Motorcycles - You need to be rich... or have a trust fund.

Is that misspelling of border intentional?

No, that's a symptom of a "smartphone" that thinks it knows what I want to type before I finish the word. I've never had to check my spelling this much ever before untilled I got this phone. Anyone know how to turn this feature off on an android?

Remove phone number. Replace with iPhone. Done.

You probably need to give the version/flavour of aNDROID.

Here is a good starting point...

:D

I guess part of my point was - at 3000 bucks, if you do the math, that's:

4050 pretax at a 35% tax bracket or
4200 pretax at a 40% tax bracket...

Any tax rates under that and you're fundamentally spending more than 10% of your total yearly income on insurance....

....

....

That's nuts. I hate insurance companies

You're suggesting $40K as a yearly salary. In Toronto you should consider that the minimum wage if you plan on having your own apartment instead of living with mom and dad. Don't expect it to get better.

You can afford a bike on that income if it's your passion and ONLY love but forget about fine dining, exotic vacations, designer clothes. Learn to wrench and don't ride like a cop magnet.

For people with reasonably clean records and over 25yo, insurance on a bike should be no problem and very affordable. If money is so tight that they can't afford the $600-$800/yr to insure the bike, then they probably shouldn't be buying it in the first place.
The keyword in your statement is "should". I talked to a guy in his 40's with a CLEAN record... quoted $4,000/yr.

After shopping around, found only one place under $1,000/yr.

Every single day, I consider moving to another province!

That is what I'm suggesting, which seems generous as per stats can. Agreeably incomes are likely higher in Toronto, however even at a 10-15% premium for inflation and another 10% for location, the math still doesn't pan out.

http://www.statcan.gc.ca/edu/img/edu02_0019a_01-eng.jpg

If you live on your own, and make 40K a year, strictly insurance on a motorcycle becomes a significant spend as a component of your yearly income and a very good chunk of your discretionary.

So the question was, how do you guys swing it; not everyone can live in their mom's basement...

My point was that if you want nice stuff you have to be smart or patient. Smart enough to get the right education, pick the right stocks, see the good opporunities. Or you have to be patient enough to slowly accumulate enough wealth that you can afford things. At $40K a year the accumulating will be very slow.

My general rule, occasionally broken, is to limit my hobby costs to 10% of my income. If I was making $40K I would not buy a motorcycle with a $3K insurance requirement.

Do people with passions about things other than motorcycles whine about their costs?

Do artists whine about the price of canvas or good paint brushes? Do equestrians whine about the price of oats and barn doors? Do guitarists whine about the price of a top line Gibson or the wear factor on strings?

If you fork out $3-$5K a year to run a bike that's $30-$40K you don't have for a down payment on a house ten years from now. Pick what you want to whine about and when. As I said earlier, smart or patient. What's your forte?

HA! As if the iPhone autocorrect is any better.
After doing the initial setup of my latest iPhone, the first thing I do is connect to my wifi and then disable autocorrect.
I learned from my 3GS last year to just disable autocorrect so when I got my Android in march, I naturally disabled it.

Venom, android is pretty simple. Try going to Settings -> Keyboard...
Use your head.

@topic: Your location matters a whole lot when getting insurance.
Go to an online quote site and type in the exact same information regarding your vehicle and your license, but try two different postal codes within Ontario. One from Toronto, and another one from somewhere far, such as Sault Sainte Marie.

I've been playing with my brothers new windows phone, not bad. I HATE,LOATHE AND DESPISE APPLE AND APPLE PRODUCTS! I hate their marketing, feminine looks, and most of all the head up their ass users. So not an option. There us way more things I like about android then I hate about it.

So off topic. I'm sorry and that's all ill contribute in this topic about phones.

It's not like the old days even 15 years ago where you could get an M1, R1 and pay $1K

Things have changed, and precisely because people view it, including the insurance companies as a frivilous vehicle and ego accessory, complete with high profile accidents and elevated risks, the insurance companies have begun pricing out people who treat it as such.

