Nexus One or Nexus S?

Froyo was a huge leap. In my humble opinion, it should almost have been 3.0, not 2.2. I really can't speak to unlocking a motorola phone, as the steps would be different that on the nexus, which was remarkably easy. I'd have a look over at xda-developers, androidforums and at cyanogenmod.com for instructions on doing the install on your phone (whatever it may be). Some very knowledgeable people over at all three.

I honestly don't remember all the updates in froyo, since it's been a bloody long time since I've used any variation of eclair (2.1). Have a look at the froyo keynote speech (should be on youtube) for an explanation and demonstration of all the benefits (and a few nice apple jokes). For me, the addition of the wireless access point is enough on its own to merit the upgrade. That said, if you're going to void the warranty anyway to install froyo, if cyanogenmod is available for your phone, I'd grab the latest stable version of that rather than the stock version.

Thanks Mikey. This is what I found and was thinking of changing to it http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...ur-motorola-droid-rooted-users.html#post12906

I used these instructions http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide and they mostly worked. Did it on a Linux box. Just a couple of notes:
1) The easiest way to install fastboot for me was just following the fastboot portion of the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537508
2) To boot into ClockworkMod, I did "./fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.4-passion.img" every time I needed to get into it
3) After flashing, before rebooting, wipe to factory defaults and wipe the cache AGAIN - prevents google sync issues

1, 2 and 3 will save you hours of headaches

Already having hours of headaches with the phone eh hahaha.... shoulda got the iPhone.

Yeah, it would have been a lot easier to replace the O.S. on that one

FYI, I decided to reflash my phone with another O.S., which sounded like an interesting project. Stock Android worked just fine for me and was easy to get around in. I just prefer a community-maintained open development that is more stable than stock firmware and gets updates a lot sooner. You see, this kinda stuff is allowed and even encouraged by both the manufacturer and the OS developer in the Android ecosystem

Is there an advantage to upgrading to froyo 2.2 from 2.1? Apparently motorola being the ********** they normally aren't going to provide system updates at all. There is a rootkit answer out there so I might try it but it'll void the warranty and might turn the phone into a brick....

So let me see if I've got this straight. If you upgrade a Moto from 2.1 to 2.2, you void the warranty, and if you want change your OS, you have to root (jailbreak) the device (there's that pesky warranty again), yet you say it's allowed, no encouraged by the manufacturers and the developers.

Sounds a lot like doublespeak.

To be fair, his phone manufacturer and mine are different. His manufacturer does encourage it. I don't know about warranty and such for his phone.

Problem is that my manufacturer is a prick that isn't updating the software like other manufacturer. His manufacturer is updating it on a set schedule and there are ways to update it now on your own... i.e. rooting your phone.

My manufacturer's policy is standard with most of other manufacturers where they void warranty if you mess with the OS. The reason they don't want to update is that they are greedy pigs. I probably won't buy another motorola phone after this. It's the second one in my life time and I'm regretting it again... :(

^ you and a million other android users have this exact problem... thats where the 'fragmentation' term was coined.

I just prefer a community-maintained open development that is more stable than stock firmware and gets updates a lot sooner.

Translation: the stock phone isn't stable enough and doesn't get timely updates so I have to hack the crap out of it to make it work like it should in the first place

lol, we all know this conversation is going to go in a circle that has already been done a million times on the interwebz and couple of hundred times on GTAM so I'll pass. You like apple/iphone ... cool, as long as it does what you need that's awesome. I'm not a fan or like it so I'll pass. Each person has it's own preference. I can say similiar stuff about iphone in terms of OS but I'll pass. Don't want to keep going in circles ... even my dog stops doing that after a while.

Please don't translate. The bible, quran, billions of other things have been translated and look what we have to show now. Translation is often just another person's intepretation of how he/she wants to see things or wants them to be for their own needs and most of the translations aren't properly reflective of what they originally were.

Note to Apple Fanboys: This is more of an Android support thread than anything. You're more than welcome to open an Android-bashing thread where we can iron out our differences. Let's keep things on topic in here.

