My first crash :-(

I have hit two left turners, one in 1961 and one in 1965. Since then, I have ridden as far as the distance to the moon and hit no more of them. I seldom use the right lane, because I am seldom among the slow vehicles on the road, even on a low-powered bike. When I see someone "poking out" from a road or driveway on my right, I generally switch to high beam when I suspect the driver may be looking at me, and I try to show I am gazing at that driver, full on, but of course I am not, because we need to keep our attention moving. I switch back to low beam when I am past.

I suspect this sort of intensity makes me seem larger than I am, because I have not
hit another one of these menaces in 46 years, in ten provinces, and in 38 states.

Drivers have managed to hit me a few times. The collisions always seem to happen
when I am not moving. I am sure that the most dangerous speed for me is ... ZERO!

Good luck, Original Poster. I hope you recover soon, in both manners:
your physical condition and your financial interest in the motorcycle.

OP Don't think of anything right now except how smart you were to wear your gear. Imagine your skin on the road should you have chosen to ride squid. Glad to hear you're ok. Make sure you claim the gear with your insurance!

Glad to hear you're still with us.

Sorry about the crash.

May I ask how you got a bruised kidney from the accident?

I myself only have 1 Kidney and have been wondering about any possible injuries to it.

There is absolutely no excuse for the car driver, but if OP bike had ABS probably nothing would've happened. Maybe, that's the reason why Europe makes ABS mandatory on all street bikes in a couple of years...

Some abs systems don't work to well when the bike is leaned over which he was....not sure to what degree.

If the bike is leaned on the public street to the degree where ABS won't work well - you're riding way too fast! I only have an experience with the latest BMW ABS and it works very good.

Nice to hear you they said the driver was at fault. I have heard some horror stories where if you don't hit the car, it's your fault for losing control of your bike.

Thats usually the case but luckily, there were witnesses there for him.

ABS or no ABS you should try to minimize your breaking when cornering/leaned over.

doesnt matter how you play out the scene in your head as to what you could have done. there are too many variables at work with all the other drivers on the road. you could have stopped and been hit from behind by some gazing driver.
All you can do is to keep aware of your surroundings and assume there are only idiots on the road out to get you.

I'm happy your are ok and not apart of the fatality statistics this summer.
Get well soon.

Sorry to hear it man. I often notice that drivers, particularly in larger vehicles, drive with the mentaility that they are going to go wherever they want and its other people's responsibility to stop and accommodate them. It doesnt matter if they see you or not, they're going and tough luck for you for being in the way.

I saw a guy yesterday in a jeep on yonge a bit south of finch. I was on a patio having a bite. The guy, casually leaned back and smoking, decides he wants to do a u turn in the middle of yonge. He cant because there is traffic on all sides. So he just sits in the middle of the left lane with his blinker on. Southbound traffic could not move and is beeping at him. He could care less. Then when he finally can he hammers his u turn and violently cuts of two drivers coming in the other direction, then takes off down a side street. I got up and yelled at him from my seat. I was angry just watching him.

These people will all have accidents at some point. And they will be at fault.

I don't remember if a flew or tumbled but that is what likely caused the bruised kidney. I'm sure my insides were jostled around a bit. it hurts but doc said no permanent damage from what they can tell.

SMIDSY? look it up, or look up V-Tom's posts.

There's techniques to make yourself more visible with left turners. It's our responsibility to be aware of the limited driver education with respect to motorcyclists and take safety into our own hands to make ourselves more visible.

I hope you get well soon.

wtf!! I thought you were joking when you said bruised kidney! lol! glad you're ok.

This just makes me want to spend the extra time to always have my camera mounted. When I'm in a car though sometimes I like to just lay on the horn so they feel like a bad driver. Love it when someone tries to change lanes in front of you without looking and you're in their blind spot; my horn is always on the ready whenever cars are near me and there is any possibility of them being a ******/idiot (passing cars waiting to turn in front of me, left turners at lights, when I'm passing minivans)

Hey, sorry to hear, crashing sucks and all but love to see that you're appreciating the unique experience and are ready to learn from it. Welcome to the club, heal up and get some new gear over the winter (possibly at the motorcycle show) so you can be ready for day 1 in spring.
