Man charged for not giving phone password

Not where i come from, nothing but fields. Unless the cattle are wearing cameras. :)

Wish I could say the same about the rest of your ex-countrymen, but I don't want for Canada to turn into a UK-like cluster****. Hell, the Cold War was sold to the general public as a way to prevent Soviet-style mass citizen surveillance... And what did we get now that we've won? Stalin would have chopped off his left nut to get the level of surveillance we have in Canada and would have sold his right foot and one of his kidneys to get up to the UK levels.

Dude realizes the idiocy of his previous posts but he's in too deep to stop now. Disregard his posts and upside-down UK opinion. We already see where his kind of attitude leads.

Grasping at straws bro. Hide your porn stash and Candy crush trophies before the Gov gets it.

Jeesh... You should have seen how I was treated sometimes when crossing the border when I was a long haul truck driver. I had no problem with having my load x-rayed and them checking my FAST card, documents etc. However, they would scrutinize my cab and go through all of my stuff. Sometimes it looked like a cell that had been shaken down in that Lockup show. Nothing I could do though. The border folks could hold my load for 48 hours for no reason at all. Truck drivers who got irate found themselves sitting there for a day or two until the border folks decided that they had learned their lesson.

people need to understand when your entering Canada, crossing a border, until your cleared you are in a grey zone not Canada. Your "rights" are different until you have been cleared and entered Canada. Your only a Canadian with all the rights and privileges when your through the border.

The agents arent looking at your stuff because they are bored, they look when they have suspicion your story is not complete. Get a Nexus pass, be prescreened and dont talk to an agent.

i know in the states law enforcements cannot check people cell phones but in Canada its the total opposite

so the CBSA had all rights to detain him, don't think whatever the state laws r its the same in canada

As it has been stated... Repeatedly....

It's not so much about them taking your phone it's about them demanding the password. If someone asked for my phone or laptop I would hand it to them. Demanding my password is a different issue entirely.

Learn about "deniable encryption".
You encrypt a hidden partition on your phone or computer that can't be seen without forensic tools.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deniable_encryption (Don't use Tryecrypt, it has holes) (Rubberhose works).

If they suck an image off your device you are hooped. The CBSA has tools that can lift an image off your device without a password or any cooperation from you.
If CSEC gets involved all the encryption in the world ain't gonna save you. They have a back door into all readily available encryption schemes... and a copy of the majority of phone sim cards.
Don't store passwords for VPNs or anything "cloud" on your device.

At the border, US CBP officials can inspect people's cell phones whether entering or leaving the country. There is nothing in their policy requiring the cell phone owner to provide a password, but the CBP can take the cell phone away from you without warrant for up to 5 days initially in order to extract the cell phone's data for examination. That initial 5 day period can be extended indefinitely if CBP makes the necessary applications.

People need to educate them self before spouting off nonsense as fact. Your rights are the same as any Canadian from the time you enter Canadian airspace/the imaginary line on the ground. Nexus is merely a tool to facilitate ones entry, it gets you no higher priority than anyone else nor does it exempt you from talking to an agent.

Nikki doesn't know what she's talking about. The border is a magical gestapo zone of Soviet Canuckistan where you don't even actually exist as an individual. It's only after CBP clears you that you once again become Canadian.

Skis>nexus. When I have my skis I always go through without a second look. Probably because there is no snow in the middle east.

You guys have read Nikki's posts before.Have you ever wondered what she does for a living?

And that has what bearing on the discussion exactly? There's a reason this issue is interesting: it hasn't been tested in courts. No CBSA employee can give you any more information than that.

The convo has sort of veered past the original discussion of the post though, and I think that's what Wingboy was referring to...though I have no idea why he would say what he did, as my current profession is reality TV star.
