Marathons, CN Tower climb, and other Charity Runs (RANT!)

This is why I don't dont contribute anymore to any of these causes....the CEO's are raking it in while the people who the money are intended for don't see a dime.

Pink Ribbons, Inc

I was in Crappy Tire today and they have various ribbons for sale at $7.99 each. It states $2.00 of each sale goes to the charity. Therefore 75% of the money DOESN'T go to the charity. Furthermore you can buy a MADD ribbon and waste the other $2.00 supporting a temperance league.

Roasted: How about ride for sight? Do you feel the same way about all charity events - sporting or otherwise?

Like some others have mentioned - I just pay the entrance fee and compete.

As for donations, I rarely donate money to any charity - I donate my time. I do like Second Harvest though, because they have one of the highest efficiency ratings of all charities in the GTA and their salaries are quite low, but run by very competent, intelligent and dedicated staff.

if you want something done right you got to do it yourself.

you want to find a cure get in to medical research.

gets your hands dirty and find the cure. throwing money at it hasn't worked.

Won't the researchers want paycheques?

ma bee they should be on piece work. that ell get them to a cure. we can donate to a pot and whoever finds a cure will win the lottery. imagine how many people will start looking for a cure for free. send em all on a wild goose chase.

Won't the researchers want paycheques?

And thats exactly the problem.....why find a cure and end your funding? Why not keep milking it, keep saying "we're close" so you can keep getting your paycheque?

sussh... don't give away the industry secrets.

As someone said to be before "Why cure diabetes? They will always make money selling needles, testers, and insulin".
It does make business sense.

IMO When profits are tied to health the people will always lose out to profits.

What's your thoughts on these:

Soup kitchens
women's shelters
children's hospitals
dying children's wish coming true charities

Start a charity run for them, and we shall think about it.

Soup kitchens dont have CEO's or a ton of well paid staff to suck funds away from the people. Same thing with women shelters. Childrens Hospitals and Dying childrens wish is a wash....they do good, but are also bloated.....so do i give a $100 knowing only $20 makes it to the kids? Nope. If those people REALLY cared they would trim the fat and have ALL the proceeds go to the kids....but they dont. Its a paycheque for them.

Pharmaceutical companies don't like cures, they prefer treatments for symptoms. Makes better business sense.

They already have cures for Cancer, AIDS, etc about 10 years ago. They'll never see the light of day.

i used to do a lot of the charitiy half marathons around the GTA, one summer did all the major ones for a lark...it's frigging expensive. sure if you jump in a year earlier they are about $30 to $50 each...but that's if you know your schedule and sometimes i have stuff come up, so i don't buy into the race until later, but by that time it can be anywhere from $50 to $90 per race. and then you find out that they charity only donates 20% of the earnings to the folks that need it, maybe less...i stopped running these races, the money grab was ridiculous...don't get me started on united way, grrrrr...

as for

"What's your thoughts on these:

Soup kitchens
women's shelters
children's hospitals
dying children's wish coming true charities"

it's a shame the charity that would sponsor those would take 80% of the earnings...

You know, we live in one of the wealthiest nations in the world with one of the best social safety nets..how much charity do we really need to give???

I had a friend who always ran the CN Tower and badgered me for money until i snapped. I basically told her that i want to go to a track day and need $50 from her. She looked at me like i grew a second head. I then explained to her that her enjoying the run up the CN Tower has NOTHING to do with the charity but its something that she wants to do and is required to pay for it through raising money for charity. I want to go track day riding and need to raise money for charity, in fact, 100% of my donations will go to the local race track. lol

I gotta try this one!
