Over 22,000 speed tickets issued in TO for the month of April

$718, was the highest fine issued by the Robo-Cam, no demerit points or entries on the driving record.

That number represents a lot of fast (and maybe furious!) drivers.

Aren't these the cameras that ticketed you for going 1 km/h over?

A few random thoughts on this....
  • This is a seven figure payday for the city each month.
  • I am surprised the glass on these things doesn't get spray painted daily.
  • If you get cutoff by someone in a car you can rent (hey I need to rent a black Hyundai....), I guess you can make a fake plate and do racing laps past the cameras. Might end roadrage....
A friend was on a jobsite and there was a camera on his route, he got over a thousand in fines racked up in the company van before he got the first ticket. All were just over 10 over. Drove past it everyday....

But it's all about safety. Dont you read the press releases? If it was really about safety they would notify you very quickly so you changed your behaviour. Same problem as photo radar last time. They need to drop all comments about safety as they are pretty much bs. Just call it fundraising or selective taxation. Photo radar is an easy way to raise a lot of money (and an easy tax to avoid if you dont want to pay it).

When they use the word ‘safety’ or ‘think of the children’ to achieve a goal you know it’s BS.

It’s a cash grab pure and simple. Call it what it is. Don’t want to pay? Don’t speed. Or speed faster than the camera is possible to catch a photo.

Think anyone that really believes it's about safety needs to get their head checked lol

I guess the city is making up for all the years of doing nothing, and allowing rampant bad behaviour go unchecked.
They have been policing more in my area, I regularly see cops pulling over speeders on a couple roads, where they haven't before. (y)

I cant speak for toronto but barrie dispatch definitely broadcasts streets where speeding complaints have been registered and extra patrols are requested. Cops acknowledge the request. Not sure what happens after that.

Didnt top gear try that with uk speed cameras? Somewhere north of 300 km/h IIRC. Even if you are a complete ass in a very fast car, if the ontario cameras are similar technology you will have trouble attaining sufficient speed.
This guy gets it…300kph…need downforce.

My neighbors have heard loud engines on some streets. They've complained to their Councillors that there is street racing going on.
Some hapless locals will get dinged; surely the ones who complained. Hopefully, we won't get any more speed bumps, chicanes, or street narrowing; van is wide/low enough without that nonsense.

Our speed camera is in a 40 zone that should by rights be a 60, beside a high school where students should be competent in crossing the road safely, with a light at one end. There are a couple of primary schools in the neighborhood with limited sidewalks that could better use the camera.

Germany, where they got no speed limits on the highways, got less road casualties per capita. Speed doesn’t kill, bad drivers - do. We need better driver’s education, not stupid speed limits and stupid speed cameras.

But it’s easier to put cameras everywhere, collect fines and tell clueless people that they care.

Not sure about now, but Germany used to have cameras at the Autobahn off ramps.

OK, have you ever driven in Germany?
Yes, the AutoBahns *DO* have speed limits over vast portions. The cities have an absolutely ASTONISHING amount of speed cameras. They don't just take pics of the rear of the car, like they do here - they take the front pics, so the driver can be readily identified and, last time I drove there, points were applied to the drivers' licenses.
