Oprah can't afford a $38,000 purse.

I might for sure but I'm not one of the biggest spokespersons on earth for charity and then do something like that. Seems contradictory. Better term?

Oprah can spend a million on a purse for all I care, it's her money and she earned it. But going to the media about her feelings getting hurt by a shopgirl selling purses that cost more than my car earns no reward points.

Well, lots of celebrities who make multi-million dollars a year are part of some sort of charity. Thing is, they can afford BOTH their luxuries AND their charities. I don't think charity work is just about the money. I'm not defending Oprah specifically but I would be inclined to say that charity work comes from the spirit of giving. Not giving everything YOU have, but just giving what you can. She likely asks people to donate for the good of social welfare, but she's allowed to indulge for herself as we all do.

I'm sure none of us can fathom $77 million dollars of annual income, but you know, kids in the third world probably can't fathom that we make $25 - $70k a year average. We can afford a lot of things they can't. But WE still indulge. There is just more middle class people in the world to judge you for what you do. If you're rich (part of the 1 percent), the entire world judges you.

I agree. I could have been a race thing, but definitely no need for their country to apologize to Oprah. I think both sides released statements about how misconstrued the entire situation was. Definitely not worth the new headlines if you ask me. However, talks about money always brings out the ugly in people because everyone always wants more.

Thank the media. This and Rob Ford making it to taste of the danforth is headline news!

Does anyone buy a $38000 purse out of need?
No it's a luxury item, a collectors item, a status item.

It's not for necessity, it's for luxury.

Stupidity is an opinion. You might do things that others think are stupid LOL Do we all NEED customized bikes that do more than just get us from point A to B? No, but we want to anyway. And if you can afford to, why not? Why don't we all sell our bikes and donate to charity!?

I agree with the above statement but am still troubled by the idea. Thing is, we're mostly not isolated from the world around us. Certainly a talking mouthpiece like the inflated O isn't. Technically she should be able to do with her money as she wishes but wishing to do that might speak to her disconnect from reality.

Gambling is also a luxury. You could drop $200 at the casino yet walk by a guy begging for food. Technically you don't owe him squat. The fact that you feel nothing for the beggers' plight has to be a little bit sad.

Even if that was true, it's the SA's job to sell or show you what you want to see. Discrimination or not, the sales person was unprofessional (keep their opinion to themselves).

Agreed, but to turn that around and fire the "racist" flare up is bullcrap!

It just puts emphasis on a certain group of people and how quickly they throw the racist card up and blow the whistle.

"we're firing you cuz you havent come to work on time in 3 months" YOU'RE RACIST!

"That purse? This one is just as good and half the price, and i'm lazy to get it" YOU'RE RACIST!

Society is coming to a breaking point where Blacks have cried wolf so many times about racism that "eeeeh i dont give a **** anymore....", apathy is setting in, which is wrong IMO because when real cases of racism do pop up, they dont get the attention and response needed, being lost in the static of BS racism calls.

Oprah Winfrey says she's "sorry" that a media frenzy emerged after saying she experienced racism during a trip to Switzerland.
"I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I'm really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland," Winfrey said Monday night at the Los Angeles premiere of Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
"I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don't expect that you would be able to be there," she continued.
In recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Winfrey recalled a clerk at an upscale Zurich boutique refusing to show her a handbag. Winfrey said she was told she could not afford the $38,000 US purse.
"I'm in a store and the person doesn't obviously know that I carry the black card and so they make an assessment based upon the way I look and who I am," said Winfrey, who earned $77 million in the year ending in June, according to Forbes magazine.
"I didn't have anything that said 'I have money.' I wasn't wearing a diamond stud. I didn't have a pocketbook. I didn't wear Louboutin shoes. I didn't have anything," said Winfrey on the red carpet. "You should be able to go in a store looking like whatever you look like and say, 'I'd like to see this.' That didn't happen."
Swiss tourism officials and the boutique owner apologized for the incident last week, but Winfrey insists there's no need. "It's not an indictment against the country or even that store," she continued.
"It was just one person who didn't want to offer me the opportunity to see the bag. So no apologies necessary from the country of Switzerland. If somebody makes a mistake in the United States do we apologize in front of the whole country? No!"

I hope this doesn't read poorly, but most celebrities and uber-rich people that have charities or donate heavily to charities, do so because charitable organizations are tax shelters - its a strategic way for them to appear thoughtful and caring. That's not to say that they don't want to give, but there are incentives and money-earning strategies at play there as well.

I agree that this could be a reason for charity work, but I try not to sweep a group of people under the same rug as a few bad apples. =)