But if you ride, rain or shine, cold or hot, for 9.5 to 10 months, will start off on anything with 2 wheels cause you just plain love it, and aren't a high risk candidate (which can only be proven over time),you will find the prices drop and you can also justify rates similar to cars. Your savings over cars come elsewhere mind you, in terms of time, gas, parking, and sheer balls out daily fun.

But if you want a glorious 1L or 600SS sitting in your garage until a +22C Sunday....yes it is a waste of money, unless you have money to waste.

Most likely as is the case increasingly in other parts of the world, you will have to work you way up the cc ladder, and earn a SS in terms of both rider skill, trust, finances, and ultimately you will earn more respect. This has served to cut down on SSquids that's for sure.

Just to add to a point above....good point....if it is a hobby, limit the costs...oooooooooor merge hobbies with necessities, i.e. make it your commuting vehicle if you can. Your sweet sweet SS wont stay so clean....but then again I like my bitches dirty! hahaha

A guy in his 40's with a clean record is much more likely to be quoted $1000 than $4000. It takes five minutes of effort on his part to find a more reasonable rate than the ridiculous $4000 quote. I'm guessing that most of his quotes were within X% of $1000, with the single $4000 quote being an outlier.

Sadly, this kind of common sense seems to have disappeared from modern society.

On the iPhone it's settings/general/keyboard/auto-correct. *

**It costs me over $1,000 a year for a 650 weestrom. *My first bike was $224 a year, $1,000,000 liability only. *But what kid would want to ride a 20 year old 250 cc cruiser nowadays?

So confused... you've been on the forum since 2008 and don't ride? Or you did ride but couldn't afford it.

I know a few people that have the smallest bike so its cheap and insurance is cheap. I'd never pay $3000 for insurance, that's just crazy talk. You could always pic up a second job...
How do you guys afford to pay 3000+ dollars a year for motorcycle insurance on a 600 SS?

I keep trying to get my head around the super high cost of ownership for something you can only use 6-7 months of the year. Is there something I'm missing?

That seems like a ton of money. What do you people do, because whatever it is, I want to do it as well!

I must agree with those that that say motorcycle insurance has gotten out of hand. I wanted to get a bike for the past 3 years but I've ended up on a 50cc scooter until I hit 30. Embarrassing to say the least! Anyway, I'm turning 30 next season and I picked up a 650 V-Strom. I still won't get a great rate with a clean record, probably over $1K for sure for a non SS bike. I will be using the bike for 10 months out of the year, but what gives. Insurance in unbelievable and I don't live in the GTA. With the exception of those SS bikes, I don't see why the rates are so high to cruiers/dual sports or anything on freaking two wheels that is not a race bike. There are people out there that enjoy riding for what it is and aren't hooligans. Why lump us all in one basket? ARGH!

I agree with rafiki here. I am over 19 , got my M1 July 15 2011 called SF July 14, told them I don't have my M1 yet and how much would it be to insure a brand new ninja 250? they said $40/mo. anything over 600cc was in the thousands/yr.~ (edit) and a 600SS was in the $900's ~

So yeah.... it does seem like a lot of money, but you do have choices.

Insurance on a non-SS bike for someone over 25yo is quite affordable, but don't expect it to be free. The insurance company is taking on significant risk by promising to pay all of your future claims, and that requires a premium commensurate with the risk.

That seem quite fair IMO. A new rider doesn't belong on a 600+ SS, so the coverage should not be offered or it should be in the thousands of dollars per year to cover the huge risk.

What beginners don't know is that small bike are fun as all hell!!!! Sure it won't seem like it at first, but I know that me personally along with a few others here that on the street after riding a bigger bike those little 125-250 are a hoot! Nothing like pushing the hell out of a little machine!!

Why beginners dont know, most of them probably started on a 125/250. What you said otherwise is very true except only occasionally 125/250 is fun once a while. I started on a 250 and I miss my ninja be honest. But I cant find myself always on a 250, too boring.