Mikey-D: I found a great package to organize the launchers on my desktop. It's called Apps Organizer and it's downloadable from the market. Instead of having my desktop covered in icons, I have Multimedia, Work, Tools, Communication and Navigation (in addition to 2 contact shortcuts for a couple of family members). You can create custom categories, and check off various packages for each category (or place a package into multiple categories). You can pick from stock icons or use your own (even though I didn't wanna bother with that).
Another interesting tool that I'll probably give a test-drive at some point is File Expert. That one would allow you to browse SMB shares (for access to your NAS), acts as a file manager, can zip/unzip, install packages etc etc etc.
I also see some potential in Funambol It's a client/server combo (works on winblows and Linux) for syncing email, contacts, calendars, tasks and notes. If you wanna be able to sync locally without going through Google's ecosystem, this puppy looks like it has lots of potential. I'll give it a thorough test-drive at some point in time.
All 3 are FLOSS. For a decent list of FLOSS Android packages, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open_source_Android_applications

this thread is confusing me, although im interested to know about it........, earlier i was sweating.

What's confusing about it?

@FS: were you using froyo 2.2 or gingerbread 2.3? I'm interested to know what the major significant changes in 2.3 are. 2.2 has been huge compared to 2.1 from what I read.

My phone was running Froyo.. AFIK, the stable Gingerbread release for N1 isn't out yet, even though it should come out soon. Other than the switch to EXT4, I don't see Gingerbread as a huge improvement, but from what I know, it should have better tablet support, integrated SIP (I don't mind sticking with Linphone anyway), some UI tweaks (including redesigned multitouch) and some power management tweaks. I'll probably wait until they cook up a Gingerbread-based CM release for N1.

You're welcome to ask any questions for clarification. While it was originally about a shopping decision, it turned into a bit of a support/knowledge-sharing thread.

So the OS is open, but none of the phones are.

i know i can go to a real forum about learning android, but this is good enough for now,...i do plan on getting a really good android OS tablet (happy with iphone, ipad), just like having best of both worlds,... i don't have any android device at the moment, really soon though(still enjoying my macbook air),,, CES is gonna be really excited for me, i have jitters for tech.

by just reading i see there is a lot of extra headache to enjoy this OS, not that i would back down from it(its in my DNA) to know.

What android tablet are you thinking of getting? I want to get a tablet next year. I've had the ipad but found it to be too slow when running some apps including the youtube vids. I'm not sure if ipad 2 will be a much of an improvement, but it if it is I will probably consider it. I'm also leaning towards Notion Ink's adam. From what I've read it's a solid performer and specs are mighty good except maybe the Hard drive. Again, my only worry is that it's a newbie company that's still getting a handle on the business side of things.

http://www.notionink.com/

Other than that, I thought about the HP one but didn't go for it ... HP has become too unreliable as of late. Considering the BB because of the QNX OS and hardware specs are strong along with the price, but the size isn't something that'll work out for my course readings. Price on the lower end model is right though.

If you're going to CES definitely check out the adam and let me know what you think.

I would expect the 2nd gen iPad to be a huge improvement.... though I haven't noticed any slowness in the current model. YouTube seems fine to me??

It'll definitely benefit from having more memory and whatever other improvements they make to it.

Definitely agree. I think the first model could've been more powerful, but it was more of a test to see how much they can sell before they brought out a really good one. It definitely explains why apple is pushing to have the 2nd generation out in less than a year of the 1st gen release. If they come out with a significantly more powerful that can compare to the stuff that's out there today ... they'll definitely keep dominating the market.

Again, it could've been me as I try to run a lot of things at the same time. I remember trying to run 720p vids on youtube with no apps running in the background and it was lagging to the point where audio was faster than video. It wasn't a network issue either.

Strange, I found youtube playback to be done exceptionally well, the vids looked great and I think they loaded even faster than they do in Safari on my laptop... then again I never upgraded my iPad to 4.2 (or whatever it is) and thus didn't have multitasking etc..

Regardless, I expect the next one to be a workhorse. My only complaint about 1st gen is the speed at which it renders long webpages and forums... I like instant, but you have to scroll and then wait a fraction of a second. Not a big deal, but its not 100%.
