LOUD pipes bylaw (Oakville)

I'm sure that someone here knows the phone number to call to have a policeman come round and test your bike.

I wondering. Say someone were to get a motorcycle and they wanted to get it tested, could they drive it to the police station and have them test it? Or have a police officer come to their home to test it?

I mean, it would suck to buy a bike and later find out it was too loud.

Just do the test yourself with the Iphone dB-meter app. Not hard.

It will be a LOT easier for you to find someone with an iphone, than to find a bike to buy that actually fails this test.

My bike is loud and obnoxious (didn't know before i bought it) and it registered 92.5 (i.e. failed by a 0.5) which they explained is not enough to give me a ticket. Lowering the idle was tested there on one bike and it dropped from 96 to 88. I remember them saying something like out of over 70 bikes tested 3 failed and they were all Harleys.

As long as it is capable of being set on "A" scale "slow" response, one dB app should be as good as any other, only diff's will be how easy to use, logging, etc. I can't help with the specific details because I don't have an iphone, I just know people that do ...

I for one would LOVE to see you come up with a device that limits the noise of dumping the air from your brakes to park a truck. As a former truck driver and knowing the mechanics involved it's simply not possible, nor would it be safe to make such a modification.

You're joking, right?

The first thing a lot of truckers do when they get a new truck is to cut off the dump and purge mufflers. They then move on to gutting the exhaust mufflers and routing the Jake brake to free air. "A truck needs to sound like a truck" And of course, "A Harley needs to sound like a Harley"

^ That's why iphone apps aren't certified instruments. How different were they? If more than one or two dB, were they on the same scale and response?

The microphone on an iPhone is nowhere near as sensitive or accurate as a built-for-purpose dB meter, so take the results with a hefty grain of salt.

I'm talking a stock truck. Not a custom hacked up truck. First if you muffle the dump and purge to the point where it's no louder than a car you're going to do one very important thing. The air will be slowed down to the point of where it will take several seconds to clear your brakes of any air. Keep in mind air-brakes work on the principal that the air is used to keep them OFF so that if the system fails, they'll default to stopping the vehicle. The purge valve going that slow won't clear the water in the system causing the system to backlog with water, reduce it's air capacity thus causing more wear on the compressor and overall leading to a higher likelyhood of system failure. The guys who are cutting the Dump and purge mufflers off are being obnoxious with the dump and the same with the purge just with the added benefit of having less items holding up the water. As for the exhaust and jake brake... I'm as against those modifications as I am obnoxious pipes. For the exact same reason. It's unnecessary and is only done to make more noise. Especially when your in a 500hp truck.

I have no problem with this by-law if it gets rid of Harley turds with open drag pipes and racer boys using gutted out Growlers. Both are obnoxiously loud and do not belong on public streets.

That's what most people said when the U.S. government passed homeland security laws, it was for terrrorists and now they are listening in on u.s. citizens, there's no law that's not abused by our retarded politicians, I will be against this even though I'm not a "harley turd" or a "super sporter growler", this law will be used against me I'm sure of it.

There's a leap and a half.

You realize this bylaw was passed to appease a few local NIMBYs, right? And the odds of it being enforced, or "used against you" are slim to none, especially given the fact that the vast majority (read: almost all) bikes passed without any issue at the first public test. HRPS can't organize a public event which proves you have nothing to worry about, only to start pulling the same bikes over on the suspicion of being too loud.

Just an FYI for everyone else on the boards, a properly installed and unmodded Jake brake isn't what you're hearing on the highways.

And I've yet to have seen either a dump or a purge muffler
