Effective immediately, the definition of the driving record has been amended as follows:

Driver Record "0"

Driver who has not held a driver's licence for the past 12 consecutive months: class M1, M2, or M; or
Driver having been held responsible of an at-fault motorcycle accident over the past 12 months.

Driver Record "OTHER" (Preferred Rates)

Driver who has held a driver's licence for 12 months or longer: class M1, M2, or M;
Driver not having been found responsible of an at-fault motorcycle accident over the past 12 months.

This means that the requirement to prove at least 12 consecutive months or prior bike insurance within the past 36 months to obtain the preferred rates is gone. This represents a very significant premium savings for riders that have not had prior bike insurance, but have had at least their M1 license for at least 1 year.

Example 1: a 21 year old on a Ninja 250 with no prior insurance and licensed for 1 year would have paid $1467 for a year for $1M liability; now will pay just $893.

Example 2: a 30 year old on a 750 Shadow would have paid $925; now pays $573.

Above examples are based on two or less minor convictions and living in urban area.

So Jevco doesn't care about the rider being insured for motorcycles in the past, and only that they have had a motorcycle licence for at least 1 year to get a preferred rate? Are you sure?

I was just fiddling around on Kanetix to get Jevco quotes, and it seems you need to be at least 21 (I'm 20, but said 21 to get a quote), that you need to have an M1/2/M for at least 1 year, and that you need to have been insured for at least one year to get a preferred rate.

If I put in that I either had the M for less than a year and/or wasn't insured for a year, then my quote was 2938$ on a ninja250 or 500. With the year of insurance and year of M it was 1781$. Also, a training course doesn't change the quote.

Is Kanetix giving the correct quote? How did you get that 893$ for a 21y.o. with no prior bike insurance?

Sorry if I'm not following something correctly!

Without actually reading half of what you wrote, I'll just give you a rule of thumb to work with:

Kanetix sucks.

If under 25, Kanetix sucks even more.

Call up a broker and talk voice to voice instead of this online stuff.

Jevco only requires that you have had your motorcycle license for one full year including the M1 period to qualify for their Preferred rates. You're best to speak to a Jevco Broker directly in order to receive an accurate quote.

Good to know... I hope Jevco knows that Kanetix is making them look bad.

Only to the ill-informed person who thinks a website is a better source of info than calling up a specialist who makes their living doing this...

Thanks Insurance Guy for being helpful.
Thanks Adri for being pointlessly rude... - I mean, I know its raining, but cheer up, lol.

i dont think that preferred rate thing is true anymore. apparantly J duffy had some rate change and they wont give you that 893 anymore. i callled them up like 2 months ago and i was getting a quote of 893. called them this month to insure the bike, the rate is now 1300, with same driving record and everything.

+1, and 500cc bike is $1500 now.
No point in starting on a 250 anymore.

I like the Ninja 250s more than the Ninja 500s :)

I was thinking more along the lines of a 250cc cruiser vs the 500cc Vulcan (which has ther Ninja 500R engine).

I've called up kanetix before and they just confirmed their non sense. Back in like January, Kanetix quoted me for 3000 from jevco for a 250 ninja with no prior insurance and less than 1 year license at age 22 and they were positive that was the rate. Called up a REAL representative and they quoted me 1800 for the same info. There are a few sites that have given me the same rates as when i've called up proper jevco representatives. I think it's called "Full Throttle Motorcycle" insurance.

I think a decent website that works can be used to fool around with parameters but getting on the phone should be used to get a legit quote.

Heyy Insurance Guy,

What would be the rate for a 20 year old, with an m1 for 2 months, and an m2 for 1 month...No accidents at all, just 1 speeding ticket (15 km/hr above speed limit with a car) on a 2009 ninja 250cc

PM me if possible.

Cheers,

more info than that will be needed, where you live (sometimes right down to the side of the street you live on as ratings change by postal code) makes a difference. some insurance companies care that you did the course some don't (jevco doesn't)... call one of the active brokers here.

The 2011 rating manual will be out shortly with an effective date of May 1st for new business and June 10th for renewal business. Below are some highlights:

1) An average 7.3% rate increase. This is an average. Some may see a little more and others a little less. Details to follow. Although the increase is not dramatic compared to some of their competitors; if you have a Jevco quote and are ready to proceed with a new policy it may be a good idea to finalize this week and potentially save a few dollars.

2) Good news! No change to the rule that Jevco will provide their Preferred rates to riders licensed for a full year regardless of whether or not they have insured a bike in that year.

3) Introduction of a 5% Loyalty discount for riders that have been insured with Jevco for two years or more.

4) Introduction of a 5% new business stability discount for riders that have been insured with the same motorcycle insurer for the past 24 months.

5) Jevco will now offer up to $2,000,000 liability. This is up from their prior maximum limit of $1,000,000.

6) Individuals that register their bikes in their company name will now be allowed, however no commercial or business use will be permitted.

7) Some Ducati models and the VMAX will be coming off of their sport bike surcharge list. Details to follow.

8) Introduction of a 5% multi bike discount.

I will try to keep you all informed as I get more details.

Jevco has modified their sport bike surcharge list. The below listed Ducati & Aprilia bikes will be surcharged. All others will be considered standard and not subject to a surcharge. Jevco previously classified all Ducati & all Aprilia (except the Scarabeo) as sport bikes subject to surcharge.

Ducati 749, 848, 999, 1098, 1198, 1198S, 1198R, Desmosedici RR

Aprilia RSV 1000R, Mille, Factory

The VMAX has also been removed from the sport bike list and is now considered a Standard model.

The 1996 sport models will remain surcharged for this year. The rule has been modified to read:

"Models 16 years and prior are considered Standard Models - Calculate the effective year of the contract minus the model year".

This means that for this calendar year only sport model bikes with a model year of 1995 or older will be considered Standard models.
