New rider need advice please

I tried posting but it didn't work so here we go again I will get straight to the point

I had the urge to ride for awhile now. Finally decided this year I will finally do it. Started saving after college semester ended. To my calculations of my wage I would have had enough for the bike I wanted (Honda cbr250r) by end of July.

Well someone close to me got really sick and I needed to visit them. So I used my savings on a plane ticket gonna short day notice over long weekend which cost me a lot.

Now I am back in GTA and am.really short on cash for my bike. So I tried to go finance a 2012 250 CBR at Honda dealership on Dundas and Hensall. well let's say my co signer didn't have good credit and I can't get another one. So here are my options I am left with. Before I tell u those I want to inform u that I need a outlet because I been stressed like crazy for past year.

Option A - scrap this season and save up again through winter and buy a 250cc starter bike and start riding next season or

Option B- buy a CbR125 this season which I have enough for and get the feel for riding and enjoy this season then save up and upgrade next season or

Option C - ( your input)

I am a new rider with no experience riding . loom forward to your advice and this website has helped me greatly :D

I don't know much but I'd but my 0.02 here:

I notice that OP said he wanted an "outlet" cuz of all the stress in life. IMO, don't get a bike because of that. You're just gonna speed and crash and kill yourself or someone.

Also, do you know how to ride a bike? Are you thinking of taking a course? That's gonna set you around another $500 if you're going.

IMHO, save up, and wait till next season. I've personally wanted to ride since 25, and haven't done it until this year (28 now), so it's not a big deal.

In terms of bike, I rode a 125 for my course and now I have a 250 ninja, I'd say there's a big difference in riding, and personally enjoy the 250 a lot more.

Also, judging from the way you describe your financial situation, please do note that a motorcycle is very different from a car, where there's a lot more maintenance, and along with that, more spending... Are you ready for that?

Otherwise, there's a lot of 250 out there for around $2500-$3000.... I'm sure there's one that you'd like

Didn't mention that the price tag I mention is second hand private seller bikes...

Haha no I will not speed and crash and yes I do plan on taking course regardless if I get bike this season or not and yes I am ready form the up keep . I have out alot of studying and researching before I even thought about getting my M1 let alone a bike. And yes I know bikes require more maintence. And for the stress part by that I ment I need a hobby to get out of the house and stop thinking by petty things and just focus on one thing. Riding . and yes I researched all about the 250s this is why I wanted to get that from. The start as my starter bike

So what is your reason why I should wait till next season? Cbr125 not worth riding for remainder of season?

Then it sounds like you have a plan of how you want things done then, and just needs reassurance? At any rates have in riding, and hope you get your dream bike soon!!

Well like I said I had a lil problem in my finanical situation. I can afford to maintain and buy a used 125cc I just want to know if its worth it for rest of this season or should I just save up for my 250 next season

Re: New rider need advice plz

have you shopped for insurance yet? If your struggling financially to buy a bike (I'll assume your younger), you might be in for a surprise when you look at insurance. If you've already done that, consider taking the course this year to see if you even like riding. Wait on buying the bike until the fall or next year. IMO a 125 is hazardous in GTA traffic, you simply do not have the option to use the gas quick to get out of a potentially ugly situation should it arise. You also do not want to be close to the edge financially with a bike. What happens if you get a flat tire, can you drop $200-$250 in an instant to get it replaced?

Re: New rider need advice plz

I don't agree with the comment that a 125 is hazardous in GTA traffic. OP, you would definitely get more use out of the 250 (you'd outgrow the 125 sooner than a 250) so I would personally wait until you can get the 250. Check on insurance first, of course. Riding a bike is definitely an expensive habit. Have you already bought your gear? That's another pricy investment. If you want to ride this season, grab a 125 if that's what you want to do, and I could come help you out if you want me to show you the basics. If you can hold off the passion until next season, get the 250 and again, if you need assistance, let me know.

EDIT: You should definitely take the course because you will learn a lot but I could show you the basics so you don't go into the course completely new.

Agreed with all of the above. Mostly 125 won't give you a lot of power. I just did my m2 test today with a 125 provided by the school, and when I compared it to my 250... Lets just say I won't take it out on the road cuz my life depends on it.

And please do mind all the expense mentioned: gear, insurance, maintenance, winter storage/maintenance, etc. it really stacks up quickly.

What I did, and along with everyone else's recommendation: don't worry about getting bike now. Since u never rode before, take the course, and see how you feel first. THEN decide if you really want a bike. Despite the fact that you "really want to ride now", you shouldn't be so assured of yourself until you actually get on one.

Re: New rider need advice plz

thanks for all the advice guys.

i want to explain something im not broke like i cant get money. its just i had the money saved up for everything was couple weeks away from getting my bike but something happened and i had to spend most of it (emergency issues with fam). i have enough for the expenses that came with the bike at that point . just now i would have to wait to save again for a 250. but have jsut enough for a 125cc and gear and insurance thats why i was asking.
but anyway great advice Axian_rider

and Sykobish i would like some help learning the basics once i get my bike, i live in brampton area for now.

i think i will take the class first and make my decision after. im sure i will ride a 125cc in the class so that might help with my decision.

and Smergy yes like i said before i took all costs in account before i even thought about gettin my M1
but thanks for the advice

around when does the riding season end? this might help also with my decision on saving

Oh and I'm sure you've got this point already, but highly recommend not to get a new bike as your first. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I've dropped mine on the first day I got it... Good thing it was used, else I'd feel terrible for myself ><

It is different for different people, my season ends in November/December but it really starts to get uncomfortable mid to end of November. I did not have heated grips but I used snowmobile gloves, an extra sweater, and long johns for ~5 degrees, that was for the first two years. The third, I just won't ride if it is below 10 degrees so my seasons will start to get shorter. It is really up to you.

I bought my first bike new. I don't want to buy other people's problems, especially being new but then again, it's different for every individual. I have a loaner bike (very great friends) until I get my new 500 next season. At least if you drop your new bike, it's character and memories. ;) To each their own.

Whenever you're ready, I can come to you and help you out. If you take the course before getting your bike, you will learn what you need to in the course, but I would be up for helping you after the fact to sharpen up what you've learnt.

EDIT: Also, if you take your course through Learning Curves, let me know where and when you are doing your course and if it's at the location in DT Toronto, I could stop by and say hi. =)

Axian_rider I planned on buying used private seller. But its a little intimadating like sykobish said I don't wanna buy from private seller then inheirate the other persons problems. Maybe I will find someone knowledge able to come with me when I purchase.

MadPoet thanks for advice that really helps because now I think If I save up till end of September I will be in range for 250

Sounds good. I would be happy to help. Let me know when you're ready and I can come to you.

Re: New rider need advice plz

if your short on cash just buy an older 600 or 750cc gsxr.
many people learn to ride on 750's or 1000. as long as you dont twist the wrist there should be no problem. as well as older bikes dont have the super sport insurance hike with them

Re: New rider need advice plz

Buy a 125 it is fun to ride and next season u can sell it and get a 250. cbr 125 maintenance isnt that bad. Take the course for sure. I was in the same situation couldnt afford the cbr 250 so i got my m1 and took the course and i bought a 125 rode it for one season and sold it for the same price i got it so didnt lose money and insurance for 125 and 250 not much difference. Now i ride a 250 and i like it but the 125 is awesome and i miss it sometimes because it was fun to handle and it def isnt hazardous in gta i rode it everywhere and it was great!! Get the 125 get good experience on it this season and then move up next season.
