Need a premium used car for 10-15K. BMW, Audi, Subaru, Chevrolet???

because you don't do timing belts on other cars? Either you find a shop with a decent tech or learn yourself and it's not that bad. Just because the dealership bends you over for it doesn't mean they're hell to do. As for your theory on injectors, how often do you change those? Granted if it happens bmw is on crack for how much they charge. So many people are paranoid because they hear or read things on the internet that happen to a handful. I could give you pages of why not to buy any north american comparable car. Does it mean they're all bad? Probably not.

People hear that because well that IS what happens.
It's the same that people hear that Toyota and Honda's are solid cars.
That happened over time and those companies built a quality product (maybe not today).
Ever hear anything bad about Subaru's?

German car mentality is if you got the money to own one then you got the money to fix one.

my vote is 3 series.

I thought mine was pretty reliable and the support from forums were great for any issues i had (nothing major) and i thought it was very simple to work on, everything made sense

Right now i have a VW jetta, and in the last month everything just started falling apart. 2 wheel bearings, one end link, and an electric steering rack. It was a nightmare to work on.

Im going to sell my jetta for a Japanese car. I bought my jetta because i drive about 100km a day to work and needed something fuel efficient (tdi) but the money i saved on fuel, has gone back into repairs

Really? I've owned 11 watercooled vw/audi's and 2 air cooled cars and not once have I ever experienced any of these huge problems "that happen to every car they make" I currently have a vr6 gti from the 90's that I'm the second owner of and it's 90% original after 175 thousand km's. How many have you owned that you base your opinion on?? Have I heard bad about subaru? Yes, from friends who have had them. I've been working with these cars since 1998 so I do have a little experience with them.

It's not like I own one of these car companies.
Let me ask you this.
How many Toyota's and Honda's win car of the year and best buy and insurance best rated etc...?

It is not uncommon for a Honda or Toyota to hit 300km and still keep going (rust by then is the enemy).

People tend to buy what makes them feel better or presents some level of importance to strangers.
If you drive a 3 series BMW then you are more important than those do do not.
IF you drive a 5 series then they tend to laugh at the 3 series owner telling them to get the man's version.
Then you have the 7 series etc...
And just when you think it's done you get the M versions.

Cars tend to do 1 thing, depreciate.

And she'll look good doing it.

It's only money.

Perception has changed. My bike now is now my biotch & the wife

Just got myself a Civic and I am somewhat disappointed. Their transmissions are ****. The input shaft bearing goes on a lot of them. Seems the problem started in the 90's and it's still a common occurrence on the 8th generation. BHGs are somewhat comon. Lots of other quirks. :(

I agree with you fully. My friends honda is at 420,xxxkms and still going. Granted we've had to swap a motor in it, transmission because they have sh**ty bearings and the body is definitely starting to go. The majority of cars have a stereotype that follow them was all I was trying to get at. Personally I hate his honda. It squeaks, rattles and has since the day he bought it brand new. Doesn't mean they all do. I had a 2008 si that was an awesome car. Sure there are some bad vw's/audi's and even porsches (996 *barf* ) but that doesn't mean never buy one because some were lemons. Every car company has had and still continues to have them (toyota the recall kings) All cars depreciate but in the end if you enjoy/like your car then so be it.

My Jeep Grand Cherokee finally died. Good riddance to 16L/100 Km.

So, I'm considering a small premium sedan for my newly-discovered eclectic tastes. I'll only drive about 10 000 Km a year since it's a secondary vehicle and I have my bike for the riding season. Thinking around spending 10 to 15 k and planning to hit the GTA to purchase by next week, since that's where the majority of vehicles are. There's a plethora of 3-series and A4's for sale on the internet in that price range. Rather not do a private sale so that leaves car dealers and some sort of powertrain warranty. I think the 3's have a timing chain and normal aspiration while the A4 1.8T's are belt and turbo. Any particular strengths and weaknesses in these brands? One over the other? I'll definitely get winter tires, is the X-drive more reliable than Quattro? etc, etc, etc.

It would help greatly if you would post what model year's you are looking at. (i.e. 2005+ only etc.)

Out of curiosity how reliable are Porsches compared to BMW and Audi?

Google "IMS failure" and prepare for a lot of reading ...

Every manufacturer has their strengths and they've all had their duds. Japanese cars are not as perfect as some would like you to believe, nor is every European car a hand grenade with the pin pulled. Honda has had their share of issues with automatic transmissions, particularly when attached to V6 engines, and their hybrid systems have been underwhelming. Toyota has had much-publicized issues, and others that haven't made the news.

I have a 2006 Jetta TDI with 420,000 km on it. It has been good, and I've had my money's worth out of it. Having the timing belt (and water pump and tensioner) changed at an independent shop costs $700. It's in semi-retirement ... I'm using it this summer for trailer towing only. Partly because the timing belt is coming up (next scheduled replacement at 432,000 km), and the clutch is gone (original ... can't complain), and the EGR cooler is leaking (common issue on this model). The car itself is solid ... it just needs some work. I have not decided what I'll do at the end of this summer. There are a few interesting options that should be on the market by that time.

03-05 Audi 1.8T's
Disregard BMW
05-06 Subaru Impreza's
Chevrolet Cobalt j/k

Read read and read the forums.

To name a few.

I have a 2005 c230 since back in 07 and yes it had some little problems but the engine is solid. I love my car but its parts are expensive. Its somewhat easy to work on. Thank god for the forum DIY section.

I had Toyota and Honda on a pedestal when it comes to quality, but I've been dissapointed with my 2002 Corolla that I bought new and serviced regularly. Currently is at 230K and it burns about 1l of oil at every 500kms. Has been doing this for the past nine years, I keep wondering how did it pass the emission tests lately. One of my friends has an '01 and complains about the same thing. I did some research on this and apparently there were some manufacturing issues with those engines, so there goes Toyota's reputation.

Between my Corolla and Passat had to turn my garage into an oil warehouse.

There is a reason why German cars depreciate in value fairly quickly, and the Japanese tend to hold theirs longer.

^^ Really? Example. 2013 civic si coupe. $32k. 2012 Civic si coupe with 15,000 kms. $20k. That's a pretty slow depreciation rate.

Yeah but after let's say 5 years a $50,000 Benz is roughly the same price as that $30,00 civic si.
