Need a premium used car for 10-15K. BMW, Audi, Subaru, Chevrolet???

Considering I need to get my firewall repaired as part of a normal problem on my car, I wouldn't call Subarus all that reliable, either. And yes, mine is a 2009 and has a couple rust spots on the front fenders and the seat mount was rusted a bunch even when I bought it. My VW was rust free when it was 9 years old except in one spot on the fender that the dealer was going to fix for free.

Ops there is no 24V. only 12V and 30V.

Wikipedia:
A wide range of internal combustion engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9 litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp), although Audi's 2.8 litre V6 engine, carried over from the old 80/90 was the only engine option in North America until 1997.

A refreshed B5 A4 range appeared at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, with sales beginning in Europe in early 1998. The 2.8 litre 30-valve V6 engine replaced the 2.8 litre 12-valve.

2.8 V6 12v SOHC 174 PS (128 kW; 172 bhp) 245 N·m (181 lbf·ft) 230 km/h (142.9 mph) 8.2 sec 1994–1997
2.8 V6 30v DOHC 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp) 280 N·m (207 lbf·ft) 240 km/h (149.1 mph) 7.4 sec 1997–2001

So as far as I am concerned the 1995-1997 engine is bomber, since it's the same as my old 90.
Any info on the 30V? What did they screw up on that one?

I am DROOLING, but it's not a daly beater.

I'm preferential to 4 cyl turbos. Easier to work on, less cylinders, plugs, coils, 02 sensors, cats etc. to work, deal with or replace. Plus, you can make some decent power with an ecu flash and bolt-ons on a turbo. If you do decide on another Audi, and all the quirks that go with them, the 4cyl makes it a lot easier to deal with.

P:S

The only thing I absolutely hate, hate hate, triple hate, loath entirely is putting the car into "service mode".

So true. Friend's 2003 Jetta that was new to him in 2008 has no rust yet and hasn't had major repair done to it...ever. Sitting at just over 280k

Just get an Evo ;) mine was pushing out over 400awhp (closer to 500) when I sold it

I do, however, know about 3 people that got rid of them early due to rust issues. Not sure why some seem great while others rust out quickly.

Anyone have a suggestion for the smallest vehicle that has a 400 lb or so tongue weight rating that is also slightly unique? I keep coming back to a Land Rover LR3 or older Discovery but the reliability and repair costs scare me away. Plus they're huge and get terrible mileage. Maybe a Jeep Liberty CRD but I've never loved Jeep.

If I could put one of those hitch mounted motorcycle carriers on my WRX I'd be happy but that would be way over the 200 lbs max recommended. Maybe if I braced something with the roof rack I'd be barely ok since the bike I have weighs 280 lbs plus a 60 lb carrier but that's pretty high over the limit.

Not sure where to point you but I'll say this. I wouldn't drive a liberty if you paid for it and gave it to me. Grand Cherokee diesel yes, no liberty. Other than that I got nothin lol

Sent from my commodore 64 on dial up

City Golf/Jetta - Mexico
Golf/Jetta - Mexico
Wolfsbug Golf/Jetta - Germany

Most of the rust free MkIIIs you see now are either babied/washed+rustproofed regularly or have that funky wolf on a bridge badges on the fenders.

Mine was a Mexican diesel. More than just the Wolfsburgs were made in Germany. Many Golfs are made in the US now.

My mk3 is from Germany and it's not a wolfsburg, it's a vr6 gti. Never seen winter. The floors underneath are sparkling :D
