No-one needs more than a 600/650 cc bike

I know a guy who rode a Yamaha 80 Toronto to New York city 2up and back in the 70s --- lots of funny stories ! Adventure comes when ya dont have everything you want ...

Back a while ago Honda bench tested a 4 cylinder 250 cc at 250 hp - ( just to see if they could get a HP per CC)
Course it never saw any real use but that was when they were doing those lovely 500 and 750 Fours.

I've always been mid range - 250s, 305s, 400RD ( sweet ) and now the two 650s in either hemisphere. Just fine thankyou.

Rode one of the 750 triple 2 strokes and felt like laundry hanging on the handlebars.

Quite happy to see cost effective choices in 500s and there will be more dual range transmissions letting you be a gas sipper for commuting and quick and agile in the twisties just by shifting ranges.
A litre on a big two up tourer I can see.
1.6 and 1.8 litre???....buy a car.

Let's just kill this line of discussion right here.

The whole argument of "nobody needs x" presumes that the only legitimate reason to own something is that it supports some other socially acceptable (read: boring) requirement. Nobody needs art, sex, music, alcohol, sugar, craftsmanship, service, or beauty - but we are free to have them. Quite possibly because god put us on this earth to make choices to enjoy them.

Somewhere the message got messed up and some people started believing that being whingeing pussies, and feeling bad about things made them better people.

It also presumes that we are obligated to justify ourselves to the sort of person who makes that argument that morally we must "need" the things we are free to have. Next time you are talking to that guy who says nobody needs a powerful bike, ask him who the fu-uck he thinks he is.

It's called freedom.

I'm planning on upgrading to a 600 SS in the next year or so, and at least now I agree with the OP's statement when it comes to SS bikes, when used on the road only. Honestly, my CBR250R does everything perfect up to around 100km/h, and the new Ninja 300R had been out a year ago (and I bought it instead), I might not have been looking to upgrade so soon or at all (although I know eventually I'd want something that could rival a real sports car in terms of performance).

With that said, if we are talking non SS, then yeah, I can definitely see more than 600 due to the hp per cc those bikes tend to put out, not to mention the increased weight.

As for the comment about 'no one needs more than a civic', realistically a 250 would be the civic in that scenario. Using cars again, the 600 SS to 1000 SS (so say CBR600RR vs S1000RR) is more like saying a M3 or even a Porsche 991 is too slow...I need a Gallardo/Veyron. Again, not knocking anyone who does go for the 1000cc SS as everyone has a right to buy whatever they can afford -- I'm simply commenting on the notion someone 'needs' (or rather requires) one.

100% true. :) hell the new BMW hp4 is like what 200 hp and ya , I could convince myself I need one of those , I'll never use the power my r1 makes even on the track, but even when I use 1/4 of it,
Im smiling from ear to ear.

Ride a K1300s and tell me you don't need it :D :D :D

I have...I can't...still tryin to figure out how to afford one. Too many other toys at the moment.
Getting back to OP we don't need more than basic food and water but I still want a nice steak and glass of wine!
Don't need Tv, movies the intern......

I think no-one needs more than a 250, my wifes cbr is all the bike anyone really needs.

However I really want my 1000 and I am keeping it :D:D:D

amen to that

A young kid at my work noticed my bike on my Desktop background.

He told me he was looking at a GSXR750 for his first bike. I told him the GSXR600 would be fine, and he countered with "well when I sit on a GSXR-750 it feels better....cause of my size."

He's not that much larger than me. People just want the bigger/better bike, cause as much as it isn't for some of us....Motorcycles are an "image" thing, and some people out there lack the common sense to make the right informative choice.

I agree with the statement made in the OP's original thread. No one "needs" more than a 600650cc bike.

I regularly say my VFR750 is more than enough

We were talking about this at the bike show. All the old timers, wink wink nudge nudge, started on 50s, 65s, 80s. Hell, a 100 or 125 was your second bike. Now a days lots of people start on 600-1000cc superbikes.

It's because alot of the "riding" these days involve being parked in a lot somewhere.

Funny.....if there was no badging on the bike or colour differences, he couldn't tell the difference between a 600 and a 750......they are dimensionally identical, and weigh within 7 lbs of each other.

A friend of mine who used to race semi pro told me the same thing. Then he sold his 695 and bought an 1199

In the end were all looking for different things out of our bikes. Some want a rush like no other, some want reasonable commuter, some want to see the world, and some want to chill at parking lots and look cool.

Im happy with my 250 and that's more bike than i need...but I want a little more! And when I find that bike I'll probably want a little bit more :)

I got into this sport to try it out and see what it's all about. I thought that like some other hobbies it would come and go and I'd lose interest...but there's so much to learn and try I don't think this is going away anytime soon!
