More car tire(on a mc) fun

If the maximum lean angle of your couch doesn't surpass the tire's ability to flex, then there is no problem. In fact, you'll have way more contact patch with the car tire while its flexing.

A Harley that I got stuck behind at Deals Gap yesterday had its cornering clearance limited by its highway pegs hitting the ground long before any traction limit of even the crappiest tire could be reached. When that forced him to run wide in a corner and almost go off the road, I passed him (with my sport compound proper motorcycle tires and no cornering clearance issues) and left him far behind ...

I don't see any way around a car tire causing the bike to want to stand up in corners and require a fair bit of steering effort to get it to turn. I replace motorcycle tires that get flat-spotted long before they even remotely resemble the squareness of a car tire.

First off, I never even knew people did this. After watching some of the "dark side" I must say the results are much better than I thought, all the bikes of course are cruisers or tourers, but still.... Not going to do it BTW, just amazed that it works at all.

One thing that pops in my mind, the more people that do this the more likely the motorcycle tire makers will convince the motorcycle manufactures to make rims for these bikes in .5 sizes only (17.5 for example) just to stop people from doing it.

Again, for those of you that have never used a car tire on their bike, please do not make any comments.
How can you,if you have not done it?
I have and am now on my second car tire, the first one lasted almost 30,000 kms.the one I have on now is at 12,000 and shows no sign of wear.
This is a big bike .
I got tired of shelling out $250-$300 every year for Metzlers or Avons that were getting 5-8000 K before going bald.
Yes cost was an issue for me, but safety is also a big issue too. never had a problem.
Heres another video, this guy has his tire pressure a bit high I keep mine at 32 and it rides like a dream.

In all my years I've see some people do some really stupid things. Seems I've underestimated, again.

I currently have 20,000km on my Pirelli Angels. It's a sport touring tire. I've taken it to the East Coast, West Virginia, Muskoka and other little joy rides. I'm sure I could get another 5k on them.

Did all this without sacrificing lean angles.

Car tires can only work on cruisers, I suppose.

What kind of bike are you riding?? I can get 20,000+ km out of a sport touring tire on the back of a ZX10R.

This is a discussion board Macrider. We are doing just that.If your video is of someone with credentials that impress you, talk to some tire experts. That rider uses his feet as outriggers throughout the video in a parking lot! If he can't keep his feet where they belong and in control of the bike,he should trike it.
I have never used a car tire because i know better based on my personal knowledge of where the "better odds lie".

I am done here, discussing this Dark Side VS non Dark side on GTAM is a useless waste of time.
There are other forums that are more enlightened.

hellokitty.com?

My B-Stone 023's were on my GSXR for 11,000 kms, then moved them onto my KTM for another 8,000 so far.....front still looks almost new, and the rear might be half worn out at most, And I don't baby them, in fact when strafing apexes, I think I have ridden harder on these than any other tire I have had....I didn't plan to, but the tires just grip and grip, like a full on hypersport tire, but last three times as long.

....further more, the simple fact that in Canada, your motorcycle insurance is basically null and void if you ride on a car tire, I wouldn't be caught dead doing it.

Got 9k out if my 023gt's??? No burn outs at all, and the rear was completely bald and front had maybe 20% left.
I've seen you ride, how the heck you pulled 18k of those tires is beyond me.

They still look fantastic.....I can easily ride another yr or more on them. I am waiting for them to die just cuz I wanna try some knobbies on the KTM, but they aren't co-operating.

My bike is 200 lbs lighter than yours, and when I carry luggage it has it's own tire,LOL

They've done 5 long weekend trips (@ 1500+ kms each) thru PA, 2 long wknds (@ 1200+ kms each)thru the Finger Lakes, three 1 week long rides thru PA, WV, and KY to Indy and home ( 3500 kms each)....and two weeks at Deals Gap riding like an idiot. Oh did I mention that 90% of the miles on them I towed my trailer behind the bike? LOL

It's all relative. next to my bike, yeah it's fat. Next to Corey's, it's a starving ethiopian with flies on it's lips.

What PSI do you run in them?

By nature of it's construction, a car tire is not designed for lean and underinflating it will not solve the issue. Like I said, when you go slow enough (as many riders do) to not to lean then yeah, it'll somewhat work. When you start leaning hard and lifting the tire, the contact patch is minimal and the shoulder wear huge. If you can't ride a bike properly and just want to look badass than buy a trike and stop pretending!

And if one of you guys actually does want to lean, like this:
http://www.hdforums.com/forum/attac...2-fianlly-got-to-try-a-car-tire-1-ct-tire.jpg
That just does wonders for the steel belts, separation, heel and toe, bald spots, overheating, etc.

Nevertheless, if you insist that saving a couple of hundred bucks a year is crucial for your 20,000 dollar HD then please make sure you buy yourself a symmetrical and directional car tire at least because many of them aren't and then you'll have lots of fun channelling water or braking.

Here's a very good article, just because something can be done doesn't mean that it should be done.

As for my personal experience, I've been selling and mounting tires for 8 years.
