Mangle finger while cleaning

Ah, I always wondered. My snow blower manual says "Not to be used for clearing snow from the roof of your house" - someone has to write this stuff, does it always come about after someone else's mishap or are you able to be proactive?

<sigh>

My job in the real world involves trying to stop people from doing stuff like that.

Arrrrrrgh.

** WARNING **
DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGER IN HERE!
LOCK EQUIPMENT OUT BEFORE SERVICING

... or something like that.

I will say that I lube my chain by letting it run in 1st gear on the stand....but I only spray the lube on like that witht he red nozzle on the can so my hands aren't near the chain, But I definitely turn it off when I go to wipe the excess off the chain with a rag.

Glad you're okay OP.

I know a couple of dumbo's that do this. And when I pointed out what might happen they scoffed at me like I was an idiot.

It doesn't matter how many of these mangled finger threads I read, people will still believe that it won't happen to them.

I put the bike on the rearstand and spin the wheel by hand. It takes very little time. I don't know how much time one is actually saving by running it in gear. A couple minutes? My fingers are worth a lot more than a couple minutes of my time.

I clean the chains with my bike off but i lub it with the bike on and in gear.

i don't see why people feel that puting the bike in gear on a stand is safe. but whatever

sorry to hear about your mangled finger(s) BUT lemme express myself, why on earth would someone put bike in gear while cleaning chain why why??? it is a no brainer. just spin the ****ing wheel by hand. i am done.

I spin the wheel with my foot while holding the lube with one hand and a rag with the other.

Been there done that like almost 30 years ago......wasn't prettty- flashbacks everytme I clean lube chain.

You guys are being way too nice. This is just IDIOTIC!!! There's no other way to describe it. Anyone with half a brain would be able to see the possible "mangling" that's about to occur and step back. Sorry for your pain dude but seriously man.....

Combination of both. You try to think of foreseeable ways that something could be used wrongly, but it is a never-ending battle. Every time you think you have everything covered, a dumber idiot comes along and does something even more stupid that no one saw coming.

The litigious attitude in the USA is to blame for your snowblower being plastered with as many warning labels as it has. I deal with industrial equipment, where at least the user is supposed to implement and enforce proper lock-out procedures and it's their responsibility (and not mine) if that doesn't happen, but you can't make that assumption with consumer products.

It is only possible to protect against a certain level of stupidity and ignorance. Beyond that, you are on your own. I've had plenty of discussions with clients about the foreseeable idiotic things that people could do with their machine, with regards to how much money they want to spend to prevent that from happening (if it is even possible to do so, which it often isn't).

I spin the wheel with my foot while holding the lube with one hand and a rag with the other.

When cleaning a chain, I spin the wheel in the reverse direction - that way the chain is opening up away from the sprocket at the bottom rather than drawing fingers in - and with the engine off ...

Notwithstanding that it isn't a good idea, a lot of people do it. Thanks OP for the reminder of why not.

Brian you always give great advice - one of the best technical posts I've ever seen was from you on a VW forum. I am pretty sure you have saved lives with your advice!

I smell fish.

That statement assumes the presence of at least half a brain in proper working order.
