Looking to replace my Genesis with something new...

I guess it's finally time to retire the gensis:

And get a PS3 or an X-Box 360.

Wait....cars? wut?

depending on the years, but for most part they are mechanically the same. The Vibe was offered with a bigger engine and AWD but apparently it sucks...

The Vibe didn't suck, and if you enjoy the Matrix you won't find anything structurally or mechanically different. Oddly enough, the Vibe had better resale value than the Matrix due to some features and content being standard on the Pontiac, that weren't available or only at a higher trim level (ie- auto headlights).

I've heard the Cruze has a recall recently. Fire from the wiring. Go figure.

The Recall on the Cruze was not due to fires from the wiring, it was due to people not cleaning up the oil from an oil change that would sit on the aerodynamic skid plate that runs from the front of the bumper to the midway point under the engine. If not drained properly (ie- people rushing a job in their driveway), oil could sit there and there was a heightened "risk" of fire. Saying that there were wiring issues causing it is a little disingenuous to what is a very decent car for what it is.

Now as to the OP's question, what are your price ranges that you're looking at?

I presume that's your car? No that's fine, I'm not a big fan of the Rio.

So here's another question for you guys...what're your thoughts on previous daily rentals? Obviously their pricing is considerably less than brand new...but mentally it's a tough decision as daily rentals have the stigma of being beat to hell (not like in the Jackass movie but close!)

My wifes last car (2005 focus) was a rental in a previous life. ~20,000 km of rental duty, then t-boned (lightly), then we bought it. Just got rid of it after 200,000 more km's and it still worked well. No major repairs, just brakes and wheel bearings. I am not sure rentals are always the best idea, but sometimes you can get a discount big enough to take the risk. We got more than 10K off the price of a new one for the 1 year old focus so it was worth it for us to try.

GG - one of the cars that was offered to me last night was a previous rental with about 30k on it...I didn't go for it simply because I was uncomfortable with the daily rental stigma...and thinking for the future I can imagine it being harder to sell. But basically it was me being uncomfortable with it.

I checked out the new Focus Hatch last night....VERY VERY nice car and I spent 2.5hrs at the dealer only to walk away from the deal. I went up a few times from my budget and they went down a little bit. In the end we ended up walking away for about $10/bi-weekly. I even offered to split the difference but they said no, so I walked away.

As for budget...if new I'm considering the new Focus only as that's got my eye and I really like it in comparison to everything else. So around $20k ALL IN with trade (which has some loan still on it). I'm really considering just buying something under $15k all in or less and then driving it into the ground as I save a boat load of cash for a bigger bike in the future...I love cars but unfortunately they are never going to hold their value no matter what we think/hope/pray lol.

I'm narrowing it down to the used cars as follows:

- Matrix
- Vibe
- Mazda 3
- Impreza
- will go and drive the Calibre today/tomorrow

I want a hatch/wagon so that I can throw some stuff in without worrying and it will be fairly good on mileage. I considered some small SUVs but I'm not convinced simply due to gas mileage.

Thank you all for the suggestions, I appreciate it.

As will ALLLLLL other threads.

Suggesting the Subaru Impreza
Newer model great on gas,
Amazing cargo space
Winter = a lot safer
amazing safety ratings.
Confidence while driving
And the suby community is tight (subies come with friends lol)

Newer model is not as fun as the older model though. Theyre going more mainstream with the Imprezas

Basically best decently priced for AWD in its category :)
I suggest getting a test drive

Otherwise have you considered German? (golf?!)

Subaru Impreza FTW!
Fully agree

if you're still considering small SUV's, check out the Ford Escape (not the redesigned 2013) but the previous gen 2008-2012. they get the same gas mileage as the matrix (give or take 1L/100km). something to consider.

I know how you feel about the Focus. Rented one to go to montreal (twice) first time around i got the Titanium version with all the bells and whistles...
Impressive but the driveability kinda turned me off... that and the center console lock/unlock from ford. Other than that, made me fall in LOVE with the car (tan leather heated seats in white car will do that to me)
Then i had the base model (i think) and without bells and whistles i wasnt as impressed... but it works. Not the same experience as the titanium model

In the end, what would you say is your priority in your car?
I know you ahve a bunch of requirements but that could help narrow it down even more?

-Cheaper Price?
-Cargo space?
-Fuel economy?
-Driveability/pleasure driving?
-Winter safety?
etc etc

CSX all day.
Not in his price range for a new car... (i think he's looking for brand new)
and they dont even make the CSX anymore its the ILX thats starts at 27k
pricey for a glorified civic ;p

I checked out the new Focus Hatch last night....

I've got one "X" plan PIN leftover. If 2012 models are still covered by our plan (CAW/Ford), you can have it, as I won't need one for a few months, and I get 4 more when they switch to the 2013's.
(if you bashed Unions in prior posts, you need not apply)
You get the car for my price. Only haggling you have to do is with a trade in's value, if you have one.

PM me if you're interested, and be certain you are not a Union basher / hater.

Notice how I posted the GEN 1 version, not the smaller one they released after?.....cause that's the one I owned as a kid. Senior crew checking in. *high five*

Damn, I feel old now. Don't forget the Sega CD add on

Mazda bodywork is complete garbage. Just look at older 3s and Protege5... rusty s***boxes

Youre right about the different trim levels making all the difference...the SEL is the minimum I'd go.
As for my priorities on the updated car are as follows:
- reduced payment
- cargo space
- fuel economy

The rest just kind of follow through after that.

As for new vs used, the focus is the only car I'm looking at new as I've driven all the others on my list and have not been as impressed as this car.

From the used list my top car is the Mateix and Vibe. I'm pretty set on a hatch as I love the usability of the space.

As for the Genesis...I used to love that system! My buddy has the NES and it's wicked fun in comparison to today's games with the awesome graphics.

Hey guys,

I recently posted my Genesis Coupe 3.8 for sale as it's time to unfortunately grow up and get something a bit more practical...Genesis and Bike...neither are overly practical lol but I decided that the bike stays...so something's got to go...

Anyway just looking for suggestions for a small car that's cheap on gas, plenty of space, and reliable to use as my daily/winter drive as the bike's my commute/go-to for most things unless I need to carry gf and cargo...

So far...

Hyundai Elantra GT - nice car...wasn't overly inspiring but nice car overall
Ford Focus - Very nice 2012 models but a lil pricey so looking at a hatch as a demo where i can save a few $k
Chev Cruz - drove the car last night...sweet Jeebus this car has absolutely no nuts whatsoever...the Turbo's a little bit better but it's the slowest of the bunch
Kia Forte 5 - like it...but not very fun

Any suggestions/thoughts are highly appreciated and if you have any other cars you'd recommend I look at I'd appreciate that as well:

Also considering:
- Matrix
- Vibe
- older Focus

Mitsubishi, best warranty i guess. My brother has a Mitsubishi Gallant (almost 7 years old) and it is flawless. Very good on gas and very reliable.
