need advice on a 20K+ used bike?

Re: need advice on a 20K+ Km used bike

Read the "How to buy a used bike" thread already

but wanted to hear/read some of my fellow GTAM members opinion on this bike...

in short

Kawasaki 2005 ZX-6R (636cc) with 23,141km for $5,995

-Are bikes with 23K+ gonna cause/cost me problems?
-How reliable is the 636 platform from 2005?
-Is the Price of the bike match the Km?

Thanks to all those who respond

At 24K you're gonna need to do valves $300-400 right there
Most likely brake pads will be shot at this point thats another $100 for parts and whatever for labour
My guess is brake fluid probably will need to be done as well, change the coolant. Air filter, plugs etc...

On a good day you're looking to spend 1000$ to get the thing up to speed, or $2k plus in the worst case scenario if we add in tires and other possibilities.

You're now in the 7-8 range. For that kind of money go get yourself a 2010 gsxr or similar. The bike is a couple years old and you won't need to do any of the maintenance any time soon.

Something like this http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...s-2010-GSX-R600-White-blue-W0QQAdIdZ417250859

I've bought many bikes over the years and when you try to save money on older bikes it usually ends up biting you in the *** and you spend more in the end.

Get a used bike from the US, you'll save some serious cash. Search on cycletrader.com and http://www.searchcraigslist.org/
Look at bikes in Ohio, PA, NY which are fairly close drives.

Yup you'll save big time.
Now factor in the cost of going there, bringing it over, duties, inspections etc

By the time you're done the amount you saved will be almost nothing, now factor in the hit your bike will take when its time to resell it and your time to do all this.

Well when I checked the valves on my 04 zx10 at 23,000km or so, they were ALL out of spec, not a lot but enough that they all got adjusted. Sounds like you guys need new "mechanics", wait till you need a new head or drop a valve and bring it in then, sounds logical. It takes probably 3hr to check them, and they're under the valve cover so the bike only gets torn into a 32nd not 1/2 lol.
Yep, I had a valve snap and it was a lot of $$$$$. Better be safe than sorry. You don't know when the previous owner adjusted them. Maybe they even adjusted them early and it was adjusted wrong (as was the case with my bike).

Oh and 22K is NOTHING. ALso, I'm pretty sure that state farm classes everyhing from about 601cc to 800 or so CC the same so keep in mind that insurance on the 636 is going to cost about the same as a GSXR-750 so if you're trying to get the most "bang for your buck" insurance wise as a ratio to HP, you might wanna go with the 750 instead.

Tires? really? most sport tires last like 6K km. You're just as likely to have to change tires on a 2010 with 8K on it as a 2005 with 22K on it. Coolant? I've done like 3-4 coollant changes already on my bike and I'm only at like 22K myself. A jug of coolant is also only like a few bucks too, big deal. I've also changed my brake pads at under 20K. My bike has brake pads that are better than stock and have way more life in them than again, a 2010 with 8K on it would have. The valve adjustment I agree with but everything else needs to be looked at on a case by case basis.

I agree but which bike you think will need more work? A 2005 or 2010? Fork seals anyone? lol Sprockets/chain?

Re: need advice on a 20K+ Km used bike

all very valid and even some very technical advice, thanks for the great pointers guys

I was really looking forward to the 2013 ZX 636 but can't justify spending $13+ k and insurance

yep, statefarm places the 636, 675 and 750 all in the same category.

If you do get it, do the 'jumper mod'. it takes 30 seconds to do and is dyno proven to give the bike an extra 7-8hp. puts you ahead of even the newer 600s

I did just that, in 2010 April, I bought a used 2007 SV650 for $4000 in PA,US + all other costs it came to around $5000. Put another 10,000kms on it during the riding season then sold it in Sep. for $5500. How's that a bad deal?

Just brought over 2 days ago clean 2008 Honda CBR600RR with 2500km on it.
Picked it up for $6000 US cash. With all taxes, fees, safety's, gas, DMV, it came up to ~$7150

Now tell me, how is that not a saving?

That's not saving. $7150 for a 2008 600RR?

I picked up my 2006 675 Daytona three years ago for $7K in Canada so it was a year older than your CBR.

We should also compare 2007 Harley sportster 1200 vs my bike.........cause they are the "same bikes"

Check kijiji for GTA area for 2008 cbr's. Also check their mileage.
let me know if you'll find one with 2500km.

Re: need advice on a 20K+ Km used bike

the green one looks great but on closer inspection the engine cover on the right has a gash on it ( been dropped ) only to have new fairings which makes it look so inticing

Re: need advice on a 20K+ Km used bike

Doh, someone may have looked at this thread and bought the bike in your moment of contemplation.

Yup, and then you snapped a valve on it? Maybe there was a reason why it was so cheap. LOL

One thing that wasn't mentioned by anyone yet is that the blue ZX6R looks to be lowered quite a bit compared to the green one highway posted.

Isn't lowering a bike bad for handling?

Not really much of a deal, check this one out. No border crossing, paperwork...

http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...-bikes-HONDA-CBR600rr-2008-W0QQAdIdZ393620976

don't forget that when you want to sell your USA acquired bike no one will want to touch it, and when they do it will be for a discounted price.

i never heard lowering is bad for bike, , but does suggest guy that rode it liked his hairpins ! or he was realy short! lol
