Lube or no lube?

I bought my first bike from a dealer in the middle of summer last year. When I bought it I asked what type of maintenance things I need to do. He said change the oil, check the tires, etc. I asked him about lubing the chain and he said "Oh, you don't have to lube these ones, they are sealed. Lube will just make a mess, it's not necessary."

I have almost 8000km's on it currently.

I had a friend over to my house yesterday and when he rolled my bike he could hear my chain squeaking. He looked at it and said "Wow, that's dryer than a Nun on Sunday. When was the last time you lubed it?"

I told him what the sales guy told me "Oh, you don't have to lube that one, it's sealed."

He turned his head to the side a little and we sat in complete silence for almost a minute. He told me to ask on gtamotorcycles for the best advice.

From the look on his face I assume I should be lubing it? WD40 ok? Once a month?

Thanks.

John

WD40 would get off faster than a priest on an altar boy.

Lube that thing!
Use gear oil, chain oil, Dupont, whatever floats your boat

I am using the DuPont Chain Saver... I love the ****. Goes on Clear, repels grime and water... chain has over 20,000 on it currently and I would eat off it.... like a ... a... damn, I never went to Church. :/

Go back, ask for free chain, free of charge ;)

I lube it every 500km...

!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't do this when lubing your chain (NSF weak stomachs) !!!!!!!!!!!!!
How NOT to clean/lube your chain:

When I googled for "best motorcycle lube" I saw lots of people saying not to use Dupont, they changed the formula and your chain will explode if you use it?

But WD40 is a better option? Just go get some chain lube from any shop. And remember dont spray it on while your bike is gear.

I am VERY disappointed. I hoped it was a video.

Oh yeah. Dupont is awesome stuff.

Hahaha. Sorry, but, that's not supposed to be that type of post. Its supposed to be educational, altho, at someones expense

I hope you are now cleaning and applying some lube.

WD40 is not a lubricant. It cleans and displaces moisture. The best chain lube I know of is AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector(http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produ...s-and-protectants/heavy-duty-metal-protector/). My 2012 BMW S1000RR racebike 520 chain has lasted 3 seasons so far, and still going. Not many people with full time race bikes have a chain last over a year. Yes Lube it.. and every weekend, or every couple rides. Clean it after, and let sit for a bit, so it doesn't get all over your wheel when you ride out.

Also the entire chain needs lubricate to prevent wear. The sprocket contacts the chain spindles, which need lube to prevent wear. The O rings need lube to reduce friction to prevent wear. Think about it.
