Still riding and will ride again in a few hours.

Nice stones!

so i rode yesterday.....and whats seemed like a little romp at 401/404 turned into a scary slushfest down by the lake.

ok...duh...i should have known but while the debate about salt, or cold....or whatever raged on, i almost got wiped out coming up leslie from eglinton by a FREAKING FAMILY OF RACCOONS!!!! WTF
I SWEAR THEY WERE THE SIZE OF PONIES.

I personally don't get the people who ride in 4 degrees, with the road wet and possibility of ice. Salt all over the place. Zero traction, and freezing your balls off. Where is the fun in that? Forget the fun, common sense anyone? Or is it just so that you can feel superior to others by claiming you are "hardcore"? lol

For some people it's an option you failed to list. Transportation to work or school.. and they don't own a car or don't have a G license. So they prefer the bike to the TTC. In some cases people work or go to school too far to reasonably get there via TTC on time. Especially people who work early hours. So they almost have to ride..

I've been in that situation, and no, it's not fun riding in cold weather or in the dark when it's cold and raining, and yeah it's somewhat dangerous depending on your riding skills etc, but if you were in a situation where you had no car, and the ride to work/school via bike takes 20 minutes, versus 90 minutes (or more) on a TTC bus or subway, filled with loud obnoxious teenagers on their way to school in the mornings... would you rather ride and face a bit of discomfort and chills, or sit on a crowded bus going through all that frustration, on top of having to wake up 2 hours earlier each day to get your commute started?

If you own a motorcycle and need to get to school/work in the winter and thats your only mode of transportation then you are a dummy lol
First get a car to get to work /school, after that get a bike. A car is a necessity in this situation, a bike is recreational. But then whats to really expect from a society that buys the latest iphones, giant tvs, goes on vacations etc... and only keeps digging deeper and deeper into debt. :D

You missed my point entirely... For you bikes are obviously just recreational toys. But for some people they are their main/only vehicle for a reason.. even if it's just on a temporary basis.

Some people don't have a *G2* so they can't drive a car. You can get your M2 and be driving a motorcycle on the streets/highway within 2 months of doing your written test. But for a car, you must write the G1, but then wait a full year before taking your G2 and being allowed to drive a car on the roads alone.

I was in that boat when i moved out west to BC and lived there on and off for 12 years. I didn't switch my license over when i moved out there because i was travelling a lot for my job, i was a roadie for a rock band who were almost constantly on tour, and when i wasn't with them i was with someone else, so i was rarely in the same city more than a month out of the year. So i let my Ontario license expire and i never bothered to renew it. But then i moved back to Ontario a few years ago and found out that if you wait more than 10 years to renew your G license in Ontario you must start all over from scratch and go through the full Graduated licensing BS, no matter how long you drove before, or what age you are. It's incredibly stupid but it's our law. They should let you just take a one day road test to renew it, but they don't.

That is the reason i bought a bike when i moved back here, just because i could get that license in 2 months and get mobile again while i waited out the period to get my G2. So having only my M2 here and not being allowed to drive a car alone under the stupid G1 terms, i HAD to use my bike to get anywhere.. I only recently got my G back finally after the long drawn out ridiculous 2 year process, so now of course i won't ride the bike on bad weather days. But when i had no other option, the bike was the only way to go.

Then there are lots of new/young riders who do the same thing and get their M2 before they have a G2 just because it's a much quicker process. Cars break down, sometimes people can't afford to get them fixed or buy a new one etc.. there are many other reasons why someone might have to use their bike vs. having a car. Not everyone has resources or many options when it comes to getting a car.. some people have money or people to help out, but many don't. An old cheap bike is cheaper to buy/operate than a car still any day. And i suspect they are the people you see out riding in the bad conditions. It's not just to look cool or tough. It's necessity.

I have 2 cars and 2 bikes, and I still ride my fav bike to commute everyday because I LOOOVE it.

After the snow starts accumulating and not melting away, I revert to the TTC for downtown commuting through the winter (only a couple to few weeks these recent years).

In the summer I relish sticky tires and sweaty leathers, in the winter I appreciate the freedom of movement downtown, and free parking. The motorbike in general comes with certain advantages and disadvantages. Your lifestyle will dictate which are which to you.

If a bike is pure recreation, perhaps cost for a Sunday toy is a disadvantage. But if you commute regularly maybe even a Panigale is one hell of a deal! ;)

I only have a bike, during winter I use TTC... :( I'm a student, I can't afford to pay for 4k insurance along with parking downtown on a daily basis. A bike gives you more freedom, without the high cost of a car.

Oh man, yesterday I almost got taken out by an opossum. I'm pretty it's tail got ripped off in the brief encounter we had.

We have 3 motorcycles, a truck and a car in our driveway and for reasons beyond my control I ended up with only motorcycles to choose from yesterday.
It's a 25 minute walk to the bus or a 45 minute walk to work or 5 minutes by motorcycle. Temp was plus 7, there was a fine mist of rain. What would you choose? :)

Sometimes circumstances will get you on a bike even in cold weather, even if you do own 2 cars. It was a beautiful ride I can't complain.
