Moncton shootings

we we have a supposedly heavily patrolled border to keep the loonies out if that's what you mean.

Our border is often touted as the worlds 'longest unguarded border.' The vast majority of illegal handguns come from south of the border. If you're talking about a 'two pronged attack' then that must include illegal importation of firearms.

I was being a little sarcastic...any approach here is going to have to have many prongs...starting with how we deal with mental health issues generally in society, then how we put this into the framework of gun ownership without a collective punishment element. The illegal importation thing is the too..but that takes money to solve and there's a lack of that right now.

For a minute I was thinking you were advocating an armed society in canada because of the armed idiots to the south who might pose a threat. Maybe one day, when they invade with water tankers.

I don't generally advocate for doing much of anything that the Americans do, as they tend to be the best counter example available. I shake my head every time some social conservative starts talking about mandatory minimum sentences, drug laws, changes to gun ownership laws..... precisely because these are things that we already seem to do much better, based on incarceration and recidivism rates.

Just found this article linked to on Reddit, and thought it made some good points -- specifically that this guy's sanity has been waning for awhile, but despite his anti-police and anti-society ranting no one thought about reporting him to the police:

Canadian law explicitly provides options for anyone who observes such behaviour. Bourque was known to possess firearms, and was showing dangerous signs of mental illness and perhaps violent intent. Anyone could have notified the police or the Canadian Firearms Centre, just by making a phone call, and explained their concerns. The police could then have visited Bourque, seized his firearms and taken him for psychiatric evaluation. This sort of thing already happens. This is not science fiction — it’s part of the daily duties of our police forces. Sometimes, such interventions are eventually deemed unwarranted, and the firearms are returned to the individual. Other times, if it is concluded that they are indeed a threat to themselves and others, even if institutionalization is not called for, the police can keep the guns effectively indefinitely.
Though the system can be abused, on the whole, this is a good thing. Mental illness can develop without warning and police need the tools to disarm people before they become violent. But the public — specifically those closest to these disturbed individuals – are the only real line of defence here. Very few people are kept under active police surveillance, and rightly so — this is a free country. The tradeoff must be that the public will be the early warning system that detects signs of an impending slaughter, and informs the authorities before the bullets fly. Talking to the media after a shooting about how your buddy had gone weird is all well and good, but maybe telling the police before anyone dies might work out a bit better for everyone?

I'd be careful about promoting the idea of reporting someone to the police because of a questionable point of view or opinion. One only needs to look at the threads on this site and anything could be considered alarming by some sensitive soul:( Diesel you've posted in the thread what rifle should I buy among others (not accusing you of anything) In the current environment caused by the incident in Moncton anybody with an axe to grind could make grieve for any number of posters on this site.

Yeah, it is no secret that I now own guns for the purpose of hunting and target shooting.

According to this article, just some of this guy's friends are reporting:
He had reportedly taken to making vague statements about planning to go out with a bang and take people with him. People close to him said he was often speaking of a war playing out in society, and expressing disgust at those who wouldn’t fight. And most worrying of all, he had recently quit his job, reportedly isolated himself from loved ones and, according to Business Insider, had recently visited with his childhood best friend. At the end of the visit, Bourque apparently wished his friend well, said they probably wouldn’t see each other again, and left.

Now, I wouldn't appreciate any false accusations as I am sure no one would, but if I started telling people I wanted to go out with a bang, said my goodbyes to people, and quit my job, then I should hope some flags would be raised -- if not for the firearms at least for the obvious depression. People don't usually become that reclusive for no reason.

but but but..... guns don't kill people....

Correct me if I'm wrong here...but isn't there a man attached to those guns?

You know, the dude with his finger on the trigger? damn guns

Sentinals would have fixed this no problem.

This guy wasn't reported and that guy in California last week or whatever wasn't reported. That's two right there. There are 350 million people in North America. If .0001% are certifiable nutbars and all nutbars own guns (it's a given), that's 35,000 phone calls.

Personally I think this guy capped himself off. No way he is going to let them take him alive.

He was arrested and taken into custody not long ago....night at the police station will not be an enjoyable experience for him....
