you get to your home or family safely and responsibly. We are offering low rate, one way rentals* from any of our hundreds of locations to assist our customers with their essential travel needs.

Now through April 30, we are also waiving the young driver fee for drivers 21-24 years of age*. As always, if you choose to pay later, you can change or cancel any time without a fee.

There are friendly neighbourhood locations near you where you can get 10% off already low rates*. "

Avis looks like a great deal for one way rentals
best check the fine print though

Much less in miles than kms....so you might be able to get some points there. But with my distance it's about....$2200....still better than $3100.

Last time I did a one way car rental was Sudbury Airport to Pearson when my flight was cancelled, that was 10 years ago and even then it was $450. So the numbers for BC to ON don't seem all that off to me, it ain't cheap...

Some of the car rentals are not allowing for pick-up at one location and drop off at another due to their own COVID protocols.

Best option is to have someone either leave your car at the airport or to meet you there and "hand" (toss) you the keys to your car (if you don't have the keys) or their car, via physical distancing. If their car, sort it out later. They will need a separate way home.

You absolutely must have someone else pick up 2 weeks worth of supplies/groceries, either have them in the above mentioned car or already in your fridge. Don't be a prick and hit the stores on the way home, which is also illegal now as I understand it.

If there is a hassle at the airport with a rental some companies will drop off a vehicle. Is it possible to do the transaction on line, they deliver the car to the airport and throw you the keys. Do you have a spot to park it until either you or the car meet the quarantine regulations? They can pick up as well.

There's probably some regulation at the airport that bans this.

For those who participated (and helped with good advice - thank you!), here is an update.

My ETA at Pearson...
Ideally, "yesterday"
Practically, "unknown".

The situation ......
There was a scramble for the six expatriation flights. 15K stranded Canadians competing for approx 1800 seats at a minimum of $2900 per seat plus only a prior-boarding basic temperature check. Who's to say that one of the 300 pax is not an asymptomatic COVID-19 carrier, 14 hours in a closed environment with that "possibility"?

It was a tough call to "stay" or "go" and I am betting on the odds of COVID-19 planking and the subsequent resumption of at least some of the regular commercial (and more reasonably priced!) flights back to Pearson.

Short term pain for long term gain, so with fingers crossed, I wait.

Cheers.

Either way, good luck and stay safe.
Do let us know when you are back on Canadian soil.

Hope you have a safe place to stay while over there in India.

I have an acquaintance in Panama and it's in lock down there as well with no passenger flights in or out. She moved there because one can live in relative luxury on a modest income.

I don't think she was at the festival but there was a huggy type beach festival and using cell phones was discouraged. When someone did log in it became a crap show of trying to leave but couldn't, regulations, restrictions, confusion.

The US has apparently told US citizens living there to suck it up for at least a month or two, maybe longer.

Still here, hunkered down and hoping that the COVID-19 levels off and regular flights start.
Am reluctant to apply for a seat on the extraction flights as it is a dice-roll that these well may be flying incubators.
The Consul General here estimates that some semblance of normality will happen in the third week of June....waited this long, may as well wait till then.
Thank you for your concern and for asking :-)

Chris-CJ, Good luck and all that. Hope UA gave you your money back...I had a return flight from Qatar for mid May and that flight is cancelled and I got an email that stated that the portion will be returned to me or I can get a voucher. So any flights that are cancelled seems like is being refunded.

The Indian healthcare is cheap and good, nothing to worry about. Family doctors are everywhere but try to hit up the bigger chains of hospital if need be. You can get the prescription filled almost anywhere and mostly without any questions so if you guys are running low, start phoning around the local hospital, they'll send the orderly with the meds in most cases.

Just heard that the India govt will shortly open up the skies to travel but on a negotiated basis. Using Twitter, I have requested our Foreign Minister, my local MP and the Can HC in India to twin the BOM-YYZ sector and open up regular flights on this leg. This will also save them time/money, by negating the need for the expensive extraction flights. Hopefully, these fine gents hear my "call in the wilderness" and I can be home for the riding season!
