Rubbing alcohol is the best but if you want to take care if it once and never replace the chain, you should just powder coat your chain and never have to worry about it again. Extra cred if its fluorescent colored.
Ahhh, I was told to always blame it on the tires, I didn't know there could be contributing factors, thanks! Then if (when) you crash at the track you can blame it on excess chain-lube on the back tire causing the tire to instantly cool by 50 degrees.
I am using the DuPont Chain Saver... I love the ****. Goes on Clear, repels grime and water... chain has over 20,000 on it currently and I would eat off it.... like a ... a... damn, I never went to Church. :/

WD40 is not a lubricant. It cleans and displaces moisture. The best chain lube I know of is AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector(http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produ...s-and-protectants/heavy-duty-metal-protector/). My 2012 BMW S1000RR racebike 520 chain has lasted 3 seasons so far, and still going. Not many people with full time race bikes have a chain last over a year. Yes Lube it.. and every weekend, or every couple rides. Clean it after, and let sit for a bit, so it doesn't get all over your wheel when you ride out.
Also the entire chain needs lubricate to prevent wear. The sprocket contacts the chain spindles, which need lube to prevent wear. The O rings need lube to reduce friction to prevent wear. Think about it.
Ever wonder why the timing chain in a bikes engine lasts 20x longer than the drive chain? Oil. A constant supply of it. Shinkle bout it.
