Phone woes

So im looking to buy a new phone, as I hate my Iphone and apple in general(Stupid apple password required to download simple apps, cant use audible on older iphones, and general UI annoys me to no end etc etc ) im looking to get an android, but I would like an affordable option, my experience from the past( and what led me to buy the iphone in the first place) was that the cheaper mid tier brands(htc, lenovo, LG etc etc) tended to without exception last me about a year before they stopped working

I like that the iphone has lasted me longer than a year and has been robust, but for reasons mentioned Im looking at samsung right now, what im wondering is if anyone has experience with mid tier phones from premium brands(like the samsung A series ) im looking at the A71, how are they? Will it last me just as long as an S20?

Are there other quality/robust yet affordable phones that I am missing?

Tldr version:
Im looking for a phone that is:
-Affordable
-Can use Audible(important)
-Robust and will last long

I couldnt care less about frivolous features like the most cutting edge camera, or a fancy graphics chipset

thanks!

For what it's worth, I'm still rocking samsung galaxy s7. It was flagship back then. I think I got it few months after its release, fall of 2016?

I did replace battery and motherboard myself last year and that cost about 100 bucks.

I do want a new phone but my Koodo plan is pretty good so I'll need to buy a phone outright if I want to keep that plan. And that's expensive if I want an above midrange phone from big company. So I'm waiting till this really breaks.

I'd be interested to find out what others say.

I was also looking at huawei but I hear they have some WIFI issues, the P30's can only connect to 2.4 ghz
Also im not sure if they're as good as apple/samsung in terms of sheer build quality

Oneplus 7. I think you can only get a 7T or something now, but you were able to get one+7 for $520 cash at one point.

I had one before my note 10+, only 'upgraded' because work gave me 40% off. Sold it to my friend whose loving it. Wife to be has one, she's had no complaints for almost 7 months.

Still rocking a Samsung Galaxy S8 here. Had an S5 for years with no issues.

Out of contract so I am pondering a S10 or S20.

Oddly enough my wife just left the Android world for an Iphone and she is pretty happy so far. Mind you I kind of pushed her that way because she had several dying ipods and I thought the iphone could replace tge ipods and phone. So far she is pretty happy.

Stubbornly hanging on to my Galaxy Note 5. Replaced the battery twice, both times I ended up buying low quality batteries while trying to buy good ones.

Have a Pixel 3A in a drawer for when the Note 5 truly dies. I don't really like any of the Notes that have come since, and the new ones are ridiculously expensive. Was interested in the new Moto G Stylus, but apparently the stylus part kinda sucks. I would recommend the Pixel 3A for now, I don't really like how Samsung supports their non-flagship phones (or even their flagship phones) with software updates. I feel pretty confident that Google is going to keep the Pixel 3A up to date for a while still. New iPhone SE seems pretty alright too, and so far Apple does a better job supporting their phones than anybody else does.

I dunno man, audible isnt exactly an intensive app far as resources are concerned, but I HAVE to upgrade to a newer phone if I want to use it
(I have an Iphone 6 which is like 5 years old?) I got it 2 years ago on a pretty sweet deal

Take a look at Nokia. They are doing some interesting things with android one and ongoing updates.

Apple iPhone 5S (y) best phone I ever owned, works the same as the day I bought it and the battery still holds a charge for more then a day.

Apple does a good job of making phones/tablets that work for a long time without hardware problems. They do have a deadline though where ios updates stop and very shortly after, all apps stop working as you need he latest version of the app which needs the latest IOS which means you still have a phone but it has lost its smarts.

precisely, if audible would work with my iphone 6, I would not be looking to replace it

But apparently the ios update wont go any further than 12.99999

Get a Windows phone. Best phone. Thanks.

Pixel 3a or a 3. Or maybe wait for the 4a our discounted 4. Google will support it for a long time. Most manufacturers are slow to update their software and between manufacturer and carries most phones are left without updates. The pixel interface is pure Android without any manufacturer clutter. They are very responsive and snappy. Android Q button-less interface is very nice. Flagship camera.

For what it's worth the 3 onwards is build by another manufacturer to google's specs.

Another advantage is of the pixel is esim dual sim. With a service like airalo you can get cheap data in most countries and there's no need to search for a local sim. USA $3 1GB $16 5GB. It's even good if you run out of data in Canada you can get cheaper data from them than the carrier data. Here's my reference code for a 10% discount.

I was not previously aware of this application of eSIMs, this looks like a really good way to go for travelling

I didn't apply the updates and I never downloaded a single app ;) that's why it still works every bit as good as the day I bought it.
