... and controlling the internet in Canada. You don't know much about Canadian internet. Canada doesn't control Canadian internet. A big part of of Canada's internet is switched in the US.
Today, if you post Canadian hate speech on FB, an American company's property, you'll currently be breaking the EULA of FB, but you're not breaking any Canadian laws... that any decent lawyer can"t beat.
With this new Canadian law, Canadian hate speech is against the law and punishable anywhere it's posted. Canadian prosecutors will have a legal route to force FB, and the like, to reveal user's IP addresses in Canada.
Seems like a pretty typical Canadian law to me. High minded and entirely un-enforceable.

I can't see how any political group could use this law to suppress dissent.
Saying Trudeau is an idiot is dissent, but not hate speech or racist, so not illegal.
Saying Trudeau is an idiot because of his french-canadian heritage IS racist, so is illegal
I can spot the difference.
Remember, we as Canadian's don't have "Free Speech" guaranteed in our constitution. we just have laws against hate speech and racism, everything else is open for discussion.

You are so late to the game . JT has the main media on a 600 million dollar payroll since 2018 . What ever you read or hear in the main media is ultra light on JT. What media in the world would sit on a story like black face . What media would give anyone a pass on that . Unless they knew their paycheck is in jeopardy if they report too much .

He will make the ministry of truth for the internet or something similar . The government in power will control what is and what isn't the truth .

We have all the laws on the books for racism and and hate . Why do we need more . Do you see a big rise in racism or hate ?

You like it right now . When you can hear and read what you want . That is why you like our system. Slowly the government will squeeze that away . One small move at a time .

Problem is people get their "news" from social media too often now (unfu*kingbelievable) and when the latest viral cat video and whatever Biden ate for lunch that Trump fanatics are up in arms about and causes the algorithms to trend that to the top instead of the "boring" actual news, well, here ya go.

If people look outside social media, use some critical thinking, and source their news from other places (Start with Reuters), suddenly the fog lifts.

Angry? Hell naw. To the contrary I'm having a good laugh with the same-ol-song-and-dance routine is all.

I could never go through life that pessimistic and angry. I go for a walk or a ride, smell the fresh air, forget politics and all my worries, and remember that we live in one of (of not THE) best country in the world.

Reality check yourself every now and then.

I follow reputable journalists, but never canadian or american ones, I find they cant cover more than 2 topics at once, and often switch between racism and covid, I got headaches and stopped watching

I like Reuters, Al Jazeera, and a few other foreign outfits

That is the scary thing and why I would like to have a guarantee of free speech. You could simply disagree with an idea or take a moral stance on something without spewing hate yet it could be then considered hate speech by not agreeing. There is not a lot of tolerance among the so called tolerant.

Agree. Without proper controls, the party in power could push behind closed doors for anything that doesnt fit the party narrative should be considered hate against the thieving overlords.

Yes which is why I said I would like to have it in Canada. I believe we already have laws to protect people so if I use free speech and say I am going to kill someone that can be viewed as a threat and I can be charged. It can turn sideways very quickly when a government in power decides you need to fall in line and agree with something, and if not you are now guilty of hate speech.

I am mostly on the page with you. We can reasonably say whatever we want without fear of criminal charges and/or being disappeared.

It is very disappointing that government spends so much money and wastes so much time on trying to control the messages that we see instead of just trying to be decent well-meaning humans that don't need a filter between them and their constituents.

When the government introduces legislation to control what you must say, then free speech no longer exists.
