Need to sell, what do I need to know

To the op, don't forget to flirt. That should get you your asking price!

But yeah don't get anything (ie. uvip or safety) until a deposit is left as these will take only an hour or 2 to obtain. Also wait until at least mid march when the price of bikes go up.

Wrong again

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/used.shtml#selling

"Remember: Under Ontario law, private sellers of most motor vehicles must buy and show potential buyers the Used Vehicle Information Package."

"Sellers must:
  1. Buy this package if you are selling a used vehicle privately in Ontario
  2. Show it to all prospective buyers
  3. Give it to the buyer when you sell your vehicle."

Interesting. Apologies, I stand corrected. I haven't seen that before. Thanks.

I'm curious how the law behind the UVIP is enforceable. I'm negotiating for a bike currently and the seller will see me half way if I buy the UVIP.

Femme, if you're looking for a quick, no hassle sale, a dealership may be your best bet. You won't get the best price though.

kijiji is my favourite place to browse for bikes although I find prices are usually a bit high. Expect people to lowball you. My approach would be to advertise at a decent price upfront, sell the bike with valid safety certificate and UVIP, and be fairly firm on the price. If you have extras (cover, luggage, etc.) you can throw in to sweeten the deal, give that a shot.

A safety is fairly simple but must be done by a certified mechanic. You can read the requirements here: http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/regs/english/elaws_regs_900611_e.htm#BK13 (Schedule 6) to get an idea if your bikes would pass without any repairs.

All the hassle over 20 bucks?? If you really like the bike and the price is acceptable, then why not get the UVIP lol.

The seller is supposed to supply the UVIP, but they rarely do. I have bought and sold bikes without the seller supplying it. When Ive bought I just get it myself before going to look at the bike, asking for the VIN before I set up a meeting time. So no you dont "NEED" to get it, but its a good idea as it can simplify things for the both of you...

And Ive also bought and sold without a safety, again its rare for the seller to include a safety...And I wouldnt buy that either because as far as I can remember its only valid for 36 days. So if you dont end up selling the bike before it expires its useless and you wasted $60-80

I want everything for nothing. There I said it. Now I can die in peace.

No really, the bike's got one glaring flaw so I was hoping to get a great deal, it being winter and all. Head over to the romper room, I posted a thread there.

sheesh. The UVIP is "supposed" to be supplied by the seller, but anyone can get it. It is required at time of ownership transfer at the MTO. Since the UVIP came into use, every bike I've bought came with the UVIP, but almost every bike I've sold, the buyer got it themselves ahead of time.

Safety is good only for 36 days. Negotiate it into your deal if you feel like it. Most bikes I've bought never came with the safety (I know what to check for) and I got it done myself after. About half the bikes I've sold had safetys done.

I always have a copy of the UVIP to show buyers. Its easier that way, especially for buyers who don't even know what a UVIP is. Showing them the documentation and that there are no liens often eases the sale. I also generally offer to have a safety done for them if they don't try to knock the price down... but if they're negotiating, the safety is the first thing to go off the table.

Some people would need to take time off work which may not be an option. Not all MoT offices are open longer one/two days a week and/or Saturdays.

Can't you still get a UVIP at one of those MTO-kiosk thingies?

I bought a bike without UVIP and found out at the MTO office that it had a lien on it. The owner paid it off but if he didn't the bank could have taken my bike. So no, I will not buy a bike without UVIP ever again.

You can order the UVIP online and they will mail it to you.

Ok so I've listed both my bikes on craigslist. I tried kijiji and they keep taking it down saying that the listing was against their policies???? Anyway sent and email ti kijiji still haven't heard back.

Anyway, my question to you all is what do I have to be wary of? I've had two inquiries from really strange email addresses (one was sjhgsgdjhgdjh@email.com) which seem fake. Now I know the SS bikes have a tendency to get stolen especially at this time of year. Is this something I need to be careful of? When people want to see the bike, should I ride it somewhere to meet them? I'm not sure I want to let people know where I live if there motive is to steal the bikes

Any feedback and suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Did you list the bikes on this forum too?

The e-mail address is weird, but as long as the person is local and pays in cash or bank draft, I'd say weird e-mail address is their problem. Obviously disregard all offers to ship the bike, especially to Nigeria :).

I've never had problems listing my stuff on Kijiji. Did they state a reason why your ad was pulled? Are you posting any external links or naked pictures in your ad???

kijiji, autotrader and gtam for selling the bike, all are free and a well written informative description will go a long way...as for uvip, those are valid for a year i believe (but do your homework), it's the safety that is only good for 30 days. i just sold a vehicle lately and all i did was have the uvip ($20) on hand and emailed it over to someone if they asked, as well as extra pics and offer to take more if so desired, as well as a service record history (albeit this one i would only supply upon deposit), i would supply the vin if they wanted since they would use that to check with their insurance company...in the ad you can put safetied upon sale...you can write conditions on the deposit for the safety to keep the other party happy. you'll get the usual scammers, in my ads i just put, "only sold in person, no paypal and won't ship, cash or cashiers cheque" but this is totally up to you...if i were selling my bike, i'm of the "no test rides" school, they can watch me run it up and down the street or follow me in or on their vehicle, but that's up to you...good luck...

this is what they said

Dear Kijiji User,

We have just deleted one of your Kijiji Ads for violating one or more site policies.

When you get a reply, make sure it contains some reference that is specific to your ad, like model or relevant questions. Otherwise, it is likely just an automated response from people scanning all ads hoping for responses from unwitting people. I ignore stupid replies like "Is it still available?" or when they guy doesn't give his name. Also people who open with "what's your best price?" aren't seriously interested, they're just looking for a steal.

And yes, try and meet in a neutral location if possible, especially if the person sounds a little weird. But sometimes that can be hard so use your judgement. Also, don't leave them with the key. If they want to so much as sit on the bike and rev it then ask them for their DL and keep it until they are done. Or better yet, ask for a 100% deposit. If they want to test ride then the 100% deposit is mandatory.

Thank you. That's exactly what I am getting....just requests to see "if the ad is still available" nothing specific.

Also thanks for suggesting keeping the DL should they decide they want to sit on it and rev the engine.

Don't meet at your house (if you can avoid it) but be sure you take someone with you when you do go to meet a potential buyer.
Don't meet someone at their suggested location.
Don't drive/ride far to show someone the bike. If they can't be bothered to come and look then they're not serious.
Get a name and telephone number before you go out to meet someone. Not 100% but helps filter out the scammers.
Don't let them test drive the bike. Unless you have the full asking price, in cash, in your hands and the money is securely tucked away.
Don't let them sit on it and rev it. Nothing is gained. Everything is lost if they drop the bike and walk away.
Ride the bike up and down the lot to show them everything works.
Get the UVIP. If only because it makes you a better seller.
Get a safety if you want. It'll help, but wont stop lowballers and timewasters.
Be prepared to filter out the scammers on kijiji. Anyone who doesn't want to come see the bike is full of BS.
If they want to pay by bank draft then go to the bank with them to have the draft made up. Then while you're there tell them they may as well get the cash.
If someone is coming around with the cash then make sure someone else is with you so they can take the cash away right away to a) check it for fake bills and b) lock it away so the "buyer" can't reclaim the cash at the end of a baesball bat.
Public parking lots in daytime hours are the best meet spots. Somewhere with a difficult entry/exit route is better. A crowded Timmies is a good place.
If you take a deposit make it 100% clear that it is NON refundable under any circumstances.

Just be smart. If anything smells a bit fishy then back away. It feels horrible to be putting a potential buyer off. It feels worse seeing your precious bike disappearing for free.
