Natural Gas

OP, I'm sure you got the issue sorted by now, but for future, if you smell gas in your house just call your gas supplier ASAP, whether it's union gas/embridge.. They will advise you on the phone what the safest thing to do is while you wait for a rep to show up, if it's not to serious after doing some checks with gas sniffing equipment, dial testing and maybe soap testing, they'll shut the gas off and advise you too have a licenced gas contractor come fix the issue.

Also Gas can migrate into your house from under ground leaks and the mercaptan smell can get scrubbed out, FYI. So any time you smell something, or a gas detector goes off call your supplier first. There's no charge to have a rep come out and make sure it's safe.. Natural gas isn't something too play around with and guess with, it's your safety first..

Enbridge fitters are not to do dial tests. They will do manometer tests. If a manometer test shows a leak there's no need for a soap test, they will just turn off the meter. If the fitter wants to go the extra step and help the customer, they will use a sentry to find leaks for the customer, but because most guys are subs, and don't get paid extra for finding leaks, and because of all their hot calls, they will do a manometer test and turn off the gas , and issue an A tag. In this case the op knew where his leaks were, so he should of just called a contractor and saved time. Enbridge is only responsible up to and including the meter. The customer is responsible for anything after the meter.

I would like to think most people would.

We would all like to think that, but there are too many idiots out there that will listen to whatever sounds plausible on the Internet

what usually causes these residential explosions that pop up once in a while in the news? Insurance fraud? Renovations or digging gone wrong? It doesn't happen regularly but certainly its not unheard of or impossible...

A couple were deliberate by home owners, one was suicide, one was an a independent contractor, pulling a gas service that broke inside a building with service pressure of 40 psi, one was poorly trained contractor.

I guess I made a good decision by not calling Enbridge. Imagine being without hot water or heat for the weekend? Lol

Make sure you call someone in to do it. You don't have heat on yet.

Just to clarify for the sky is falling crowd. Chances of a gas explosion from a leak is near impossible, unless it's pretty much a wide open pipe. We find leaks all the time, especially in apartment buildings and condos. I found 13 leaks in a condo boiler room middle of winter, and 7 boilers were running full fire, and that's just one story. I've pretty much seen it all over the years. You should be more concerned with having a CO problem, then a explosion.

********. Union worker looking to make more work for himself by blowing up your whole block. Gas will pool. Any leak will blow, even if you look at it the wrong way. Contractors will screw you, get a wrench and tighten the fittings yourself. Even better wrap it tightly in gorilla tape. Gorilla tape is similar to duct tape, but since it's black it works on gas pipes.

Lmao, you say crap without knowing what you're taking about. First I'm not union, second it was the customers contractor that fixed it. I issued the A tag and turned it off. I hope you don't live in my area if you think someone should fix a leak with tape, it's against code, and if anyone from enbridge was in your house and found tape fixing a leak TSSA would be called in and it would be at your expense. I hope people have more sense then to take such stupid advice like that. I will say it again, if you're not qualified you shouldn't be giving advice. Go back to your drive through, someone is ordering,

If it's about making money and screwing the customer, why did I offer to fix RockerGuy's leak for free.

Yeah, screw doing it the proper way, Gorilla tape anything, heck use it as a condom or a vaginal diaphragm.......................YMMV

Dude... lol... you are not qualified to reply to sarcasm...

ooops sorry, but you have to admit, sarcasm on the internet isn't so easy to identify, plus I have a gas license not a sarcasm license, I will refrain from giving sarcasm advice and stick to gas advice lmao.

If you are sure of a leak, I am hoping you turned the line off.

The proper advise would be to take pre-caution and get a hold of a qualified tech to resolve the issue.

Thread is full of bs.

Lmao, Ya they have soap and water. People have no idea how many places have gas leaks, commercial and residential.

I don't know if I am remembering this correctly so I may very well be wrong.... but I seem to remember seeing or hearing of some guys using a torch or such to check for leaks....? I think I saw someone doing it.... Something about the flame not going back into the line because of the pressure of the leak...
I'm talking probably 20, may be 25, years ago.... I was a kid so I don't know if I'm remembering right.
Have you seen or heard of this? Is my memory serving me right?

...cuz we all know: If you can't fix it with duct tape or a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
