Noob Question about downshifting

Under what circumstances are you "disengaged" in 6th? Why would you ever be coasting in 6th?

For the sake of the experiment. But sometimes I can't figure if I'm on fifth or sixth and I try to upshift, then turns out I'm already on sixth. That's a "circumstance" ?

That is just your opinion dude. I don't try to pull a power slide on my Ninja 250. I skid responsively, all on straight ups.
That's like saying. I don't try to pull a power wheelie on my Ninja 250. I wheelie responsively, all on straight ups.Good luck trying to sell either of those arguements in court.

I thought you were saying you frequently locked the rear wheel in 6th. With more experience, you will be able to tell by the relationship between RPM & speed that you are already in top gear, this will avoid those times when you are searching for 7th.

Never said that. I said "maybe temp will go enough and I will be able to do it even on 6th"

About the relationship between RPM and speed..... that is like a 10 variable equation I think. One day I ride 60km/hr at 4,200ish, the other 6,000. I think the temperature/density of the air in the combustion makes the biggest difference ? But again as you said, with more experience, one day I will figure the other 9 variables.

No, it's not. When you learn your bike, you learn the relationship between your speed and RPM. You'll know what gear you're simply by comparing your speedometer and tachometer.

At this point I call WUM.

You seem to be sarcastic, I was not being sarcastic. There are only 2 variables to become familiar with to avoid your miss-shifting problem you described "trying to shift to 7th"Speed & RPM are the only 2 variables you need to familiarize yourself with while in 6th gear. Once you know the few common speeds you typically travel at, a quick glance at the guages will tell you if you are already in 6th or not. And soon after that, you will just hear it and know. All in due time.

wow i go away and miss all the fun lol..... OP BEWARE some of the advice given to you is going to cost you a big OUCH ….. feel your bike listen to your bike and it well all fall into place quickly

But I did give the example of >>>>>> "One day I ride 60km/hr at 4,200ish, the other 6,000."

That is what confuses me, or makes me doubt altho I count the gears sometimes.

the day you're riding at 60km/h at 4200, you're in 6th gear, when you're at 6000rpm, you're in 5th.

You mean to say that in the same gear, on day 60 kph is 4200rpm and another day, same speed/gear is 6000rpm?If so, I'd say you have either the worlds most non repeatable speedo, or most non repeatable tach. You can confirm or eliminate the speedo by riding with a GPS and confirm that the speedo is consistently off by the same percentage.

What reciprocity said. If you're riding at the same speed but at a different RPM, then you're in a different gear.

The fact that you supposedly know your bike well enough to lock the rear wheel "responsibly", yet don't know this is disturbing. Clearly your priorities are out of whack.

Those numbers I gave are really the borders to the 6th gear on my Ninja 250 when travelling at 60km/hr. The average is around 5K +/-100, changing always.

Really ? You guys seemed to be so determined that there must be one RPM reading at a given speed, I'm starting to think ftw is wrong with my bike..................
