Plastic bags illegal in Toronto by Jan 1, 2013

Seriously?

Then compare it to your phone - 10 years ago I didn't carry one - now I do. Simple adjustment.

Just think - you may need a bag at some point today. Bring one along.

I get what you're trying to say, but I just don't see it.. A phone fits in your pocket.. Let's say you are someone who doesn't have a car.. You take the TTC, you're going to leave home with 3 or 4 of these bags folded up in your pocket every day in case you need to go to the store?

I think they should've just left it as is and leave the 5 cent fee. I don't even live in Toronto, but I've changed up my habits and bring reusable bags when I go out shopping. Heck, if it's one or two things I don't really need a bag at all. But I do see that it will be a PITA when you need to do last minute shopping and you don't have your bags with you. But people will adjust.

I agree.. The 5cents was enough to make you think about whether or not you needed it, and yes.. I usually don't use them.. I bring my reusable bags, or if buying one or two items I just carry them out.. But if I get to the store un-expected.. My wife calls me at work and asks me to pickup 10 things on my way home, I need to be able to carry them home somehow, and I'll gladly pay the 5cents.

whatever - if I had kids like you guys I'd smack some sense into them. Complaining because YOU can't remember something.

Who's complaining? I'm confused now.

They should have plastic bags available for those few times that we forget our own. They should not charge a HUGE mark up on them. If they want to charge for them, that's fine but be reasonable I think.

I have thrown out a huge garbage full of reusable bags because they take up WAY to much space and there's no way I would use them all. I have bags in all my vehicles including my bike (top case). But there are times (which has been mentioned) that I buy more than I have bags for.

Such a simple matter and people just have to mess with it.

Well failed humour aside.

Instead of whining about it on a forum. You could invest that time to write your MP (assuming you live in the affected city)

Just saying.

:)

That's another good point - there are times when I haven't brought quite enough of my cloth bags, and I need a few extra plastic bags to compensate.

I hope city council in Mississauga doesn't jump on this bandwagon. But then again, they don't have a mayor that they're trying to piss off. :p

For those in favour of the ban:

-what do you use for your green bin?

-what do you use for your cat litter?

-what do you use for your dog poopin' and scooping'?

Call me naive but it's not like people just toss the things. They have multiple uses after for sure. With them being banned it just means you'll have to buy other plastic bags to supplement those bags wih other plastic bags youll need to purchase.

wtf, now I'm going to have to actually buy bags for garbage? as suppose to recycle i get? :( balls!

also how am I supposed to carry multiple freaking bags of food n **** to my house when the paper can not hold up the weight...

I think Ford needs to get a bag up his... hello!!!

paper bags will be an option, so if you buy too much you can always brown bag it.

when i go to no frills if i forget the grocery bags they have a stack of empty boxes that i can put my groceries in, this is a better option, the boxes get reused and hopefully recycled after used to transport groceries. I'm not seeing a problem here.

being a dog owner I will miss the convenient source of poop bags, but i can live with that.

I do use them as garbage bags as well (metro's work best with my cabinate door mounted garbage can), i don't know if the bags you can buy for those things are as cheap as 5c each, i do know i've found the metro bags to be stronger and they have the handles the loop over the built in hooks.

councilor David Shiner (Willowdale) is responsible for this

and I think that if he wasn't planning on retiring at the end of this term, he may want to rethink it....he positions himself as a right-leaning PC in an area where that's what gets the vote....so I'm thinking that his little grandstanding here is gonna cost him

I despise Gov't social engineering and this 5 cent bag farce has had me livid since the day it was levied....and it has not stopped me from using the supplied plastic bags....I just don't buy the green-bin bags and use the ones the groceries are put in......I think that when you shop at a store weekly and drop on average - $200 per visit...you should get free supplied bags to carry out as a courtesy.....and most of the damn stuff your buying is all wrapped in plastic anyway....so making a point over the carry-out bags and punishing consumers is just a short-sighted farce by a group of useless bureaucrats

For those in favour of the ban:

-what do you use for your green bin?

The clear plastic baggies you get in the produce section, those will not be subject to the ban.

-what do you use for your cat litter?

Don't have a cat

-what do you use for your dog poopin' and scooping'?

Doggie bags I buy at the pet store, again those aren't on the chopping block, it's strictly plastic grocery bags used to haul the goods out after purchase.

I'm quite happy they did this. I wish they would continue and ban all plastic water bottle, pop bottles, packaging.. Pepole will stomp and cry and pout like kids who have a toy taken away, but the world will continue, a little cleaner hopefully..

Somehow my parents managed with paper bags.. And you can use your own cotton bags.. You know, I don't want to generalize and say people are short-sighted..but plastic isn't a good thing..

They should ban plastic bottles too.

Its ridiculous how wasteful we are in modern society. The only way to change it is obviously through aggressive regulation/legislation. We're pigs.

Yup..

not sure how old you are...but there were a few good reasons why they stopped using paper and went to plastic.....and then we did the right thing and went biodegradable and recycled

this whole thing is a circle-jerk...and if the stores go back to paper then I give it 3 years before the cries start again about forestry

I actually chuckle when I see people with bottled water piled high in their cart because there's a sale on for WATER.

I don't want to get the reputation of being environmentally unfriendly here.. But there comes a point where living our lives has to trump these initiatives.. I'm all for going for the greener option when it's available.. But we aren't just going to start going without..

Same as the plastic bags.. I have a reusable water bottle at home and at the office which I use most of the time..no sense in drinking 8 bottles a day and filling the trash (or the recycle bin) But I don't carry it with me EVERYWHERE I go.. And if I get thirsty when out and about.. There needs to be somewhere I can buy water in a bottle..

The toronto conference center no longer serves up bottle water when you are having a convention there .. It's their big environmental initiative.. Is it actually putting out less plastic? Nope.. They served bottled juice instead.. So now the same amount of pollution gets out, but you have to drink sugar all day while your there.. They don't serve "bottled water" though..

Recycle when you can, do your part.. But live your lives.. Some of this stuff just goes way too far..you have to draw the line somewhere. I already know someone is going to disagree with me here, and that's fine.. Entitled to your opinion and what not.. But you are on a motocycle forum.. I don't see you selling it for a pedal bike with wooden wheels because gas and rubber are bad.. So you've drawn your line somewhere too.
