It's generally about a motorcycle plate.
I believe the staff asks the system for a random plate for you; one is automatically assigned and registered. Doing it a second time requires another fee.

No moving goal posts - Service Ontario outlets are independent contractors.
If you get some pusillanamous peckerhead behind the counter who refuses to give you a different plate and you need it right now would you pay the extra $60 ?
Just asking , you know, for a friend...
Maybe a point.I read the whole story , and yes it’s unfortunate. I also read vanity plates have been issued the possibly should not have with Punjabi and urdu wording that nobody at service Ontario understood. How the heck should service Ont staff be fluent in a multitude of foreign language?
So unfortunate that this fellow , with a middle eastern background got an Isis licence plate, but after being accosted several times as per the article , he could have solved this for $59 dollars .
If I got a plate that said , PAWG ( phat ass white girl ) , and I could fix that for $59 before some dude invited me to a sleazy motel, I’d get on that .

Because we got people from all over the world here speaking any language you can imagine.Maybe a point.
On the other hand:
Every free-to-play, online, mobile, candy crush, etc, game can have a script that automatically denies any name that's deemed inappropriate (OR any perceivable combination)
Why can't the SO plate issuing system do the same?
No but I'm not as fast or as smart as an AI algorithmBecause we got people from all over the world here speaking any language you can imagine.
Do you see any issues with plate CEKC-690, for example?
I believe they do have something in place, you would have to be very careful how you instructed the AI or it would just ban everything. No but I'm not as fast or as smart as an AI algorithm
They didn't force him to keep the plate, they wouldn't give him an alternate for free. Pay the $59, keep the isis plate so it can't be issued to someone else.First sentence:
"An Ontario man who fled Afghanistan amid the threat of a militant takeover says his life was endangered multiple times because of a licence plate resembling the word ISIS that he never asked for and that the province refused to change until he was nearly killed."
Maybe read the whole story and not just the headline ?
I have that plate, you can't have it!A55 H0LE
SO doesn't normally give a crap which plate you take (within reason, don't waste too much time). I think the problem with this person was dealership got a plate so there was no free mechanism to switch it out. You need to pay to get another number.I've recently got 2 new plates. The clerk had a stack of them behind her, and reached for the one on top. I asked if I could pick a different one from within the pile both times. "No problem. Pick one you like."
My Dad was pretty happy when they gave him this one, way back.

Sometimes it hard as hell to understand. Sometimes it’s easy.Remember the game show about reading license plates? I am terrible at reading plates!
I dont think so. They wont even replace all the peeling B series plates for Free. Only a limited subset have a long warranty, the rest have something like a year and after that, cops will give you a ticket for a bad plate but you have to pay for SO to give you a new one. What if his plate got “vandalized” and became unuseable. Would SO replace it for free or a nominal fee lower than $60 ?
