more tech we don't need

After a dozen years of using $300 Phillips shavers I decided to try this $50 shaver from Amazon. Still working like new after 2yrs of use and shaves just as good as the expensive ones I had plus it’s quieter and much lighter which is nice for travelling.

Tho', the ones that work better are "Feather", they cost more than 10c a blade but are still less costly than the multi-blade cartridges.

I've been using DE safety razors for about 8 years now. I'm using Feather blades too. You can also buy variety packs to test out a bunch of brands.

Cheap, effective, and less wasteful than disposables. I'm happy I made the switch, and still haven't found a downside. I'm guessing the push for the modern 27-bladed Mach 15 disposable razor was fueled solely by the marketing departments of the razor companies?

I used a DE safety razor for decades, then couldn't find replacement blades, so I switched to Harry's. Luckily my work doesn't require me to shave every day and two days growth is OK with the multi blade. Monday morning is a bit of a challenge for clogging after not shaving since Friday morning. Glad to find these sources for replacement blades (I'm old and never thought to look on the interwebs for these). Now I need to find replacements for the soap in my bowl.

I've been with dollar shave club for longer than i can remember now. They just keep sending me the stuff every 2 months (as i dont need to shave often). I actually have a stash of them and can share some with the wifey if/when she wants to shave her legs lol

we have a toaster with a bluetooth connection , it will make my phone go ding when the toast is done.

Or I can just watch it pop up,
As if anyone is going to go to that much effort.

I have a collection of old safety razors (like my Dad used to use). For grins my son and I loaded them up with fresh blades to give it a whirl.
OMG what a pain fest. Not sure how the ol'boy ever managed that on a regular basis.

Seems like a bunch of you (REAL MEN) are still using them. What am I doing wrong?

But it's called the internet of things... they want every appliance to eventually be connected that way they can gather all your data points to sell you stuff

Five bucks says the toaster has a microphone. Gets you around phone permissions if the sound is gathered externally and transmitted as data.

"okay toaster, make my toast golden brown"

damn it toaster, I said "golden brown"! Not "go to town"!

It is all about the right combination of blade and razor for you. Different blades shave differently. When you hit the combo they work extremely well. There is a bit of technique but it is not some major skill either.... I found when I made the switch I had a bad habbit of going too fast that I needed to break. Places that sell safety razors online usually offer combo packs to let you try different brands.

I use Astra Premium Platinum blades with my Merkur razor. The Merkur blades are a little better for me than the Astra but you get 100 Astra blades for $15 give or take, that lasts me many years. I know lots of people that like the Astra blades. My costs are around 1¢ per shave.

I’m no shaving savant, but this is what works for me. Guaranteed a nice close shave with mostly zero cuts or irritation.

- Shave immediately after shower, don’t dry off face
- Use a high quality shave cream/soap. I like Proraso soap (Taylor Of Old Bond Street if I want to be fancy) with a badger brush to be old school cool. Started using Nivea Protect cream when travelling which works just as well, just less cool. Gilette super foamy whatever doesn’t work for me at all.
- Shave with a near zero pressure and with the grain. You can do multiple passes, perpendicular then against the grain, to get a super duper close shave. I don’t bother.

The last point is key, multi blade razors have safety handicaps to keep you from slicing your face, DE razors don’t.

What about the razor. If it holds the blade is it good enough? They all look similar.
Also any warm towel action or just a warm face wash first?
I'd really like to be able to use these razors. One has a handle that unscrews and fits in a little metal tin the size of a large stamp. AND I want to quite gettin screwed on the multi blade shite

Yes, another point. Shaving creme is a no go, at first I thought "yeah right" well it is no good for this. You need the brush and soap. I used to buy fancy shaving soaps...I just use Dove now. Right after a shower or in the bath....

Different razors models/brands will have very fine differences. There are also different types of razor heads like open comb, safety bar, closed comb etc. My Merkur is a closed comb from memory, it has been a long time since I thought about it.

Like others notes, shave after a shower or in the bath with a wet face, I guess it opens the pours.... No need for a hot towel. Toss the shaving creme in the garbage and used soap and the brush to lather up. Move slower than you likely did with a multiblade. Get a blade sampler pack (usually five of each of common brands) to find the best combo.

I think some can be more aggressive than others, some are adjustable. I use an Edwin Jagger DE89BL paired with Astra blades and Omega brush with Proraso soap. Both have held up great for the past five years so I have no need to upgrade.

If memory serves my son and I used shaving foam when we attempted it. What's the deal with the brush? Is it not enough to lather up by hand? Maybe I invest in a brush and give it another go.

I use a straight razor.

There's a learning curve, but given I have varying amounts of facial hair (in various states of tending at different points in the year lol) a straight razor is simply the best option for making nice crisp lines.

I switched to Dollar Shave Club some time ago for a while and I actually did like their blades, but as soon as I grew my beard back in, safety blades make it near impossible to get a crisp line. Boom, back to my straight razor. I do actually like it - hard to get a closer shave.
