Marathons, CN Tower climb, and other Charity Runs (RANT!)

I think some are being a little too hard on charities. Now granted, there are a lot that squander the money, and there are definitely a lot that have borderline disgusting pay for executives and directors (I tend to shy away from these sorts), but there are others (small, inner city types) who are mostly if not all volunteer, and do the best they can with what they got. They make money stretch.

There are a few issues in this thread as I see it (beyond the OP's point of having to pay to play) that have people mad....

1) Payroll Extortion.
2) Wasted money on execs and employees and only a small portion going to the cause.
3) Too many charities so they have to spend big money on marketing to make sure they get more money to spend on marketing...

Numbers 1 and 2 are bad period, they are serious problems. Number 3, well there are just too many and they are competing with each other, simple solution is to reduce the number, one per cause.

The inner city all volunteer model is the exception, not the rule these days (IMO). They tend to want people's time and goods like food. Less motivated by cash.

I donate time and resources to the New Hope Bicycle Co-Op in Hamilton. The rest of them are cordially invited to bite me.

And why does the Toronto Food Co-Op always hire a talking head that you'd like to punch in the face (cough, couch, Gerrard Kennedy, cough)?

One thing I am wondering. What is stopping anyone from just running in a street race without paying. Sure you will not get a shirt and a time slip but how are they going to enforce that you are registered. Are they going to arrest you for running down the street without a number pinned to your shirt? Obviously not if you expect to win the race but for everyone else just time yourself...

Obviously will not work for things like the tower climb...

food for thought...

....extend this to a rogue dragon boat...might be quite funny.

What's your thoughts on these:

children's hospitals

I used to donate to Sick Kids. Being helped with a tumor when I was very small, I felt that they had earned what money I could give. Then their foundation CEO got a $1.6M golden parachute. They now get NONE of my money.

I also give very sparingly to who I do give to, but I am very generous with my time. If I am able to help, I will help all I can.

Roasted: How about ride for sight? Do you feel the same way about all charity events - sporting or otherwise?

I've never looked into the structure of Ride for Sight, fees etc. but yes, I'm guessing most people enter it as a social event/normal ride and I certainly don't think they are "curing" anything.

My gf works for sick kids. I always laugh my *** off when I'm in a grocery store with her or something and someone asks her if she'd like to donate to Sick Kids......the look on her face is always pricess. LOL
