Low / No Stock

Anything that needs new chips is affected right now by a major fire at a manufacturing plant in China I think. Some car manufacturers shut down assembly lines of some models because of this.

I bought a van and delivery time was several months from date of order. Then I saw in the news the plant was being idled cause of a chip shortage for a week.

Here's hoping I get it this summer with enough time to upfit it. I fully expect once I get everything measured out and ordered, its gonna take weeks for the other things to arrive.

that and shortages in general. the used cpu/gpu market is stupid, just stupid.

OEM's are moving their lines to keep the money makers moving (trucks).

The chip shortage is screwing with us.

In addition to the auto assembly plants being idled or production redistributed to high-profit models at the expense of lower-end models ... I'm hearing that it's hard to get certain electrical/electronic components that are everywhere in automation equipment nowadays. If you can't finish building electrical panels then you can't get your equipment up to the point of commissioning it, and that translates into us having less work. All sorts of projects are getting delayed because of this. There is no visible path to the end of this, either.

That's actually it's own bubble. The chip shortage faced by vehicle manufacturers is not 7nm with TSMC but much older processes >20nm(and thus much older fabs). The 7nm shortage is from crypto, Intel ******** the bed and a little bit of Trump's Entity List.

End of the day, TSMC having the best commercially available process and it having real significant performance/efficiency benefits over it's competitors has everyone choosing TSMC as their Fab of choice. This is after the last 10 years of all chip makers becoming 'fab-less".

If you remember the movie Armageddon, there's that quote. "American components! Russian Components! ALL MADE IN TAIWAN"

I mentioned this months ago . Supply chain will start to fail from lockdowns . As I understand there are bidding wars for space on cargo ships. Many shippers have raised frieght cost up 40% . HD as I understand is running out of oil . Many parts are on back order .

What I understand of the chip shortage, is that this is something that was going to happen regardless of coronavirus. The surprise bump in demand for laptops and the like (due to working from home) may have exacerbated this, but it isn't due to lockdowns. Most manufacturing may have had a coronavirus shutdown for several weeks in spring 2020, but it has been considered "essential" ever since. China sorted out coronavirus and got back to normal months ago. Most other countries in Asia (where these electronic components come from) either never shut down manufacturing, or got it done with months ago.

I doubt if that ship captain who put his ship sideways in the Suez Canal a few weeks ago, helped matters any.

Finding garage doors was a nightmare for us.
This year one riding buddy who's building his new house is finding exterior doors massively overpriced and at least a 3 month wait.
Couple other riding buddies bought new dirtbikes and can't find boots anywhere.

Not sure how accurate it is, but the semiconductor shortage started last year during the Trump administration, putting sanctions on Chinese companies, and in turn the Chinese companies started stockpiling semiconductors.

Effects of COVID to the economy didn't help.

what brand did you buy?

my dealer said he is having a very hard time getting Transits and F150s

I heard Ford was still shipping the vehicles to dealers as they have no room to store them, and when the chips arrive, the dealer is to install them prior to delivery.

What have you guys seen a big change in this year when trying to buy soemthing?

Where to I begin? haha.

try buying appliances, lumber, autos, wire, vacuums, pools equipment and materials, large generators, hot tubs....

our wire went up 60% and expected to increase further. PVC pipe, and vinyl prices have skyrocketed.

we ordered a transfer switch from Generac, normally arrives in less than 2 weeks, now they are telling us 18 weeks....

I'm trying to avoid buying things that are not urgently needed. House A/C is hurting and I will investigate replacement but if need be I can punt as it works just not well.

Talked to my roofers and they said material prices for them were barely changed and they had no "covid-pricing" in their rates. Availability of product is an issue. Especially if a colour comes from the US, they are getting to the point of telling the homeowner to pick a different colour or find a different roofer as so many jobs have been hung up by lack of product.
For the AC, the only two things I've ever had to do to fix mine (2 different houses) were clean the fins and replace the capacitor. In my current house, I had to buy a cheap cap from the only place that was open on a Sunday, and it failed again by the next summer. I replaced that one with one from Sayal and so far so good for the past few years now.

Cap has already been replaced. Coil gets cleaned yearly. I dont have a set of gauges to hook up but I highly suspect low on R22 based on a few symptoms. I may be able to pay someone to check and recharge but it is ~15 years old so I am reluctant to throw much money at it.

PVC watermain pipe is becoming very scarce. Expect all those summer time construction projects involving watermain to be delayed by months at this point.

Once the pipe arrives at site though there are no foam swabs to clean it as there is a shortage of resin to make them and there is also a shortage in chlorine to disinfect the pipe before it can go into service.

Should be a fun year.

Back to cast iron? There shouldnt be a huge demand for cast iron. Although there probably also isnt great production capacity for large diameter pipes.
