Mesh Jackets - how well do they work?

Last season I finally retired my 8-year old leather jacket and got 2; one for cold weather and one for hot weather.

The hot weather jacket is made by Speed & Strength, and has a waxed-canvas shell, with leather on the shoulders and outer parts of the arm (impact zones). Pretty good compromise, and feels like I'm not wearing a jacket at all when at speed as air flows right through the canvas.

Ok so I bought the Joe Rocket Phoenix 13 mesh jacket w rain/wind layer. It's what GP bikes had in stock in my size. Nothing in Olympia was available for me to buy on the spot. Went for a test run today. Definitely an arm saver! As soon as I took the jacket off for a pit stop arms felt the heat right away. Anyho it's breezy, still feel some heat in the shoulders and back a little, like someone mentioned. But I definitely feel less at risk, and I didn't overheat.

Thanks for all the input!

Mesh gear with dri fit underneath are great combos.

This past week of 30+ degree heat been riding in a mess jacket. Haven't really had a issue with the heat. Especially when moving. This is on my 20 minutes commute. I also wear kevlar lined jeans and although a little sticky at times don't feel overheated.

As for the performance of the mesh; during my lessons I took a tumble at 25-30 km/hr. Landed first in my palms then on my arm where the armor is. The arm of the jacket has scuffs but held up well. No tears and nothing to note on my arm, no bruising.

So another question has come up... how do you get the funk out of these jackets, besides possible washing them all the time.

Wear deodorant? I dont have funk problems with mesh. The base layer should do all the evaporating and hold 99% of the funk. An occasional rainstorm is enough to keep things decent and if it has some funk, wash it once a year.

Let it air dry after use in open area.
Do not place it in the closet moist as this is where this issue arises. The funk is the nastiness that may grow in moist dark places.

haha yes of course, but it don't last so long on 30+ days for hours on the road. It's not really funky but I could see it getting that way. I just put the jackets outside for some fresh air. ;)

I take my protective gear out. Throw it in the washing machine. Light wash. Hang to dry. Never had a problem.
Read the washing instructions. Like the obvious. For any dirt marks. Rub in a little of the laundry soap.

After a long ride in the extreme heat we're having lately, it's nice to have a good neighbour who will hose you down. (Remove boots / helmet first). Hang wet gear outside to dry. No funk.

Just setup a sprinkler before you head out. Turn it on when you get home. No neighbour required.

a chlorine pool is excellent for getting the funk out of hockey equipment
toss it in and let the jets whirl it around for an hour
place on grass in the sun to dry

highly recommended in the fall after opening the bag for the first time in 6 months
