Kawis are baller status with a little oil level window instead of a dip stick...

Yea its a easy fix, ride the bike, get the oil up to full operating temp and the moisture will boil off. The moisture is a sign of a engine that has been stated and shut off mutlible times and not aloud to get up to full temp.

makes sense. I'm all for quitting my job and riding more

I know this particular issue has pretty much been beaten to a pulp, but I'm curious about a couple of the replies...admittedly most of my back-yard mechanic knowledge is automotive, but don't most manufacturers try to put an oil drain plug at the lowest point in the system? Saying that a half liter more could be expected because the pan was removed sort of implies that a half liter of dirty old oil will be left in the pan every time you do a normal pull-the-plug-and-let-'er-drain oil change? Doesn't seem right.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say some of the oil also clings to the oil pan, so when u remove it, so does the oil.

If u tear down an engine, its gonna use more oil cuz you're wiping them off when you remove parts.

This holds true for cars as well - while the drain plug is at the lowest point, gravity alone will not remove all oil from the system. There will still be oil held in the oil pump, the cylinder head, oil cooler (if present) - plus oil will stick to most surfaces. If you add up the surface area of all the parts inside a motor, it holds a non-trivial amount of oil.

Then you get into funkier designs like the oil pan of my ZX11. It has more than one drain plug, as there are seperate "wells" in the pan. Some people don't realize there are two and leave a lot of oil in the bike!

If you look closely at the picture I posted, beside the window there is 3 different oil capacity specs 1 without filter removed, one with filter removed, and completely dry. Completely dry would be like you said after a tear down...
