PC Gamers!

ya i hear you.

it just hurts to drop big bucks on a lappy...but just go to futureshop or bestbuy.

Alienware is just a name, look at comparable alienware laptops, focus on the video card/cpu & ram.

then compare that spec to something at futureshop.

or a used alienware with warantee on kijiji is cool too

Never thought about used but I have seen refurbished with new warranty on them. I'm not so concerned about keeping up with the latest graphics yearly so if I could get something that could run the latest games now I coiled probably stretch the laptop out 3 years or so. What I really want is a laptop that stays cool and I find that gaming laptops seem to have top notch cooling systems in them (for laptops anyway). I also use my laptop to watch movies and host ufc ppv nights outside and I find that my current HP gets super hot after a few hours. I am going to get some sort of cooling device for that later today. I'm just not up to par knowledge wise anymore with today's parts. I was a p.c. gamer back in the 90's and early 2000's and I have gone console since then. Thanks for the suggestions! If anyone has had a gaming laptop what brand was it and how did you rate the quality?

BTW hit up tribes ascend last night hard and proper...game ****ing rocks!

i5-2500K @ 4.8Ghz (currently actually at 4.4Ghz, recent BIOS update screwed up my overclock)
Coolermaster Hyper-212 EVO
Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 mobo
2x4GB GSkill DDR3-1866
AMD 5750 & 5770 in Crossfire
2TB WD Green Caviar configured with OCZ Vertex 3 60GB as Intel SRT cache drive

TwistedKestrel on Steam, I've been mostly playing World of Tanks lately though

OP, what do you do for a living? Surely those Sun workstations aren't just for playing games.

Hahaha I was wondering when someone would catch that... I do audio/video stuff. Premiere, AfterEffects, ProTools, etc. The workstations are a few years old now, but they're still holding up quite well.

re-pluggin tribes...played big time last night...what a ****ing awesome game!
you hit 200-250 kph on those skii's flying around and skiing shooting

learning curve is minimal and your decently competitive in like 30-60 minutes of play time....i wanna play now!

I played it for a while ... F2P kinda rubs me the wrong way in a competitive game like that, but it's not a big deal. It's more that my wimpy Crossfire setup chokes on that game, plus I sank soooooo many hours into the original Tribes that I thought to myself "do I really wanna do this over again?"

My friends' Sager, Clevo and Eurocom laptops are comparable, but still don't measure up to my M18x. You get what you pay for. And if you call in, you get mad discounts. Even further if you're a university student.

*Cough* the M18x I'm selling is under the Complete Care warranty *cough*

I want something portible though. I know a gaming laptop won't touch a tower but like I said I like to go outside with it.

Shameless plug aside, Sager, Clevo and Asus make gaming laptops. But they're still in the Alienware M14x - M17x price range without the benefits.

... but at 17"+ it's not really a laptop anymore...

It's a "Desktop Replacement"

Still mobile. I lugged around my M18x all year for classes. Besides, what's the point of gaming on a tiny screen?

I have an Alienware m17x (Intel Core i7 2630QM, 8GB DualCh DDR3 1600MHz 4DIM, 17.3-inch WideFHD1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED, 1.5GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M, 1.5TB Raid 0 (2x 750GB 7,200RPM) and find it pretty decent for gaming. Sure, it doesn't touch my gaming rig in terms of benchmarks (my gaming rig's Radeon 5970 is hard to touch)

Macs' 18x is 1" larger than mine and would be a great choice!! You really can't go wrong with Alienware if you're willing to pay the premium; I use my laptop as a media center as well, and leave it powered on 24/7. I've owned it since last October, and can leave it WEEKS without a crash or requiring a reboot.

You might also want to consider an Asus gaming series laptop such as the one linked below - pretty much the same hardware specs as Alienware without the branding costs involved:

OK - to make things easier I created a Steam group for GTAM:

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/GTAMGamerZ

I made it an "invite only" group so that only members of GTAM can get access. To join the group, send me a PM with your steam profile page in this format:

http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197964454066

I'll try to find the profile pages of the steam IDs listed above, but like I said it's hard to find the right player (since so many people use the same name) so if you send me a PM with your profile page it will make it much easier to add you.

EDIT - the only members I could find manually were TwistedKestrel, Cmdr. Sweetpea, and _kobayashi_maru. The rest of you guys please link me your profile pages...
