Olympics

... and a lot of Olympic athletes have dedicated years of their lives to get to the 2021 Olympics.

There is a lot more to the Olympics than the games.
There is whole cycle of lead up tournaments and qualifiers. You had to START your journey to the 2021 games in 2017, at the latest.
If they delayed the games, ALL those tournies would be thrown out of sequence as well as screwing the athletes that are ready to go NOW, that quite possibly would find it impossible to compete a year from now.
If they cancelled the games, there would be a whole bunch of athletes that just wasted their lives getting there.

They did delay them. By a whole year. The weather would be far better in October to allow much better performance from the athletes. Ratings are highest if Olympics are in July/August (less competition from league sports). Therefore, the olympics happen in July/August regardless of any pandemic/effect on athletes.

Adding to this: most of them have a full time job that doesn't involve Olympics.

I am barely hitting a 1000lb dead + squat + bench total. A person at my weight in the Olympics is doing 1000lb totals....doing clean and jerks + snatch in two reps. That's one less rep, and two movements that are far harder than the 3 exercises most powerlifters do.

I'm glad they hosted it to give the athlete's a purpose for their hardwork.

While I understand both sides of the argument: my heart/emotions will side with the athletes always, and that's the stronger side for me.

Some of my random thoughts....
  • I have seen a few athletes in this one that are heavier than expected. Not talking obese but it looks like the COVID 15 lbs has hit some of them as well. Sports that are not totally endurance based of course.
  • They have limits to delay, some are touched on but it is not just money. Many of these sports have events year around or other parts of the year and they time frame needs to work around this and with the sanctioning bodies. That or there may be sports where none of the top show up because it overlaps....
  • I do agree October would have been better but see the point above.
  • Japan has already sunk the money, nt having them is a bigger loss than having them at a loss....
  • France beat the USA in basketball, it was a great game (real deal not exhibition).
  • They talk about Japan's COVID numbers but overall they do not look all that bad compared to other countries (so far).
  • They have way to many sports these days and maybe this all needs to be scaled back.
  • Finally me usual swimming rant, why all the different strokes, there isn't a 100m silly walk or backwards run in T&F.....

Money on both fronts. Tons of grass roots money in pools and coaching in many countries. Track running has normal, hurdles, racewalk, steeplechase . . .

If the IOC wanted to be about sport and not money, return to Greece. Every four years, everybody goes to the birthplace of the olympics and competes. That would remove the constant cycle of graft and waste that comes from politicians jizzing into IOC hands for their oppotunity for a legacy boondoggle/unlimited waste for a cause. You could build venues once and actually reuse them instead of abandoning them. Obvious winter olympics would need a different home but could follow the same program.

There are Olympics going on? Hmm, news to me. I thought the media has deemed the life and times, and what Kim Kardashian is having for dinner more important.

I sort of agree, but the Olympics has been corrupt and not about sport for so long that I think athletes competing now should have had different goals. Sure, try to be the best in the world but for most sports, I do not think the olympics are the correct venue to test that. They are just a huge wank fest run by a bunch of rich greedy sob's and I think they should have imploded long ago. For many sports, your odds of winning are reasonably correlated with the size of the sponsors you have. The concept is awesome, the execution in my lifetime (and longer) has been appalling.
What else would you expect from a federation controlled and run by Europeans?

These days it’s Swiss.

I like watching ski jump wipeouts in the Winter Olympics. What’s the equivalent sport in the Summer ones? Surfing?

Also what’s this years useless sport? A few Olympics ago it was ten pin bowling although synchronized swimming is always fun.
Skateboarding?

When do they hand out the medals for bio-chemistry?

I want a third olympics….juice up as much as your body can handle. No hiding, no lying….just straight up put as much roids or whatever you can handle and see the difference from ‘clean’ athletes.

@GreyGhost i heard on the radio recently that Melbourne was selected as the host of 203X Olympic a as a single contender. Maybe they’re removing the hassle and cost of cities bidding against one another. I hope Toronto never gets the games.

Doubt it. Some politicians are wising up that they can transfer billions to their friends without needing to give more than a billion to dick pounder as a facilitator.

It was brisbane, not melbourne. Still stupid. I am looking forward to an olympics where no city in the world is dumb enough to play along.

"A bunch of mayors wanted better trains, so they won Brisbane the 2032 Olympics"
"We don't want it to be a cheap games — we want a legacy that fits our community."

New events for the Aussies. An iron man competition with sharks in the water. Crocodile wrestling. Boomerang toss.

Agree. I have no problems with their conversion. I have problems with them competing when they are likely carrying a significant advantage. Also, by allowing this to happen, there is very little to stop someone from identifying as a woman to crush the competition. I haven't read the details, but normally surgery is not required to update gender so after they became olympic champion, they could stop messing with their hormones and return to male. Sketchy as.
Because anything you just wrote is in any way accurate or possible at all and not just your opinion. Good thing you brought that up! Look at all the instances where that has happened!

Wherever there is competition and loopholes in the rules that can be exploited, they get exploited. Maybe not at at the first opportunity, but it happens soon enough. Rule change was in 2015. They had brazil in 2016 which gave no time to exploit and now the first trans women are competing in Japan. If they crush the competition, I expect a flood. I don't expect most to exploit it. One to three from the world in each sport should entirely destroy the competition.

In some sports it may be possible to game the selection process, if you're rich and reasonably talented.
The idea is to go to way more tournaments than other competitors and gather more points towards selection.
